Is it just me, or are the tags for things like bold and quotes not working? I think they are HTML?

All I'm seeing is the < bold > and </ bold > type web wibbery?

Help! / Computer memory configuration
11 August, 2010, 10:06:03 AM
I'm wondering if any techie chaps in the Hivemind can help with a question:-

Does the configuration of memory in a computer make a difference?

I'm NOT talking about speed, voltage etc. Rather, I'm keen to know if there is any difference between 3 x 4GB sticks as opposed to 6 x 2GB sticks. All from the same manufacturer, same speed/ latency, same voltage.

Am I right in thinking that the difference is that the 6 x 2 configuration is worse only because (a) it uses up all available memory slots (it does) and so future expansion is limited; and (b) because it will be marginally more expensive to run (as 6 sticks will be drawing power over 3) and necessitate a bigger power supply?

This is for a new computer, as mine has died. It'll be running Windows 7 64 bit edition with an i7 processor, if that makes a difference (I think there's something about i7s needing memory in multiples of 3GB?)

The difference between 6 x 2GB and 3 x 4GB is £100. I need that much memory for video editing.

This is my entry to the board's current short story competition. But, given that no one really looks at that, I thought it was only fair to let everyone see the fantastic pictures that some of the fine talents on this board kindly agreed to do for it - the theme is to do a 2000ad children's story, and I thought it would be a fine idea to have it illustrated.

Many thanks to those who kindly gave their time (and shame on those who didn't even reply to my request - boo hiss!).

I fear my words don't do the pictures justice, especially as I spent more time posting this than writing it. But I didn't want it to languish unseen.

There's plenty more exciting and groovy stories to be seen on the competition thread, and all the other ones, so go, go, go and look at them.

It also makes me wonder if there shouldn't be some kind of collaborative competition on the board, maybe for a comic strip, but I don't know if there is an appetite for that.

EDIT:

I learned a few things doing this.

1) Some folk on this board were born BEFORE Necropolis, or at least were in nappies at the time. Piss off you.
2) A shocking number of artists here haven't read The Dead Man. Go buy it!
2) Dealing with artists is like herding cats. Only by email.

[Emp edit: Splitting off first post as requested by Dr X, new post is in the short story competition post:

General / 2000ad suspected IP infringement thread
06 August, 2010, 12:48:47 PM
Given the frequency  of thse things, I wonder if we should have one place to report suspicions? I realise we may get some false positives, but maybe one place to have them is sensible and if there is no problem the report can be deleted?

And, with that, I give you:

Found 'cos I was looking for a mousepad, if any merc-droids are looking on. No mention of official licences.

Prog / Prog 1696 - Know Your Enemy
31 July, 2010, 08:31:54 AM
Really enjoyed this prog.

COVER - Nice Savage skull thing by Simon Davis. Very Rogue Trooper biochip.

DREDD - bubbles along nicely. I can't help but think there are digs at people here and I'm too much of a thickie to get them

RED SEAS - I kind of like this, but it'sa ll too confusing. I think I need to read the whole thing from scratch to follow what is going on. Bring back THARGNOTES to remind us dummies what we were told six months ago. This is the internet age, we can't remember five minutes ago.

SIN DEX - more of the same. Like Red Seas, my enjoyment of this is diminished by the time between runs - but also by the fact that there are multiple clones of the same people running around. Can't we have the goodies in white and the baddies in black, please?

SAVAGE - Best thing in the prog this week. Loved the "Unforseen consequences" line. Yep, it all goes a bit
Half Life.
STRONTIUM DOG - Blimey. Never saw that coming. Big spoiler:
Feral hasn't been rescured - Middenface and Precious are working with the authoriries.
Really big spolier:
Feral dies, burning in agony in a half-page splash
Games / Limbo and Deathshank
21 July, 2010, 08:56:18 PM
These are new to Live in the last few days.

Limbo is a kind of Braid-y type thing. I just downloaded the demo and it seems very good.

Deathshank is Diablo by Ron Gilbert, who came up with Monkey Island. Again, the demo is fun.

Popping off to Tesco to get the 1200 points (!) needed for each of them.

Just read my boys Crazy Hair by Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean. And good stuff it was too: Hewligan's Haircut for the under 5s.

Does anyone with sprogs have any good books they can recommend for a bedtime story?

Gruffalo is the supreme favourite here but judging by the reaction, Crazy Hair could be a close second.

Creative Common / Script sounds - broken glass
29 June, 2010, 10:14:39 AM
I was working on a script last night. A character gets thrown through the air by a demon into a glass screen. (Well, it could happen).

The panel description is:

BUIST smashing into the screen behind the desk. The impact is like a car crash; she is dead, a broken marionette in an explosion of glass.

There's no speech in the panel, but I think it could do with some sound effects. Thing is, I'm shockingly bad at coming up with these. "Tinkle" just doesn't cut it. "Crash" is naff. Any ideas? Or just leave the violence of the scene to the artist?

If I go with your idea you get to have a suicidal copper or a demon named after you.

Help! / Help - Iphone or Windows Mobile
18 June, 2010, 09:59:29 AM
My work is getting me a new toy. I need to decide on an iphone or Windows mobile by 1pm today!

