Film & TV / Re: Game of Thrones prequel

It's been a while since I read the books but I loved book Stannis. He's a very honourable character who is slowly descending into dishonour but he's more sinned against than sinning so to speak. See the thing is that in the book it's maybe more emphasised that he IS the rightful Kind of Westeros (being Robert's next legitimate male relative). He also knows that Cersei has been having sex with her brother, conspired to get Jon Arryn (well respected and liked character) killed, probably killed Robert and chopped Ned's head off. In the greater scheme he's the only honourable man in a sea of scoundrels. However, he had fallen under the influence of Melisandre, I think she befriends the wife first and then gains Stannis trust, the next thing they are burning people on the beach. It's all shown as part of his growing desperation to a) do the right thing and b) be recognised as the King. He also has Melisandre telling him he is the reincarnation of legendary figure Azor Ahai and you don't get to see that in the show really.

Yeah, I never really saw the thing about Stannis in the show. I kept hearing how he was supposed to be this awesome character. All I ever got the impression of that he was a weak, pussywhipped gobshite that had plans and executed them like an utter moron, getting people killed. How anyone followed him on the show is beyond me.

As for this prequel, hopefully it just does its own thing, because most things that are remotely successful and have spin-offs that try to capture what made the original brilliant ends up failing.

It's such a shame because it could have been SO good but they completely lost their objectivity.

Lately I have been listening to Dead Rock Stars - two music journalists spend up to an hour discussing the life and death of some of our most loved musicians (Lemmy, Bowie, Lennon, Elvis etc). They are both really knowledgeable about music but one of the journalists (Mick Wall) had been around for quite some time and has some really amazing first hand stories about the subjects. There are only about 20 episodes online though which is the only downside: https://play.acast.com/s/deadrockstars

Also LOVING swindled. It's just one guy telling the story of various cons, heists, crimes and other nefarious goings on : http://swindledpodcast.com/

I too am a tv magpipe .. picking up and dropping shows seemingly at whim ..

Started watching Star Trek : Discovery and really wanted to but do not like it. Michael is a one dimension Mary Sue who keeps failing up, no one follows orders, the new Klingons are dreadful and that MF'ing
spore drive
Watched Sabrina and Mary Sue strikes again, very surprised a pair of centuries old witches can't keep a handle on one teenage witch. And
no talking Salem?? what in the name of the Dark Lord is going on here?
Also started to watch Mars on Netflix which is a weird documentary / sci-fi series mashup. I don't think I'll be finishing that one.

Watched the Ted Bundy Tapes .. I must see if there's a thread about this on here somewhere. Enjoyed it but hated the way they glossed over the crimes to feed into Bundy myth ..

Also watched 'Abducted in Plain Sight', if you like shouting 'what the f**k?' at your monitor check this out. As someone else said .. you know this is messed up when the
aliens
aren't even the weirdest part.

I don't normally watch horror movies but I gave this a go and regretted it as scenes from the movie kept coming back to me usually when I was just about to fall asleep.

For me it was
the mother on the roof and sawing her own head off, the decapitated body floating into the tree house and the naked people just appearing in the house
.

Genuinely creepy.

Watched this recently too; some of it is horrifying in a way that has seeped into my brain and made me uneasy for days.

These bits were the
family's reaction to the awful decapitation though, and the fact that the poor mam had to find Charlie's body in the car
.

Things get a little bit silly when
people start flying and chalks write on boards though,
and I can't help thinking it would have been better without the supernatural elements at all (in a Kill List kind of way, perhaps).

I didn't like The Predator. The whole premise regarding the autistic son .. there's nothing wrong with having autism so
what the heck was that people with autism are the next step in human evolution plotline all about?
Halloween (2018) - more like uhhh HalloWANK.
This is the film that cemented in my mind that Hollywood is officially cancelled.  Nothing new in the tank, just recycling brands with soft reboots that ignore producer or fanboy head canon ala The Force Awakens.  I should actually have thought this with The Predator, which is a good 1980s-style b-movie romp, it just has fuck all to do with the Predator franchise, but that was actually entertaining, while Halloween is just a sub-par slasher movie cruising on the reputation of the original and the premise of being the only "true" sequel to a genre classic rather than just the third reboot of it.

Karlos have you had a reply yet? I emailed them about two weeks about the swapped end papers and have had no response. That facebook link just brings me to the 2000AD FB page, how do I contact HP?

Suspiria: haven't seen the original but really enjoyed this remake. It's quite long but runs at a decent pace and is visually delightful. Didn't find out until after that there is a post credits scene so if you go to see it then you might hang about for that.

I really like LPOTL but yes they can be very shouty. The Norwegian Death Metal series was one of my favourites along with Carl Panzram. Loved Aum Shinriyko and Jonestown. They just finished up a three parter on the West Memphis Three which was fantastic as well.

I also enjoy (from the same network) Wizard and the Bruiser : https://soundcloud.com/wizbru

For more political comedy I have enjoyed a few episodes of The Dollop as well. The Opioid Crisis and the Trump ones were unbelievably good but I just can't get past that guys laugh which is incredibly annoying.

I also gave Dirty John and Doctor Death a go - they were ok. I'm working my way through the Thrillcast at the moment and I want to give that 'West Cork' a go - it's about the tragic murder of a French woman (Sophie du Plantier) here in Ireland and the investigation surrounding her death. It's only available on Audible though.

The only podcast I wouldn't recommend it Shit Town - please don't waste 8 hours of your life on this.

QuoteI describe the style of this podcast as 'The Douche' from Parks and Recreation. It is good but they can be as tiresome as they are entertaining. The Aum Shinrikyo series is great.

I wouldn't go quite that far . But yeah, it has a tone best described as 'shouty'.

I really enjoyed the first few seasons of Arrow but when he show became more about his personal relationships than him I lost interest. I never read the Arrow comics but his relationship with Black Canary is a huge part of his story but the tv show has rewritten that to the detriment of his overall story arc (imo). In Season 1 he fights crime and is pretty tech savvy himself but by season 5 he can barely boil a kettle without the assistance of his team, one member in particular. It's such a shame because I really liked that actor but as the show went on it became more about his assistant and what she is capable of than him. They had an opportunity to restart completely after the
Adrian Chase
season but didn't go with it. I just couldn't take it anymore. It's interesting though than Marc Guggenheim who is the producer is the writer for X-Men Gold which I am really enjoying. So I know he's capable of writing good stuff; I just don't know why he's not doing that for Arrow.

I came all the way back to ask how you are getting on with this? I quit after season 5, I just couldn't take it anymore ..

I decided to watch Arrow instead. Considering it's made by the same people, it's darker than Supergirl and less comedic, although both shows do drift into both territories on occasion.

Two series in, I've enjoyed Arrow a lot
