What the hell is this???

This doesn't look like it's going to help the Dredd 2 campaign.

Not a bad prog...

Dredd - Pretty sweet as usual. Lots going on - lots of perp storylines to remember. We get to feel Dredd and his team's pain..

Stickleback - This one lost me a bit this week. Is the slasher/slicer (can't remember) guy that they caught the same one who had been killing all those people in a brutal fashion - he seemed like a bit of a weed here so I can't imagine it being the same person? And who was the guy that was working with the 3 witches at the beginning of the series, killing off other competition for them... I originally thought they were the same person but it would seem not if this one is trying to avoid them.. I think I am missing something. The artwork doesn't make these things easy though!

Greysuit - This is going along nicely. I agree with what has been said before that it all seems a bit familiar. A very standard 'secret organisation with corrupt motives' affair. Enjoyable though.

Ichabod - This has been one of my favourites in the current lineup. Although like Stickleback, I am being left a bit baffled. Who are all these people that Ichabod knows?
Was that Zoe being attacked by the hunter with the bow and arrow?
Perhaps we aren't supposed to know yet but this strip seems to rely heavily on back story - going to have to check it out.

Kingdom - Still really not feeling this. Definitely the weakest of the current lineup. Fight scene. Tougher and tough. Get whet. Talk about how much of a badass Gene the Hackman is. Fight Scene. Tougher and tough. Get whet. Wet whet. And so on. I don't get the poor grammar 'dialect' either. It's getting annoying. I was super excited about this strip having not read it before and having loved Dan Abnett's other stuff. I'm reading Wild's End at the moment and it is leagues above this.

I always sound more negative than I want to - still worth picking up!

Yeah I guess the target audience of comics (and 2000AD) has changed over the years. It is interesting to see how Dredd and other strips have developed in terms of their complexity and storytelling.

In fact, I wonder what age the youngest readers are these days of 2000AD... considering half the references and stuff people notice and talk about on here goes over my head and I'm 27...

Wow - I am ashamed to say I've never actually read Dredd's first strip. Look how skinny he is!!

I'm probably going to get shot down here but I do feel like the old strips have suffered the test of time quite poorly - so much exposition from the narration and characters - "I'm going to shoot you now" sort of stuff that I assume is there because the reader isn't trusted to know what is going on just from looking at the art. It's really irritating to read and because I didn't read it first time round, there isn't that sense of nostalgia for me - I'm guessing it was incredible at the time. All of the older 'free' floppies from the Meg have the same exposition issues - Savage, Night Zero etc. It makes me wonder how stuff like Watchmen got it so right in 1986 (admittedly 9 years after 2000AD #1) when most other strips were still doing this. I've been meaning to check out Zenith after the hype on here but does this read the same?

Obviously this is where it all started and the concepts are all there, but I'm glad Dredd has developed into the amazing strip it is today!

Valkyries was truly terrible.

Lobster Random this month was a slight improvement - there seems to be a fair amount of love for this strip across the board.. I wasn't a fan particularly. I just can't get into the character, however much a mechaphile with lobster arms should be a good premise..

Some stonking artwork though.

The Meg is certainly winning at the moment.

Judge Dredd - Bloody awesome artwork as usual from Flint. He's definitely in my top 5 art droids.

Lawless - This is ticking along nicely, even if we have had few too many arse/boob panels of the main star in the bath/in a towel etc. Less of that this week and an introduction to some new characters. I am enjoying this strip even if it's nothing particularly new or ground breaking.

Man from the Ministry - This started off grabbing my attention, but by the finale this week it has lost me a bit. I'm not really sure why
the pilot was taken by an alien race, to then be modified and then beat another alien race simply by driving into them with a ship... if they were that easy to defeat, the whole journey seems a bit unnecessary
. Perhaps this was just the first of many battles and questions will be answered in a future series..?

Dredd - Enjoying the film spin off series. I agree with those who have asked for Anderson to be present in these strips - her character was one of the things that made the film so great. Looking forward to the finale next month though.

I enjoyed the articles as usual - always an interesting read seeing how artists and writers got into comics... even if it always makes me a bit jealous..

Top form!

Good as these comics are Copperhead 2 is best of the bunch. Its been described as a fairly typical Sci-Fi western down this thread and it is, but done with such panache its a treat and for me the most 2000ad comic I'm reading outside TGG itself. Superb.

Dammit - now I'm going to have to check this out too. My wallet is complaining.

Kingdom - This is my least favourite. The art is all a bit colourful for my liking - it's all a bit Marvel, without the memorable characters. It's an entertaining enough read but if it was it's own floppy, I would definitely pass.

