Film Discussion / Paddington and certificate ratings
30 November, 2014, 06:24:18 PM
I have just taken my family to see Paddington and wanted to comment on the PG rating it has been given.

On Film 2014 this week there was an interview with one of the team behind the film (not sure if it was the Producer) and it was said that he could not believe it had not been given a U rating and that there was nothing in the film anyone would find distressing.

Well as they say the proof of the pudding is in the eating - my little boy did find it scary. I think the PG rating and the reason given by the BBFC are spot on.

Prog / Re: Prog 1909 : WHERE EAGLES DARE

A comment on Block Judge as a whole: I really like this type of "procedural" story. The fun is in seeing the new crimes that the cits get accused of e.g removing cushion safety labels. Indeed I would have been happy for this to run for a few more weeks  (I think there are two more weeks before Dark Justice starts).

News / Re: The Daily Dredds: Vol 1

Just got my copy today and it is a lovely book.

I do have a lot of these already from previous reprinting, but never knew the very first one was an adaptation of the first ever Dredd from Prog 2. That was quite an inspired idea to get a story out at short notice. One thing that doesn't sit will is the perp being described as a Futsie and then given a sentence, as it is well established that Futsie requires medical treatment not the cubes (or in this case Devil' Island). Indeed the 4th strip addresses just that. Also the foreword on this the genesis of this first strip is a bit odd with the asterixed explanation.

Sorry as I don't want to pick holes with what are very very minor quibbles - it really does look like a fantastic book and I can't wait to read /re-read these.

I'm not really one to buy collected editions of stuff I already own in the Progs, but I made an exception for this, as Zenith has always been one of my favourites and I have reread it since it was first published.

I got my copy yesterday and read the whole lot. It was every bit as good as I remember. It really works well when read as a complete story.

I always thought Steve Yeowell did his best work on Zenith, and I have to say this is fantastic stuff. It just seems to me to be more detailed than his work on same the Red Seas, which was becoming too minimalist for my taste.  I really like the clear and crisp line work. It reminds me of Brian Bolland and to me that is as good as it gets.

Really looking forward to Phases 2, 3 and 4. In the meantime I got my copy of the Daily Dredds today, so that should keep me going for a while.

I have found that the Progs can be in damaged state on the shelves. I am not sure if that happens because of the way they are stacked, or if that happens in transit, but it tends not to happen with the Meg, given it comes in a plastic bag which affords some level of protection. I therefore check all the Progs and carefully select the least damaged.

Since I recently had a couple of Progs where the pages where stuck together near the fold, I now flick through the Prog (risking spoilers) to make sure that isn't the case (I am not blaming the shop for that one - I guess it is more of a printing issue).

The main issue though is the way the Prog is treated at the till. The shop assistants seem to not realise this is a precious collectable item and not something to be read and chucked away - I cringe every time it gets bent to scan the bar code in. This actually seems to be be worse now with the new smaller bar code on the side.

The worse thing that has happened is when the shop assistant actually dropped my Prog and it fell between the counter and a side display and got wedged in. The fall caused the paper to ripple up at the bottom. I would have asked to swap it out for another, but on this occasion it was the last one in the shop so I was forced to buy it. In days gone by I would have not bought it there, but there are now very few shops around where I live and work that actually sell it (and that is London!!).

It has now got to the stage that if I notice damage (that wasn't my fault) I will take it back and ask to swap it for another copy on my way home.

I note the little pictures with the characters' names on them. ABC Warriors used to do that as well, at least in the early days, as did Slaine (in Tomb of Terror anyway).

I sometimes wish some of the modern thrills would do that as it can be hard to keep track when there is a large cast, some of whom only appear occasionally and hardly ever get referred to by name by other characters.

General / Judge Dredd: The Mega-City One Archives
26 October, 2014, 05:23:17 AM
Just seen something called "Judge Dredd: The Mega-City One Archives" for sale on an online retail site.

Does anyone know what this contains? It is described as a 13 volume history of Judge Dredd.

Is any one reading this? What do you think of it?

Prog / Re: Prog 1904 - Class War

Dredd - sheer class. Definitely the best this year. Dark Justice is going to have to special to top this.

Like others I am getting increasingly lost with Ichabod and Stickleback.  The reveal of the Cutter left me cold. Who is Lord Marius Ackroyd? Have we seen him before?

Greysuit is perfectly fine.

Kingdom - as others has said it is getting a bit repetitive. You could almost start playing "Kingdom Bingo". But at least I can follow it.

General / Re: Why and when did you stop reading 2000AD?
18 October, 2014, 08:12:29 PM
I was going to say I have never stopped reading the Prog and indeed have read every one from 127 onwards (and every Meg from issue 1), but I did have a false start.

I started off as a Starlord reader which I got every week from number 3 or 4. My first Prog was 86 when it merged with 2000AD which I wasn't very happy about. I got it for a few weeks but missed a couple of weeks then got it for a couple more and gave up  after 92.

I think I was miffed at (a) the demise of Starlord and being"forced" to buy something else  (b) the slightly different story setting for Robusters and Strontium Dog and  (c) at missing a couple of weeks.

I then bought 120  ( I think) and thought it was ok had no plans to continue. It was the jumping on Prog that was 127 that attracted me and I have been on board ever since.

At no have has it even ever crossed my mind to stop. I guess part of that is that I have only rarely ever bought any other comics, so it has never been a case of choosing between 2000AD and something else.

The number of City Blocks to citizens ratio is a thorny one even before Apocalyspe War and Chaos Day...  That thread will probably appear again you know....

As I am relatively new to the Forum I have n't seen a previous thread on this subject. Any chance of a link to it? I would be interested to read it.
