LOL.

If they are all that price (I haven't checked) that's over 2 grand, so I'll pass. Or at least wait until my reading list is more manageable and get them digitally. But that would involve getting a decent tablet to read them on. Oh well back to Nikolai Dante and the Mega Collection for me (so there is an upside :D )

Wow the physical books are very expensive

£72 on Amazon for Annihilation Book 1!!!

But only £4.27 for Kindle.

So ...you're sure this is worth it?

So are there complete collected editions of Abnett's Guardians of the Galaxy?

All I have to go on is Wikipedia and it's not clear to me which ones I need to get. e.g. Is Annihilation part of it?

During Annihilation Abnett only wrote Nova mini, he was more involved in Annihilation Conquest but Starlord miniseries that actually kickstarts GOTG is written by Giffen. TBH reading only GOTG material is kinda pointless, they're part of bigger story and best option is... read everything collected in series of omnibuses, from Annihilation to War of Kings Aftermath (or to find some TPB replacements since Annihilation Omni is OOP).

Whole cosmic saga started in Annihalion is good read, ofcourse there are also some awful stories in it, but GOTG and Nova (also Abnett and Lanning) works better as a part of whole cosmic narrative.

Oh dear that is way more complex than I imagined. I haven't heard of the cosmic saga before.

I guess it is this sort of thing that puts me off Marvel and DC -basically I haven't got a clue where to start. So I thought "let's just go with a writer I really like, such as Dan Abnett".

It is even more frustrating when you compare to 2000AD where I like to think I have a reasonable grasp on what's what.

News / Re: Rebellion To Reprint The Last American
05 April, 2017, 03:22:45 PM
So I have just received an email from Rebellion saying the special edition hardback is now on sale and encouraging me to buy it.

This is odd from two points of view.

1) I received an email yesterday saying my order of the same had been dispatched

and

2) as per the discussion a couple of weeks ago I thought it was sold out already - which seems to be the case on the 2000AD online shop

Oh my this is going to take ages to work through.

Indeed this must have been a labour of love.

In one of the original Ro-Busters stories, "The Tax Man Cometh", it's established that Howard Quartz is a British subject (here he's been handed a tax assessment of 238 billion Earth Credits).

However, in the more recent RETURN TO EARTH story (which takes place after The Mek-nificent Seven, but prior to Hammerstein joining Ro-Busters), Howard Quartz is an American citizen

That isn't necessarily contradictory - you don't have to be a British citizen to pay UK tax.

True enough. It's only contradictory when one of the taxmen in the story states outright that Howard Quartz is a British subject.

There are other ways to rationalize it, I suppose: He always had dual citizenship in the U.S./U.K. but moved his main base of operations to England after Hammerstein's assassination of his grand-nephew, the U.S. President, or something pretty close to that.

Interesting. Being called a British Subject rather than a British Citizen s important. You can originally have another country's nationality and then become a British Subject. So perfectly possible to be a British Subject and have a sibling retain the original nationality.

British Subject status has changed over the years, so who is to say what the rules will be by 2078 or 2180?

I saw a talk from Pat recently where he said Volgans aren't Soviets, no sir.

They are just from  another Eastern European / Asian country.

So perfectly possible to have Volgans in Invasion / ABC Warriors and Soviet Mega Cities in Judge Dredd.

That Fink page looks like McMahon applying his Slaine style to it (shoggy beast rather than Sky Chariots variant).

Prog only turned up yesterday, so only read Dredd and Brink so far.

Dredd fairly predictable so far. I am waiting for it to all go horribly wrong. I don't really get all the love for McRea's art. Personally I think he has done better e.g. Trifecta and the IDW Anderson.

Brink is Dan Abnett doing what he does best. A good solid tale, told well and in a completely understandable way that gets on with it. I am going to make a prediction here: the "ghost" is going to turn out to be

Brinkman's spirit
There's no problem if the Ro-Busters San Francisco earthquake story takes place 2 years after Hammerstein joined in 2078. Having it take place in 2180, 102 years later is a problem.

Sorry I must have missed a crucial detail - why is it a problem if it is set in 2180?

The sky-slums of Harlem fit the bill for me (sorry, couldn't get a better picture of them at short notice).  A lot of the stadiums we see seem very MC-1-y to me as well.

Ok fair enough - as with the picture Steve Green linked to, I can accept that as MC-1 like. Good spot.

Howard Quartz is ...kidnapped by his "little brother" Ebenezer, a withered old man who had instituted a plot to take over Ro-Busters. A later story introduces Quartz' great-aunt, who although middle-aged, is significantly younger-looking than Quartz' younger brother Ebenezer.

It is perfectly possible for an aunt to be younger than a nephew, especially in families with lots of child and whose children have lots of children. The time span of the oldest to the youngest of a particular set of siblings could be decades e.g. parents have a child at 16  / 17 and then one in later life. So apply that twice and great-aunt younger than great-nephew becomes a possibility, I guess.

I'll start by saying I know next to nothing about Marvel comics. I had heard of Civil War - I thought that was a thing they started last year ( I got a couple at Free Comic Book Day last year). So I took a look at the start of this thread and Civil War was mentioned there - from back in 2008. So, what is going on?

Also I was thinking of getting Guardians of the Galaxy purely because a) I loved the film last year and b) it's by Dan Abnett. That means it's got to be good, right?

positronic - yes you should definitely get the 3 Nemesis TPBs if you can because they are ace. I have them and the Deviant Edition (same as the Termight Edition but with a different cover). The are both worth having as the Termight / Deviant Editions have different panels re-drawn by Kevin O'Neill (as well as being in colour).

Jimbo - I don't recall that. Where is it from?
