Film & TV / Re: The Witcher Netflix Series

I just think that in this instance the power dynamics of a larger Empire (USSR) swallowing up smaller satellite countries (Poland)  is something I would like to see explored rather than a black (or other race) versus white power dynamic. The book also contains this racial exploration with how humans treat those of other races elves, dwarves etc. I'm not saying that there should be no non white people just that I personally would prefer the material to be explored in the way I believe it was written.

I am on the third Witcher book at the moment and really enjoying the series. I would really like to see this on Netflix. However I wish they wouldn't make the Nilfgaardians and Ciri non-white. It's not that I'm against representation and inclusion in media but I think that there is probably lots of material written by non white writers and artists that could be developed. My understanding of the books is that they are a critique by a Polish artist of how Russia incorporated other Eastern European countries into itself in the aftermath of WW2. Making the Nilgaardians non white brings a racial element to the narrative that changes this significantly. Or maybe not, maybe the whole evil empire thing is done to death .. Thoughts anyone?

My Halo arrived yesterday. Almost had a heart attack when I saw the box, it was pretty beat up and I was expecting the worst but it was actually fine. Really wish they'd send them in more appropriate packaging. Figurine is absolutely beautiful. I'm so happy I went with the premium sub.

Is it because everyone is so limited?

My favourite scene (well) was from when they had the picnic and when they were finished they just threw the rubbish everywhere and left. It was so shocking but people used to do that!

Maybe you just didn't understand that
one of the crew is from that planet so it's like ok.
This show is crazy
they leave that human colony behind because of General Order 1 but then they go and do this
Episode 6 was much better than 5. It still doesn't feel very Trek though. I was genuinely surprised by how little thought they gave to
forcing a metamorphosis on an entire population, forever changing the culture of two sentient species.
At least Tilly wasn't in it much (but her line about galaxy pie still made me want to punch someone).

I liked her at the start but since the actress has shown her comic chops it seems more and more of her character centres around being awkwardly funny. I initially liked her but I don't like the way the writers have developed her character so far.

That's a shame you see her that way.

For me she's also working as a contrast to the angst complexities of Burnham and the straight arrow Federationism of Pike. And plays well (and funny) against both.

I think her character is best described as two lazy stereotypes merged together neither of which have any great depth.

Oh god please no!

I wanted to watch a good bit of this before I made a comment and now feel sufficiently up to date to say something. Where to begin? I'm not the biggest Star Trek fan but was as excited as anyone to hear about a new show. I suppose I have always considered ST to be a ensemble affair; various groups coming together in harmony to promote the best human traits. Instead this series revolves around one really unlikable protagonist who represents (to me anyway) the worst humanity has to offer.  After singlehandedly starting a war with the Klingons and attacking her direct commander she should have never been allowed near the bridge of a ship again. After watching Season 1 it becomes apparent why Lorca kept her around but surely after the rushed ending of the war she should have been honourably or dishonourably discharged from Starfleet yet there she is back on the bridge. If she isn't the problem then she has the answer to the problem. It's just infuriating how she keeps failing up. Her back story is even more infuriating. She could have been raised by any prominent Vulcan family but no she has to be Spock's sister which I understand has never been mentioned before. Every story line revolves around how much better and smarter she is than everyone else but instead of being someone you admire she comes across as an insufferable Mary Sue. So amazing is Michael that after starting the war and getting thousands killed she is forgiven by the Discovery crew after a mere 3 or 4 episodes. However she could not extend the same forgiveness to Tyler. The difference being that she used her agency to determine her fate and he did not. I could go on but I think I've made my point. Oh one more, I'm glad that they remind us about her Vulcan upbringing so often because if they didn't you'd knew guess from how she acts.

Other things I don't like .. the design of the Klingons was bad in the first season and worse in the second. The character of Tilly gets worse and worse - they didn't have the dialogue for a happy fat character and a cute ditsy character so they just merged them in her. Her initial youthful pep has turned into something far more superficial. Although I am delighted that
Dr Culver has returned, if characters don't stay dead then any future death will not be treated with any real significance, missions won't be taking seriously by me anyway.
Also the design of the uniforms are wrong, I actually love the Disco uniform but they seem more futuristic than the new uniforms we see in S2.

Having said all that I'm still watching but
Spock has yet to appear onscreen and Tyler back on the bridge
so that may change ...

Maybe there is no later?

Had a thought the other day .. what if the white walkers are on the move because it's summer where they're from and they have no choice but to go South or they'll die.

First of all this version is amazing and that film looks brillaint.

Second, this playground song is about a woman who murders her baby and is hung for it. It's seriously messed up but I remember learning it as a child and doing that clapping game to it. Mad.

I'm with Matt on this one, really thought this was good. I'll never watch it again though ..

Hereditary

What a disappointment.

Ponderously dull, this two hour film meanders through a lot of nothing for the first 110 minutes before descending into cliche.

The
decapitation
half an hour in is a stand out shock but, really, this is not worth your time.

It plods along giving the characters nothing to do - Gabriel Byrne is criminally wasted - and seems to mistake bass rumbling for plot development. Is there anything as lazy as a rumbling soundtrack to signpost "this is meant to be tense and/or scary"? Although that is needed here, as the writing is neither.

Could not disagree more, but I value your opinion.

Recently found a 1977 animated version of the Hobbit & a 1980 animated version of The return of the King. They are simplified versions of the stories but are worth a watch for the novelty value
