News / Re: New 2000AD Covers Blog

Some absolutely awesome stuff on here Pete...
I don't know how I've managed to miss this thread for so long !!... :o
Thanks for all your hard work...It is much appreciated...I've just spent about an hour tonight looking through you blog site and keep getting 'side tracked'  there is so much in it !!

Just followed the D'Israeli blog and the work / time he spends doing his artwork is incredible....I was under the assumption that 'digital' art was so much quicker but it certainly doesn't seem to be the case here ??!!....

Also saw from an earlier post that a Clint Langley cover amongst many others,  was what inspired you to start this thread / Covers blog.......So here's hoping you can use my Clint Langley cover of Slaine, from Prog 958 on 22nd September 1995 ' Cold Warrior ' in one of your 'covers' section....
I've taken it out its frame and updated the photo on my CAF site, so if you can use it,  great !!

Cheers..

Yes, SimeonB, I'd go along with Highly Recommending From Hell by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell...

It's both educational, a very 'long' read ( it took me several days to get through it...there is so much in it ), a fascinating 'insight' into London at that time,  and chock full of afternotes about where his research / ideas are drawn from......An actual real 'grown up' Graphic Novel and top of my list on recommendations....

Others I would highly recommend ( and in no particular order ), and quite a 'varied' selection of style and content are...

Concrete by Paul Chadwick..
Locke and Key by Joe Hill...
The Boys by Garth Ennis..
Watchmen by Alan Moore..
V for Vendetta by Alan Moore and David Lloyd.
Slaine : The Horned God by Pat Mills & Simon Bisley..
Fatale by Sean Phillips and Ed Brubaker..
The Crow by James O'Barr..
Grandville by Bryan Talbot...
Alice in Sunderland by Brian Talbot..
Blacksaad by Juan Dias Canales...

There are loads more, but these Graphic Novels are always worth an occasional 're-read'...and for me that's the sign of a great Graphic Novel, when you can quite happily read it several times and still enjoy it...

That's a great piece, and a nice story behind it, Bob.  Fantastic to see talent like this around here...

Thanks guys....
Yes, I'm delighted with it...... There is not a lot of Mongrol artwork around it seems....Over on the CAF site there are only about 7 pieces in total..... :'(
When I first saw it in the March Art competition, I immediately thought ( like several of the other entries that I've seen since ) that it wouldn't look 'out of place' in the 'Prog' itself...
There is so much artistic talent on this forum it's unbelievable...!! :o

Well, I think it's absolutely fabulous in Black and White, BUT and apologies to all you B/W 'purists' out there, I think the coloured version is just so much MORE.....Incredible......
Thanks for posting, Ming...

Posted this on the 'wrong' thread earlier, so now posting it here so everyone can get a look at my great new addition to my collection.....Mongrol 'On the Run'....

Marchs' art competition winner...Mongrol by Bob Molesworth....
I saw this, ( the winning entry in a fabulous months' entries )  and got in touch with Bob to try and buy it, not realising it was a digital piece .......After some discussion,  Bob said he would do a hand painted commissioned piece,  based on his line drawing from the competition, and it arrived today...

It's absolutely fabulous, I'm delighted,  and I've been trying to get a Mongrol piece for ages...
I've included a link to my Comicartfans gallery where you can see it in more detail and also see the various stages it went through....

Thanks very much to Bob......Enjoy.......Now just have to get it framed !! ...

Just thought I'd share this with you all....My recently arrived Mongrol commission from the amazing Bob Molesworth..

Marchs' Art competition here, produced a fantastic version of Mongrol by Bob Molesworth......a very worthy winner in what was a tremendous month, with some really great entries.......
I really liked this,  so got in touch with Bob ( via this forum ) to see if I could buy it, not realising it was 'digital'......After some discussion, Bob agreed to do me a hand painted commissioned piece based on the original line drawing he used for his competition entry....

And this is the result !!! ......
I'm absolutely delighted with this, as I'd been searching for a while for a Mongrol piece of artwork but they are very hard to find....What a really great guy to deal with and a phenomenal artist to boot !!!

I've included a link,  I hope,  to my comicartfans site where you can see the various stages it went through before becoming the completed piece....and showing a bit more detail.....as I've not quite got the hang of posting decent sized images here yet...

Locke & Key by Joe Hill & Gabriel Rodriguez.  It's my favorite finite series.

I definitely recommend Locke and Key by Joe Hill as well .....I was recommended this by two other members here....Albion and Link Prime both recommended it highly......so much so, I went out and bought Volume 1....After reading this I immediately bought Volume 2, 3 and 4......Volume 5 is out in July in TPB form.  There may be 1 more after that and the series is complete.....
Don't miss it as it's well worth a read....

Another recommendation,  from Judge Jack , was Concrete by Paul Chadwick.....Not your usual type of tale if you're on the 'look out' for loads of violence and action....BUT a wonderful, thought provoking and entertaining tale that asks 'Is a 7 foot tall man,  made of concrete,  more 'human' than us....? ...And Paul Chadwicks' artwork is very,  very good.....A fairly 'sparse' style that somehow manages to convey an emotional depth that is astonishing...
Highly recommended but not your 'usual' fare...

Just found this thread and saw that Steve Green had mentioned The Borg in a previous post ....I caught up with this guy at Thoughtbubble in Leeds and he happily posed for a photo in his fabulous costume....
Also included one of me getting twatted by Judges....and also The Red Skull...A full face latex mask that was incredibly realistic...
Great stuff....loads to see and some amazing artists and costumes...

I'm really loving this thread....It's showing me lots of stuff I hadn't noticed, or paid much / any attention to before !!.....
Thanks very much Ming for starting it...

The thing is,  I'm not an artist or a letterer,  just an avid reader, and I've never really paid all that much attention to the lettering.......I suppose I just saw it as a means of progressing the story / telling the story and really just 'supplementing' the artwork.........I know, I'm sorry, this smacks of 'heresy' for all you letterers out there......However I've grown a fair bit now in my knowledge, thanks in part to numerous posts on this forum, and what I will say to all you 'unsung' letterers out there is...

While I think a lot of people don't pay all that much attention to the lettering 'as such' , the truth is when the lettering is poor, ( I now realise )  it somehow destroys the whole 'reading / viewing experience' as it no longer seems to form a cohesive unit and feels dis-jointed or dis-connected between the words and the pictures...
Oh, but when it's good,  it not only leads the viewer brilliantly through the story,  it actually enhances the whole experience enormously.....I didn't even realise this until I saw the 'Twilight' lettering in the post above, and to be honest even if I was inclined to read Twilight ( which I'm not ),  the lettering there is so bad that I doubt if I could be bothered reading it at all.....It's dreadful....

So a huge thanks to all you letterers out there....you actually 'enhance' the whole reading / viewing experience.....and somehow make it a seamless transition between the written and the drawn.....Something that I will now be paying more attention to in the future...You are, the mostly, unsung heroes in this medium....

Many thanks from someone now slightly better informed about the very necessary role you guys play,  in what is my favourite medium...
Cheers..

I'd think that you will really like them, IndigoPrime....
I thought they were excellent...BUT,  I started with them in Graphic Novel form so I'm sticking with that format....
I've got the 1st 4 volumes in Paperback and the 5th Volume is due out in July.....I think there is 6 in the series and that's it.....
Anyway...Enjoy .. :D

True story ( but I wish it wasn't ) ....Heard one day at my work....

A guy who stammered was asked...." Do you stammer all the time, or is it just when you speak " ?? !!!.....

I mean, seriously WTF !!.... :o
