Film & TV / Re: Current TV Boxset Addiction

The show runner came out and said audiences are more sophisticated and need a larger cast and won't settle for one man in a car, which is why he changed so much of the already-successful pilot.  Uh, yes they would, and that's what they wanted - one man and his car.  Such a shame as I think Justin Bruening was great as a new Michael Knight.

Before you watch KR 2010 just go in knowing it's NOT Michael and KITT and you should have a blast.  It's a completely new riff on the whole idea.

I remember when Sky first started showing 24. They would show "this week's" episode and then immediately show "next week's episode. It was soooo exciting and you would watch it. Well that worked...for all of one week.

That's the one show which would be the exception for me.  I've still only seen the first two seasons but both on DVD after missing a few episodes after the first few weeks on TV for the first season and then it moved to Sky which I didn't have at the time.  With it being real-time watching it on DVD becomes very addictive!  It's the one show that suits this for me for obvious reasons, as it's being watched at the right speed instead of 'too quickly'.

The pilot movie for the sequel series in 2008 I really enjoyed, it set it all up really well and had loads of hidden references (Mike puts on a leather jacket on top of his red shirt just as he meets KITT for the first time, which is what The Hoff wore in his pilot etc), but for the series NBC gave it to Executive Producer Gary Scott Thompson, creator of the first Fast & the Furious, and you could tell.  I really didn't like it.

Loads of pointless extra characters (it's meant to be "one man can make a difference") and KITT was now a Transformer.  There were glimpses of hope towards the end after the awful KARR episode but by then it was too late.  Those final few they had the right dynamic between Michael and KITT but it'd already been cancelled I think.

Such a shame as it was so full of potential in the movie!  And Val Kilmer had great delivery with KITT's new dry sense of humour.

Yeah I completely agree about KR2000 and TKR.  KR2000 was okay in places but felt like fan-fiction rather than a sequel, and TKR had one good episode with Duke and The Beast out on their own which felt like the original series, but other than that it was terrible.

I actually liked Knightrider 2010.  You ever seen it?

For something like Doctor Who, I love the fact that its event TV, that I know friends are watching at the same time and we can talk about it in the pub later. As with other shows like Walking Dead and GoT, it is nice to have something to look forward to each week.

---

Some of us are old enough to remember when programmes were on once and that was it unless you were lucky enough to catch the repeat. If you wanted to see a programme you had to stay in and watch it. Unthinkable these days.

If it's a new series I've always preferred to watch it weekly for the same reasons as others, if it's something I've already seen and just want to buy on Blu Ray I'll binge when I get it normally.  The strange thing is that even this is changing for me.  I'm currently working my way through Knight Rider (of all things) which I obviously saw in the 80s, then the 90s reruns and then in the early 00s on Bravo.  It's been 13 years and I'm loving it, but after binging on the first two seasons I'm now watching one episode a week so that I can work through various other series too.  (I see The A-Team on Netflix for example.)

It just makes it last longer and I like watching several series (including both new and old) at once now, like the ultimate TV channel (oh that's a bit sad, isn't it?).  It makes each episode something special and for series which have ongoing storylines I feel binging on them can be detrimental.  I binged on Battlestar Galactica and now wish I hadn't as this five year story felt like it took place over a couple of months instead, so the ending was less climactic for me in a way.

I do remember the old days and missing an episode of Babylon 5 because I got caught up on my way home from school and hadn't set the VCR.  I almost cried...

Film & TV / Re: Jurassic World (2015)

I was a huge Jurassic Park fan as a teen, reading the original books, loving the films, collecting the comic etc.  I even liked the third film for the most part, even though it was a bit short, didn't really have much of a plot and the ending was a bit naff... but let's face it that Spinosaurus attack in the rain is still spectacular, especially knowing it's actually there (in a mechanical way) and not CGI!

But anyway, this new trailer looks awesome and I can't wait!  Reading the comments on the Jurassic Park and Universal Entertainment UK Facebook pages it seems to be getting mainly positive reactions there which is a good thing.  I always try to go to movies with an open mind, but already I can't wait for this.

I've actually been playing the Jurassic Park Builder game on my phone, quite addictive actually, so I'm hyped for this!

Film & TV / Re: A Blair Witch re-watch WITH SPOILERS
22 April, 2015, 11:05:51 AM
I remember going to see The Blair Witch on Halloween night at the cinema, knowing full well it was really lost footage, but that didn't diminish it for me.  I found it fascinating and brilliantly done, more creepy than scary though... until that final moment.  Those last few seconds made me jump, but it was the walk back to my friend's house that really did it!

Opening night was at Halloween and so we were walking the two miles back to his house around midnight with fireworks going off in the far distance, which sounded exactly like the SFX in the background of the forest in the film.  We walked past what we thought was a long dark lane, tall black trees (there were no street lights on this road) either side and we dared each other to walk down it.  We couldn't!  (The next day we walked past and it was just someone's driveway and was no more than about 20ft in length.)

But then we walked past a church which had these huge metal gates rising about ten feet above our heads, and just as we did so this wind picked up from nowhere and the gates creaked over towards us.  That was it - we ran screaming like little girls (we were in our early twenties at this stage) back to his house.  I felt so terrified I ran off in the wrong direction and only got back thanks to both of us realising we were on our own and screaming each other's names.  Thinking back it's hilarious, we knew we were being daft but the sudden fright and the adrenalin kicked in.

Lying on his floor that night in a sleeping bag, every time I shut my eyes the final frames of the film flashed into my mind and I felt like the witch was watching me and I'd be wide awake again.  It was the most surreal experience and the movie just got into our minds that night (no, there was no drink involved).  Never had a film that terrified me AFTER watching it.  Great stuff!

This is my current fix.  Just over 70 hours, currently about halfway through the third season (of four) and you know what?  I'm loving every minute of it!

Oh dear lord!  I'd forgotten you'd shared those photos from February on here (only just joined), it's still crushing to my soul that my head just doesn't fit that helmet!

I've still to get into the Marvel movies, and I'm reminded of Ed Byrne on Mock the Week's 'Unlikely Lines To Hear in a Superhero Movie' round:

"The earth is opening up and the gates of hell are coming out!!  Thor! ......... um... hit it with your hammer..."

Thanks for the welcome everyone!  ZenArcade - I'm guessing that's who I think is, and that'd be the person who invited me in the first place...?

Dondontdare, very good impression of the internet there.  Spot on in fact!

Spaceghost, very good!  Hope you've got the dance moves down too...

Welcome to the board / Hello - New 'old' reader
20 April, 2015, 10:57:59 PM
Hi everyone,

I'm still a new reader... although can I still say that since I've been reading since Prog 1900 from last year and since then I've subscribed to both comics (actually did so within a couple of weeks), got my letter printed in Prog 1917, received the gorgeous When Judges Go Bad graphic novel for that, also won Phase One and Two of Zenith through the comic's FB page and have bought and consumed the first two volumes of the Judge Dredd Complete Case Files.  Also been invited to and met up with the Belfast 2000AD Discussion Group lot once so far too.  You could say I'm rather taken with 2000AD!  And all at the tender young age of, um, 37.

I've had a look around the board and it seems very different to other discussion forums I've joined in the past (though I see I'm not the only one who thinks this) and it actually looks like a nice place to hang out during work... I mean at home!

One quick question, how do I edit my profile and add a picture?  Or is that something else we can't do until we become a full member?  If so, no worries, I completely understand the reasoning behind that.

Looking forward to getting stuck in and getting to know people,

Phil.
