Quote from: Leigh S on 27 January, 2023, 06:56:46 PMThey really could have dropped last two stories  - Willy Blanko and Shickelgruber - as they are froma  different "era" of Stront.  Instead, pad it a little with "Assault on Trigol 3"

Hmm. I'd argue with that - Galaxy Killers is nobody's favourite story, and I personally don't like Journey into Hell much, either. They're both atypical Stront stories that go on a bit too long for their own good. Shicklegruber Grab gives the volume a punchy, action-packed ending that's sorely needed.

Galaxy Killers was partly responsible for me stopping reading 2000AD and Starlord for 6 months- as a disgruntled Starlord reader I did take to it and the different take on Strontium Dog (and Ro-Busters) were the reason.

Prog / Re: Prog 2317: Escape Route

A bit sad for me- this is my last physical Prog* before I go digital, but it is adorned with the best cover in years.

Dredd was good, but all I could thinks was "Skip Tracer art". Which I know is mightily unfair on Paul Marsh.

The Out was great and I agree the art seems to have gone up a notch. From superb to even more superb.

As forPinapples, I actually enjoyed it this week.

And that was the most understandable episode of The Order in years.

I've been doing a lof of reading of Nikolai Dante recently, catching up on Simon Fraser's podcast, and as a result have been exposed to a lot of John Burns art. And I am sorry to say, this week's on The Order is no where near his best. It seems a bit rushed and I prefer the fully painted stuff, as opposed to the painted over line work. (And I had never actually consciously noticed the difference until Simon Fraser mentioned it on the podcast).

I do love Proteus Vex, but am finding each episode needs to be read twice to understand it. It seems like they always start off a bit jarring and then explain what's going on.

* apart from the Regened ones which I have promised my son I will buy physical copies of.

It just seems harder to see what all the topics are at a glance and which have been updated.

Early days I guess, but I much prefer the old look.

Took me 5 mins to find the login screen- it's really not obvious at all on an iPad.

Agree with Alex on Insurrection - I loved the first two books. They are a real high point and I'm sad the third book didn't use that style. But it's kinda a forerunner of the current style but in black and white.

Also agree with Jware on the fully painted stuff - some of the figures look a bit stiff, but yeah I really like It overall.

But I understand why he doesn't do the fully painted anymore - it just takes too long.

So when I look at the new stuff I'm both sad and happy at the same time. Sad it's not painted but happy to have MacNeil in the Prog / Meg at all.

Didn't think this was out until next week?

I am assuming the style he has adopted for Joe Pineapples is so that it is in keeping with the first two Bisley episodes. If he had used the photo style it would have been really jarring - unless he had done all the episodes. But this was always meant to be abled to be positioned as new Bisley art in the Prog.

Other Reviews / Re: I bought Halo Jones (again)
18 January, 2023, 03:11:30 PM
I have recounted and reckon the most copies I have of stuff is 4. I also have a bunch of things 3 times.

I never really set out to buy things multiple times, it's just ended up that way by accident.

For what it is worth what I have 4 times is selected episodes of The Cursed Earth.

I originally bought the Titan edition as I wasn't buying the Prog at the time it was published.
Then I bought the Hachette as the pages have come loose in the Titan edition, so that was a replacement for that.

Then I bought the Uncensored version to get the missing episodes and colour centres spreads.

And I have bought the odd back Prog, more to fill in my collection, than to specifically get the Cursed Earth.

Things I have three times are where I have the original Progs, then bought a physical collected edition, which I think is valid, and then got a digital version as part of a Humble Bundle. And so hadn't really intended to.

Apart from Nikolai Dante, where I decided I need collections of the whole lot and bought them when there was an offer on digital, including buying two I already had physically, to make sure they were all in one place.

So taking the bait.....two questions

What versions do you have?

And why do you need 5 different ones?

(The most I have bought something is three times).

Prog / Re: Prog 2314: Out of the past

I keep meaning to finish off my ABC Warriors re-read. I got as far as the Volgan War part two - about 5 years ago - and stopped. I'll get there eventually, but it's just not been a priority. I always find myself going back to series one.  Nothing since comes close to that level of excitement

Hope.... Some of the repeated headshots and images in this story have drawn me out of it a bit - people with exactly the same facial expression and lighting in multiple different scenes and such like. I like Broxton's work a lot though, would be interested in his thoughts behind this.

Brett Ewins used to do that all the time on Bad Company; I don't known why he did it, but I've not read any negative comments about it.

I'm still of the view that ultimately everything will go down the same road as Halo Jones and end up being coloured in.  That won't make the B&W versions disappear, but I think it's increasingly likely if Rebellion want to continue to sell reprints to new audiences, and to find ways of re-selling them to those of us who have already bought them.

I'm fine with that. After all Rebellion is a business and anything that generate more income for them has only got to be a good thing in terms of their long term prosperity and ultimately their ability to keep printing the Prog.

If colour is the only way to attract a new audience, then why not? Especially if the coloured version already exists.

For the the die hardship, as you say the black and white still exists, so everyone should be happy surely?

For what it's worth I've got the coloured version of Halo Jones, but only because it was included in a Humble Bundle. I don't think I would have bought it otherwise. And I've not read it, mainly because I had only recently read the Hachette black and white one, and wasn't going to read it again so soon.

Think I have only once received a Friday Prog before.

Not counting those that came the week after.😂

One thing that has happen before is the discount didn't show up in my account. I then raised a ticket via the "contact us" part of the webshop and Rebellion storted it out. They are usually pretty good at doing that.

No you don't get it emailed to you. It appears in your 2000AD web shop account. It then gets applied when you make a purchase on the web shop.

If you only want to make a small purchase and save it for a more expensive stuff that is being released later in the year, you have to remove it from your basket. You can only use it once in the year, so I save mine for when I'm buying a load of stuff.
