It's obviously a poorly photoshopped version of this.

It looks like a photoshop to me too. Searching on google I came across a Christopher Nolan fan forum which is tracking the movie. They had some shots of Michael Shannon but none clearily in his uniform- one seems to show him in a motion capture suit too.

The first one has him wearing what kind of looks like a costume, but he's wrapped up in an overcoat.

Another from behind

Mocap

My guess is that image is probably someone's interpretation of what the final suit will look like, based on what seems to be that black get up that Shannon has on the set.

Announcements / Re: Judge Dredd joins World Book Night

It's always good when we get a comic accepted as being on the level of other books. Even better if it's Judge Dredd! I personally would have thought America'd be a better choice for reading, but I like the Dark Judges too.

Unfortunately Dark Judges is only on the UK and Ireland list. Those of us in the US have different books to give out to people:

Truth be told it's the first time I've heard of world book night. Maybe I'll try and participate in this one, always had a soft spot for Farenheit 451 and Mark Twain of those on the US list.

General / Re: Dredd Reckoning blog by Douglas Wolk

I would like to say I've greatly enjoyed this blog. I was also looking at it before I joined these forums when my interest in Dredd was starting, and it was one of my main sources in determining what would be the best for a newcomer. Helpful all the more since it's from someone living in the states.

The entries are in depth (very useful when I was determining which case files were worth a go), and I like the different views brought by the guests. Kudos to Douglas.

This is true, and thanks for posting those hilarious examples. I checked out the Fox News website for the first time today just for the helluvit. Turns out it was the Liberal Media's fault for concentrating on all those irrelevant gaffes. Oh and the Jews. Who are liberal, but love Israel so they voted for the Israel-hating.. .. erm ... waitaminute..

Yeah, it's quite amusing really. I'm not sure where this Australia thing took off from but that image above from CrazyFoxMachine pretty much sums it up. I remember something similar about people threatening to move to Germany along similar lines. It's really batshit crazy, and being in Texas it's pretty much a normal occurrence here.

Speaking of which, I wonder what I'll do in 2014 for Texas's statewide elections. Maybe I'll do some write-ins for Dave the Orangutan?

Speaking on the US elections for the moment, I must say that I wasn't in favor of either. My views are more to the left and both candidates were essentially moderates in the US sphere in the long run. Support the rich and continue the same foreign policy. Romney's campaign is believed to  have raised something like  $800 million total, Obama in the $9900 million. The Citizens United case really opened up the floodgates for corporate funding via Super PACs.

I ended up voting for the Green Party candidate Jill Stein, since her views were the closest to mine of those that had ballot access in Texas, and I figured it was the best use of a protest vote against the two party system compared to the other third parties.

Always bothered me how the pundits here claim Obama was a socialist (ie 'european-style' welfare state as Americans see it) or even a full blown Marxist because of his tax polices. I don't think he would even pass for a social democrat in Europe. Or the other stuff about him being a closeted Muslim with an agenda to intentionally weaken to US.

One thing amusing on this side of the ocean is what happens after the results are announced. Angry liberals are funny, but I say conservatives are a riot. Onwards!

and a big wtf on this

QuoteRUSH: A note that I got from a good friend of mine — this is a fascinating little think piece. He lives in Kansas City. He's fed up with all the ads on TV. He's just fed up with it. His Romney sign was defaced. Cow manure was thrown all over it and underneath it on his yard. He says, "You know, I'm getting real tired of all the ads. I can't wait 'til tomorrow, and I hope your prediction is right. But here's my idea: Let's just flip a coin.

"If the Republicans win, they get to select the half of the country they want and the Democrats get the other half. You split this country right down the middle. Republicans pick the side they want; the Democrats get the other side. We have Mitt; they have Obama. You can live wherever you want to live. You choose which side you want to live in." He said, "The question is: How long would it be before Democrats are building tunnels to get underneath the wall keeping them out of the Republican side?"

Stop and think. This is a great illustration. You split the country right in half, right down the Mississippi River, and let's just say the Republicans get the left half the country and they build a wall. The Mississippi River is not a moat. You build a wall there. The Democrats get everything on the East and we get everything on the West. Or flip it. It doesn't matter. We get our ways of life on our side; they get their ways of life on theirs.

How long will it be before all those Democrats are trying to get over to our side?

How long? We'd have to have checkpoints! We'd have to shoot 'em on sight if they're trying to get into our side of the country, just like in the old East and West Germany days. Stop and think of that. It would make a great book: Talking about one side and comparing the two. It would be a great movie showing where certain companies chose to live, where certain people chose to live. It'd show how they chose to run their businesses, how they chose to manage their affairs.

I guess all forums and communities will have their trolls and e-drama- truth be told . I can understand though the need to keep trolls, especially persistent ones out, but maybe loosen the standards a bit? Or at least give some opportunities for newcomers to post more to show that they aren't here to stir the pot.

