General / It could work..
23 February, 2002, 10:15:18 PM
Just given it some thought.

Dredd Reckoning on a 40 mill dollar budget with no big names and a nationwide cinema release could work.
No straight to video please!

Best to release the movie outside of summer or winter in the USA. Less competition you see. Greater chance of a larger box office return maybe.

Have Dredd on the streets faithful to the comic, a high action quota and aim it at 18 to 30 year old males.

Shoreline, listen to me grud's sake!:)

Courtesy of Komic World. An interview with John Wagner regarding Dredd the movie.

I hope Rebellion don't mind me pasting it here!:)

KW: Given some of the recent rumblings about another possible Dredd Movie, have you been thinking of dusting off the treatmet you and Alan did in 1995?

JW: I can't remember a treatment. Did we do one?

KW: We've had a question sent in that suggests you did, but i'm not going to side with them over you. If you did do a Dredd Film script, what would you make it? I guess thats the real question

JW: Maybe we did. I don't know where my memory's gone. In fact, I've recently been to see Rebellion who have asked me to come up with some ideas/a treatment. Which is what I'm thinking about at the moment. Any suggestions?

KW: I'm sure there's a few opinions out there John!

KW: What did you think of the last movie?

JW: It had some nice special effects, Mean looked great as did the ABC warrior, but it was the wrong story.

KW: Most people seem to have a generally mixed view, with elements of the strip well portrayed but others almost totally lost.

Wake: Judge Death from progs 149-151 would work pretty well ... with Anderson making the ultimate sacrifice (until the sequel)

If you want some stuff from John on writing a Dredd novel and Dredd v aliens...I can paste it here!

If you don't want to know, look away now. No story content is revealed!

2000 A.D. #1285-1288 - Future lawman Judge Dredd finds himself in an underwater adventure in Escape From Atlantis, by John Wagner and Paul Marshall, while in Deaky Poobar, We Hardly Knew Ye, Dan Abnett and Steve Parkhouse take hitmen Sinister Dexter from the bloodsoaked streets of Downlode to the United Kingdom of Greater Britain. Meanwhile, there's more dark fantasy from Steve Moore in Tales of Telguuth; the action heats up in Atavar, by Dan Abnett and Richard Elson; and Russian Rogue Nikolai Dante pulls off his greatest sting in The Romanov Job, by Robbie Morrison and Simon Fraser.

JUDGE DREDD MAGAZINE V. 4 #10 - An all-new, 14-page case for the Judge; heart-stopping action in Missionary Man: Place of the Dead part 2, by Gordon Rennie and John Ridgway; the conclusion of Wardog, by Dan Abnett, Patrick Goddard & Dylan Teague; and fall into Bad Company, as the first book of this classic future war thriller by Peter Milligan, Brett Ewins & Jim McCarthy continues.

General / Dredd versus Aliens?
22 February, 2002, 02:07:27 AM
I remember hearing about this project a while back and yet have heard nothing since.

I believe Cam Kennedy was doing the art.

Anyone here or at Rebellion know anything more about it?

Just curious.

I want a Dredd story set on Titan.

Much potential for drama.

Dredd investigates a murder on Titan. Dredd versus corrupt judge inmates.

Man it could be good!

General / 2 of the worst dredd ever. Does this count?
19 February, 2002, 12:00:23 AM
I know the list is really just for characters but I have to get this off my chest...

The worst Dredd story ever, well by J Wagner anyway, was the one when he reintroduced the Angel gang. Remember that?

Pa and Junior fell into some nets, instead of the lava.
Even though we saw them die in the child child!

And the other crime is the art on 'In the year 2120'. I think the watcher posted this before. The art by Jason Brashill was the most inappropriate I have ever seen. Completely ruined the impact of this very important and rather good story wise Dredd story. 0 out of 10 for that one.

Dave Bishop, shame forever on you for getting Brashill to do cartoon line work on that!

16 February, 2002, 06:33:33 PM
With the popcorn. Munch munch munch. Trailers pass you by...then on screen:

A boot is tightened...

The following words in bold, appear on screen to heavy menacing music:

HE AIN'T NO SUPER HERO.

Gloves are fitted to a hand.

AND HE SURE CAN'T FLY.

The eagle of Justice is fitted to a shoulder.

A helmet (seen from behind) is placed on a head.

ACCEPT NO IMITATION.

A badge is placed on the uniform. It reads Dredd.

ARE YOU READY....

Close on Dredd's visor.

FOR THE TOUGHEST MEANEST HERO OF THEM ALL?

We see a series of clips from movie of Dredd on bike, firing lawgiver, explosions etc.

COMING SOON...

Then a split second glimpse of Dredd's face.

JUDGE DREDD, LAWMAN OF THE FUTURE

Dredd shoots at the screen.

PRAY YOU HAVE NOTHING TO HIDE.

Trailer ends.