All in all, a pretty decent prog! :D

Have you read the previous two Kingdom trades? Some of the best 2000ad stuff I've read without doubt.

No I have not read the previous 2 installments so I shouldn't really judge maybe. Having said this, I haven't read all previous stories of Ichabod and Stickleback yet I still think they are excellent this time round. Maybe Kingdom just isn't for me.. maybe I'm not seeing it for what it is but it just seems a bit simplistic at the moment - mostly slicing and shouting 'get whet'.

I agree that we have a solid set of stories picking up pace here.

Dredd - This is great - every issue is like a mini-episode of what I would imagine a Dredd TV-series to be like. Lots of perps being busted and yet building to something bigger - Wagner has still got Dredd down to a tee.

Stickleback - I do enjoy these series even if most of the references are going over my head and if sometimes the art is a little hard to follow. I'm interested in the story even though I don't know everything that has gone before so that is a good sign.

Greysuit - This, second to Dredd, is my highlight of the current roster. Great character building and dark portrayal of British secret services. Not seen anything of this before this series so this was a nice suprise.

Ichabod - Anything by Rob Williams I seem to absolutely love - this is no exception. However, as others have mentioned, I'm a little baffled as I've only read the series before this so I've missed a fair whack of the story. I may have to go back and read the whole thing in TPBs. Is the guy who's being hanged along with Ichabod, Charon? Or have I got that totally wrong..?? And who is the monster we are introduced to in this episode - the hunter?

Kingdom - This is my least favourite. The art is all a bit colourful for my liking - it's all a bit Marvel, without the memorable characters. It's an entertaining enough read but if it was it's own floppy, I would definitely pass.

All in all, a pretty decent prog! :D

I loved this first issue.

Love Culbard's artwork.. not many artists like him about that I see. Has anyone read his graphic novel Celeste?

Just succumbed to buying Birthright #1 as well due to a special offer in the local comic store (Travelling Man in Manchester).. another Tomlinson effort (same guy as Nailbiter).

I'm not generally a fantasy genre kinda guy but there was something about it that is gonna make me try issue 2. We will see if this gets added to the pull list..

Worth checking out if you liked Flight of the Navigator and other 80s childhood adventure movies.

Thought I'd add my current pull-list to the discussion!

Sex Criminals: This has been a great, fun read with lots of great hidden art (mostly involving funny porn titles). Not sure how long it can keep going but it's definitely worth checking out, even if you do get funny looks reading it on the train..

Outcast: Jumped on the hype bandwagon with this - great atmosphere and intrigue building so far.

Southern Bastards: This finished it's first story arc but I think this is the best thing I have read coming out at the moment. TPB was just released so check it out - it's like nothing I've read before and completely brutal.

Wytches: Picked up the first issue of this last night - another hyped Image book but I love Jock's artwork so it was a no-brainer.

Imperial: Already on issue 3/4 - a light hearted twist on a superhero tale - actually made me laugh out loud at least once which is rare for a comic book. I haven't met anyone else following this but I think it's a good, light read. It reminds me a bit of Rob Williams' Ordinary.

Wild's End: Dan Abnett and INJ Culbard's anthropomorphic tale.. first issue (of 6?) was interesting, with a shocking ending contrasting against the quaint opening scenes. I've not checked out Dark Ages by the same pair but I've heard great things about that mini-series as well. Seems like these two are knocking it out of the park. I've been meaning to pick up Celeste; a full graphic novel by Culbard as well. Anyone read it?

Men of Wrath: Another Jason Aaron mini-series - I picked up the first issue yesterday and am excited to read another gritty story by the writer of Southern Bastards and Scalped.

Nailbiter: Picked up the first TPB of this the other day - pretty pulpy, trashy horror stuff, but for some reason leaves me wanting to know more and follow the story. Worth checking out - some of the 'nailbiting' imagery sends a chill down your spine.

Obviously picking up Saga and Walking Dead as well... and there are so many more I would love to check out (Trees, The Fade Out.. ). Along with my subscription to the prog and meg, this is becoming an expensive habit... damn.

Awesome prog. Loved Greysuit!

Can someone give me a bit of an overview of what's happened previously in Stickleback.. someone said his identity has been revealed but I didn't get what was being referred to...

Duh.

This current run of strips has been pretty solid. Dredd, Brass Sun, Jaegir, and Aquilla have been pretty good all around. Without Black Shucking being the.... dog in the bunch.

Yeah to be fair - I have been quick to forget Jaegir - this has been one of my favourite new series as of late - such fantastic artwork from Simon Coleby too. I've been loving his art as of late - Royals: Masters of War was awesome.