I guess there will be plenty of time afterwards to discuss what went wrong with the movie, whether the marketing brought it down or the reputation of the Stallone flick turned it away (as some may have thought the movie was related to that). Hopefully with DVD sales it might at least close even, but I'm being optimistic.

I just don't know how the resident evil movie was able to get past it here in the United States.

digital app wise - any thoughts on selling single stories within 2000ad (ie. like singles on albums?)  or whole story arcs that won't be 'traded' ?

thanks

I was going to ask the same question regarding digital distribution so I would like to second this. Some of the case files would be excellent for digital distribution imo, as are some of the other story arcs like the Pit, America (I believe this one has a kindle version only), Tour of Duty, Origins, etc. and would make them a lot more accessible to audiences in the United States like myself if they were available for purchase through the app.

Also, what are your thoughts on the performance of Dredd in theaters? What's the future of Dredd on the big screen?

I liked the way Smith's art looked, at least from the case files I have. I was surprised too seeing that there's not much on him in the bios in the back considering how common he was in the earlier progs. I wonder if there was some falling out between Smith and others, or if it's just a case he isn't as marketable as other artists?

Thanks for the welcome guys. I think the internet has helped for Dredd and co. to spread better, and maybe overcome the stigma the name is tied to because of the Stallone movie.

Figure I might as well write it all out- I've been aware of Judge Dredd since I was young, but for all the wrong reasons.

Being in the United States, comic book figures I was familiar with were characters from DC and Marvel properties. My first encounter with Judge Dredd was from the SNES/Genesis tie in to the Stallone movie, though I was too young to be aware of a movie (much less watch it). I received the game as kind of a lazy gift from a relative who probably picked it up from a bargain bin, and didn't think much of it then. Played through it a few times but never finished it. It got me interested in the world though it remained in the back of my mind.

Wasn't until I was older and pieced together what the game was based off because of the bad reputation of the movie- but this was further messed up since I thought the game was just based off the Stallone movie, and not that the movie not based on anything in particular. Yeah, I wasn't too bright, this was before I had a computer to look these things up.

My interest in Dredd didn't really pick up again until I got towards the end of high school, I began to really look around the internet for some sci-fi themed works, since I thought Judge Dredd was just a glorification of the police. Of course I found this not to be the case that there was a lot of messages in Judge Dredd critical of that, as well as its own humor. Not only did I learn Dredd had a long history as a comic character, he was but one of many features in 2000AD.

A year back, feeling that Judge Dredd had some good potential for my bookshelf. I ended up looking at this forum for some recommendations as to where to start reading. Unfortunately I didn't have much luck finding them in comic stores here in my part of Texas (just a second part of "The Day the Law Died" for some reason), and the prices on the internet were too rich for my blood. So I left it again, but kept the recommendations on hand for later when I finished my courses at university.

It wasn't until a few months back in May I ended up finding some of the case volumes in both comic stores and even some book stores (which seemed to have been printed for American markets in mind since they only had US and Canadian dollar amounts on it), which I guess was due to some of the increased interest from the pending release of the movie. I was able to grab Case Files 2 and 5 from this store and liked what I read- Cursed Earth, The Day the Law Died, Block Mania, and Apocalypse War. I managed to pick up Case Files 14 later on the internet on the cheap, so I got necropolis down too. From there I read up on some of the other arcs to plug in the gaps.

I coincidentally ended up seeing the new movie with some friends, though interestingly it was my friend who wanted to see it more (he had heard good things about it). I liked it, but it's kind of odd being with people who couldn't pick up on some of the small references- like the chopper graffiti for example that I spotted as they were going up in the elevator. I'm disappointed the movie didn't do too well here, as it means it will be difficult still to get Dredd stuff outside the internet here. I've tried to get some of my other friends to see the movie (Three liked it, one didn't, and another didn't bother to see it, saw Taken 2 instead!) and even lend them some of my collections, but I've got none to bite yet unfortunately to go beyond the movie.

I'm looking into expanding my collection of Judge Dredd, Tour of Duty looks interesting to me as does Origins. I've heard good things about Day of Chaos from this forum and some blogs, so hopefully it'll get collected soon in a tpb. I guess I could get some of the issues through the app too though, but I'd rather have them all in one go. I've also been trying to find a good copy of America since that gets recommended a lot, but the prices are ridiculous many times- would love to see all of these as digital purchases one day!

Thankfully, while I can't get progs easily in print, the digital subscriptions have been a godsend and I'm looking into getting it. I have an ipad (yeah yeah, I know), and I downloaded the 2000AD newsstand app just a few hours ago and will get around to looking at some of the progs. Kind of weird since I'm 22 going on to 23 in a few days (with comics seen as a teenage thing at best), but I've always gotten the vibe that the comic crowd for 2000AD is more mature. I hope that I can acquire some of the case files one day through a digital download here- much more convenient for me to have them all in one place. Hope to also go beyond Judge Dredd too- Strontium Dog looks pretty interesting from what I've read up on it.

Sorry for droning on, but I look forward to posting here more.