I am currently reading my old 2k's. From late 70's onwards.

I think all the best stories in 2k had a simple, clear storytelling approach. Each part would have enough dialogue but never excessive, a measure of action but which was never superfluous to the plot and effective art.

The old stories just told a simple, fairly linear beginning, middle and end story. (Storming Heaven didn't even have a beginning!) Wagner, Grant, Mills and Day were the perfect model. I feel this is the way all new writers should write.

I feel we don't need to much crude Morrison or smart arse Abnett. This is not the true writing style of 2k.

And we don't need Cor Blimey type Carver Hale writing or LDS hippy Rennie purple prose.

Just good stories told simply.

If you disagree, read some old progs and compare the writing style to that of Dante, Sin Dex, Carver Hale etc and tell me which you prefer.

15 February, 2002, 06:10:43 PM
Ok peeps, as it is quiet....I must admit I didn't get Storming Heaven at all.

Completely went over my head.

A few questions:

Who exactly was Caliban?
How did he become bad?
How did he get trapped in the other universe?
Who was this child inside Amy?

And most important of all, could someone explain the final two parts to me, cos I ain't got a clue what it was about!

General / this week's prog
12 February, 2002, 04:40:45 AM
Saw it in the mag section here.

It seems to have only 4 stories. Is one of them extra long?

Or does something else fill up 5 or 6 pages?

General / MILO, LOGAN ETC YOU OWE ME A BIG APOLOGY!
11 February, 2002, 02:10:48 AM
According to SFX magazine in 1995 -

This is actual word for word from an interview with Dredd producer Cahrles Lippincott:

Why weren't Wagner And Garnt involved in the Dredd film?

Lippincott:
"Well at first IPC asked me to stay away from Wagner but later that relaxed a bit, and we talked to John and Alan Grant. The thing was, Alan had it in his mind that they should be paid for pitching their script online - which isn't done in Hollywood unless you're an incredibally famous writer - and it never worked out."

If what Lippincott says is true, I was right and you lot are wrong. See my earlier thread stuff. You don't get paid for treatments just like that.

I may act stupid here but I am not. And if you think I am making this up, email me at scojo@onetel.net.uk and I will scan and email you this interview.

General / Dear Rebellion,
10 February, 2002, 11:53:09 PM
With respect to Jason K and the rest at Rebellion and Shoreline,

I really do think these Dredd films are starting off on dodgy ground.

First Shoreline post descriptions on their site which are later said to be provisional and now we have the possibility of Jean Reno as Dredd.

Now Shoreline are making two Dredd Reckoning films!

Joke that.

Seriously, have faith in your vision. Don't dilute it with this idea and that. Hershey loving Dredd for example. Don't show weakness. Stay true to the concept. That brilliant idea that John Wagner created. Dredd is not Jean Reno. Even if he were great in the role, Jean Reno is not Dredd.

Hand on heart Jason, when you read Dredd in the comic, do you think he is Moroccan?

I understand that films are a business and you sometimes need names to get films made, promoted etc but please reconsider.

The are only so many times a Dredd movie can get made, so it has to be right.

General / More info on Jean Reno
10 February, 2002, 11:12:39 PM
Go to http://us.imdb.com/Name?Reno,+Jean

for more info, plus a piccy.

He is of mixed parentage. Not French but he has a very thick french accent. I have never seen him act with an american accent.

This is one reason why he is wrong to play Dredd. I assume he will either adopt an accent or be dubbed.

Surely an Americian actor is capable of playing Dredd?

According to a site: www.thisisoxfordshire.co.uk/oxfordshire/archive/2001/12/ 14/OXNEWS5ZM.html

Jason K has said Jean Reno is favourite to play Dredd.

I thought Dredd was American.

Well you are wrong scojo, he is French.

Oh right.

General / No more Killer ever!
10 February, 2002, 07:11:06 PM
I think 2k doesn't need the Killer type strips.

Sometimes I feel 2k doesn't know who it is aiming at any more.

I think we need adult(ish) strips with simple story telling. Less John Smith prose (sorry John), less sexual innuendo (sorry Robbie) and less funts (sorry Dan).

I do like Sin Dex and Dante, don't get me wrong, but I always think Wagner Grant and Mill (of old) were the best model for writers. Ya know what I mean?
Milligan of old, Alan Moore and Gerry Finlay Day were good too.

Simplicity works for 2k.

To be honest what I am really saying is...er...havent a clue.

You see I really like the idea of a vigilante type character who works for the government. A bit like Superman in the Dark Knight Returns story. But the character wouldn't have tights or fly of course. Oh yeah that was done in Zenith too. Damn!

He would wear a long coat and be moody. He would be neither good nor bad. In the middle.
I had the idea it could be called Hell's man.
Sort of an anti James Bond type charcter with a sci fi element.

Problem is I am too lazy to write it!
