Film & TV / Re: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

I liked it. It was pretty funny in places. It didn't take itself seriously at all ( which actually became a bit of a problem ). Overall style over substance really, but as my brother put it a "feel good movie".

I've posted it before (and got pelters ) and I'll repeat it here:

Brazil is my least favourite film. Of all time.

Please don't make Judge Dredd Mega City One like it. In anyway. Whatsoever.

For me the most important thing is to get the tone right. The comic does everything from black comedy, to police procedural, to war, to political thriller, to horror.

It works in the comic so I guess it can work on the box, but I guess It is going to require a lot of skill to incorporate all of that and make it consistent.

If Karl Urban can commit to appearing in most episodes then great, but if not I would rather they went for some one else. But hey, bigger movie stars than him have done long runs in TV shows. Martin Sheen and Kevin Spacey come most readily to mind ( and Kiefer Sutherland).

How about going for the original look from the very early Progs, for the eagle and shoulder pad? I.e. when they were much smaller than today. Would still be authentic to the comic and more practical than how it is now depicted.

Quite a lot like the 2012 costume, you mean? All they really did was turn the eagle into a motif, added some (OK, a lot) of armour, and took away the badge chain which, even if easily detachable (which it's never been shown to be), is a bit of a daft thing to have in hand-to-hand combat.

Er...yeah...you could put it that way...just make the eagle stand out a bit more and you're there.

I'm not usually a fan of Deadworld but the strip this week was phenomenal.

Re: Brink, I'm a bit confused about what's happening here.
When did Junot Snr go missing?
What was in the last Brink run?
Re
when did Junot Snr go missing
- it is mentioned in the dialogue in the first episode of the current series.

They said no network is on board yet.

Personally I'm hoping for Netflix.

Hope it's not Sky, as I don't have that and satellite dishes are frowned on where I live. But hey, Sky should be available via the Internet by the time this is out.

I heard there's an Internet streaming thingy called Now TV or something that allows you to watch Sky stuff for a monthly fee without entering into a contract. That's how I'm planning to watch the forthcoming Twin Peaks episodes.

Yes but neither my set top box or telly support it.  :(

Sky did announce proper Sky via tinternet for two years hence a couple of months ago.

Ok read it.

Best thing was the Blackblood tale. Really funny, even though it's a joke we have already had on ABC Warriors. The art looks just like Bisley's on the Black Hole.

Dredd confirms what those reading Lawless already know - Phil Winslade is an art droid of the very highest quality. Looks great coloured too ( even though he said he took the Lawless job because it was in black and white).

Anderson is a bit throw away and seems to be an
excuse to get Judge Death to feature - again
.

The rest is fairly recent reprint apart from a one page Tharg story.

Overall I like it.

Just picked up my 2000AD and it's an American size. Is that normal or does it depend where you get it?

Last year's was"normal" 2000AD size.

Not a problem- very happy to have- just wondering.

So if there's 80 more 2000ad books how would you guess they'd be split up?
I'm guessing...
Dredd 10
Strontium Dog 6
Rogue Trooper 5
Slaine 5
Nemesis 4
ABC Warriors 3
Nikolai Dante 4
RoboHunter 2
Durham Red 2
Bad Company 2
Judge Anderson 2
Halo Jones 1
Shakara 2
Lawless 1
Zenith 2
Red Seas 2
Absalom 1
Indigo Prime 1
DR & Quinch 1
Skizz 1
Harry Twenty 1
Stickleback 2
Leviathan 1
Luke Kirby 1
Sinister Dexter 2
Kingdom 2
Age of the Wolf 1
Savage 2
The VCs 1
Scarlet Traces 2
Movie Dredd 1
Button Man 2
Firekind 1
Tyranny Rex 1
Bradley 1
Harlem Heroes 1
Armoured Gideon 1
Defoe 2
Mazeworld 1
Dan Dare 1
What obvious stuff have I missed?

So I think this highlights what will be a big problem for me - you are only going to get a small proportion of most series. Of those that I want to re-read, I would rather get the whole lot. So Rebellion trades may well be a better bet (for me).

Finally read Dredd and Anderson.

Nice opener to the Dredd tale.

Anderson - the way Anderson
escaped from her captors
was a great sequence and LOL. Great stuff.

Fans eh? What are they like?

It's not enough for our idols to create the TV shows, the films, the books or the comics we love or to play for the team we love, or play the sport we love, they have to love them as well (?).

Well sorry reality check - the fans by definition do love whatever it is they are a fan of. The creators or players don't necessarily. By definition it is a job for those doing it professionally. Loving it is an optional extra. Some love it, some don't.

A few examples all by their own admission: Andre Agassi hated tennis, Patrick Stewart thought Star Trek was a load of old nonsense, Carrie Fisher and Harrision Ford thought Star Wars was silly when filming the original film. Most Premier League footballers aren't fans of the team they play for and a lot would go elsewhere if they could get more money and / or a better chance of winning a trophy.

Nothing wrong with any of that in my book. We care but have no right to expect them to. Do their best effort yes, but be a fan as well...it's too much to ask for.

Coming back to Ron Smith, I don't see anything that has been posted in this thread so far that says he didn't love comics ( it's actually not clear either way) just that he adopted a certain method to make sure he got his head down and produced the work he was being paid for.

Nothing wrong with that either.

I have never looked at a Ron Smith page and thought it wasn't finished.

If one can't tell the difference what difference does it make how he does it?

And indeed without knowing more details I don't think one can say it isn't a good approach.

For all we know he might have been easily able to compete the core of a page (and I would suggest the evidence is that that is the case) and he then used the additional time to add in little extras but put a cap on it - as in "enough is enough".

Also some people tend to work better when there is a deadline. It stops you faffing about and makes you get on with. Better that than endless prevaricating over it.

Anyway I'll judge it in the end results and they have always looked mighty fine to me.
