General / Re: AUGUST ART COMP - VOTING THREAD
30 August, 2016, 06:43:38 PM
I love this art competition! So much talent and creativity!

  • -MikeD-2 - Ambushed by Death
  • james newell - The Full Weight of the Law
  • Steven Denton - The Old Judge
  • Trevor Denham - Dredd & The Dragoons
  • Martintds - Return to Deadworld...D'oh!

Honourable mentions go to...

  • awesomeheroblue - The Death of Dredd
  • Adrian Bamforth - Dredd & Vienna: "Just for once, let me look on you with my *own* eyes"
  • Andy Lambert - The Night the Law Died
  • baef - Stubborn Heart
  • The Legendary Shark1 - Saviour

I love all of them though. This was definitely a hard choice as all entries were amazing.

I really struggled to imagine Dredd dying. What could possibly kill Dredd? I did attempt drawing 100 perps fighting Dredd, but that was just hard. Then I remembered how Omar died in The Wire, and how it was a shock because he was nearly invincible and just plain stubborn too... so I imagine Dredd would die in a boring mundane way, alone in a Mega City alley.
Stepped out of my comfort zone to produce this one, took me some time but it was definitely fun!

I've heard good things about the bamboo stylus, but I would take PJ's advice initially. Try something cheap and see how that works first.
Procreate is great but is quite fiddly with a lot of options for customisation, so it may be the app rather than your finger. I moved to Sketches 2 on the iPad Pro (with an Apple Pencil) purely there was less for me to fiddle with (and get lost in) :)

That was my experience anyway. Once I've mastered the basics on Sketches 2 I'm going to graduate to Procreate :)
Overall though I tend to find it's worth mastering a cheap basic option before digging into something more expensive and feature rich.

These illustrations are sweet Paul. You've found a new fan :) Loving those colours too!

Woops! Typo while I should have been paying attention in work...

QuoteI run Tharg's choice for the Chopper comp with an entry that was an hours effort.

I run Tharg's choice for the Chopper comp with an entry that was an hours effort. It was completely unexpected but made me very happy. Just sayin' :)

I love all the art in these threads. There's some serious talent here and some very well crafted submissions :) there's also some great humour. I love the variety. Please keep this competition going because personal ambitions aside (I do have them) it's highly entertaining!

After lots of sketching and thinking, I've finally decided on a potential entry for this month. Watch this space!

I bought one of these (but A2 size) about a year ago and it's been perfect for me!

Cheap and practical, but probably less fun to put together

Can you link to a higher resolution version @Jase?
Your figures are well proportioned but the muscles look stiff and unnatural. They're not particularly organic looking.
The angles are nice but I wonder if the centre panel really needs to be constrained to a panel? I'd probably let it bleed out across the page, particularly the bottom of the page as that's where the perspective is leading the eye.
The last panel looks a bit out of place to me. What's going on? It looks out of context, maybe because it's the only panel that doesn't have Karn in it.

Don't get me wrong, there's some fine drawing skills here from what I can see :) I really like what I can see of the ink work in the first panel.

A page a week is awesome for that kind of quality of art and storytelling :) I'll be sharing this with a few friends. Great work!

Here's my intended (and late) entry for the Art Competition - Halo Jones Book IV

I'm not convinced it's entirely successful, I should have paid much more attention to the perspective and drawing explosions is just hard! I do enter these things just for fun though :)
Any feedback would be awesome!

I didn't enter, do I still get to vote?  :D Some awesome artwork this month! This was another tough choice!

1. Adrian Bamforth: Halo, Space Pirate
2. Uwe de Witt: Halo Jones
3. Karl Brown: Her Name Was Halo

Honourable mentions:
Brian Corcoran: Book IV: OUT
James Newell: The Secret Ballad

QuoteAll great stuff and well done all - though I'm disgusted that more choppers find their way into the art comp. ;o)

I didn't finish my entry in time :( Picking up my brush after a 21km run is ambitious! I'll post it on "Does my art look big in this" thread after voting has closed :)

I remember white dog shit in the 80s. I don't remember seeing any dog vultures though

That Mark Higgins piece is awesome, I love it!

The Adrian Bamforth cover blew me away though :) that's an awesome drawing and a very original take too!

The bar has been set very high again this month!