Any help? I know the iphone can't multi-task, but that's not a problem.

I'll mostly be using it for email and calls. Not fussed about MP3 playback (I'll stick to my ipod).

Is there any real difference? The windows phone allows you to use word. Has anyone done that? Is it simple to use word on such a small device, or is that something I am likely never to use?

What about games? I know Xbox live is coming to Windows phones, but I am getting a phone in the next four weeks - any idea if that is before the roll out of Windows Mobile 7 (which is the OS for live)?

Can a mobile OS be upgraded like a PC?

I'm swithering towards a windows phone as I fancy the option of Word and Live. But if there was a Word compatible word processor app that might swing me back to the ipphone.

Any help muchly appreciated.

Re. Windows phones, any views on a deccent handset would be good too!

I've just found the button on the site that lets you see what everyone is doing. It's oddly compelling in a big brother/ creepy stalker kind of way.

It's on the home page, beside the list of active users.

Now, all together, I wonder why he's looking at that?

And what's an "unknown action" and what is happening when someone does "nothing, or nothing you can see" ?

Prog / Prog 1688 - Crunch Time
05 June, 2010, 08:44:26 AM
Great Red Seas cover. Makes you want to pick it up and see what's going on.

DREDD - Top stuff. Again. Running out of superlatives. Wonder if this is going to keep Dredd in the Cursed Earth for much longer than we might think (coming back to save the city in another epic?). As has been mentioned, I don't think the PJ in the cube is the real PJ. For one, there's no captions showing his thoughts. For two, he seems to be stuck for ideas and repeating a line he's been fed. Or is that just me?

RED SEAS - I like this  but, to be honest, it was confusing for me. Seems to jump into the middle of the story. I was struck by a couple of "Who's he/ she/ that again?" moments. This isn't helped by the double length, as there is a jarring change of scene mid-way through the episode that (I guess) would have been masked if this had been over two progs. I think a solid re-cap, or a re-read, would help. Lovely design work on the monsters, though. Very Cantina.

SAVAGE - In the words of my five year old "That tiger looks like it eats people."

ICHABOD - Adieu but not farewell. Looks like the whole thing has been a prologue! Nice change of character, nice exposition, nasty knee-capping. I can't wait for this to come back.

Prog / Prog 1687 - The Old Man and the Sea
29 May, 2010, 08:25:13 AM
Cover - Damnation Station. All very Jonah.

Dredd - Ezquerras Snr and Jnr on the art. Is this the first time they've drawn PJ Maybe? Fret not, Squaxx, as this reads like a continuation of Talented Ambrose. Right down to PJ's mis-spelled captions. Tour of Duty? Greatest. Dredd. Ever.

Past Imperfect - Hmm. Maybe I'm just jealous but I thought vampires and Nazis were too cliched for the mighty prog. Nice variation on the Nazi-hunter theme, though.

Damnation Station - And last week's tale comes to an end. On reflection, this was just a long fight. I'm betting he's not dead, though.

Savage - more of the same, really. Bunch of gangsters talking. I like my Invasion to be about Bill Savage - so the flashback to him popping off a general was nice. BTW, when did Invasion become Savage? Was it with the re-boot? I've only just noticed!

Ichabod - as good as ever. Feels like its been here for years. Finishes next week! Boo!

Letters: Steve Frame, Phillip Probert, Neil Baxter, Peter J Kelly.

All in all, another fine prog. Damnatation Station was a bit of a damp squib (damp - geddit?) and Savage could do with some more violence.

Prog / Prog 1686 - Borough Boys
22 May, 2010, 08:26:04 AM
Ohhh.

No one here, so I bags the thread. I reckon I could do this every week if I wanted, as my post comes at 7.30 and I'm up with the kids.

Anyway -

DREDD:  Top, top stuff. The plot thickens when Ambrose/ PJ
confessess to Dredd!
. Talented Ambrose finished next week, according to Tharg.

SAVAGE: Bit early to tell, as this thread is just developing. I'd love this to turn into an all out ABC Warrior battle but that ain't happening.

DAMNATION STATION: Simon Davis back on the art. Methinks the real danger is in the team and the whole alien hunting is just background. Not sure if this tale is more Moby Dick than Jaws but fun anyway. Great final splash page:
100ft toothed anus mouthed shark thing, anyone?
Double length Damnation, too.

ICHABOD: Wowsers. This gets better. Best line:
"Rest assured, were you a grossly over-weigh woman with a lack of morals and greatly diminished self-worth, I would marry you right..."
Top cliffhanger, too. A demon's word, it seems, should never be trusted.

Help! / Recommend me a free email program
21 May, 2010, 02:45:41 PM
My parents have just bought a new PC. They've got MS Office home/ student edition. It doesn't include Outlook.

Can anyone recommend a free email program? I'm assuming there is such a thing? I'm looking for something as smilar to Outlook as possible, as that is what they were using on the old machine (my dad's work PC, which he's now given up due to retirement). I want to get them something they are as familiar with as possible, but at no cost.

Thanks

Creative Common / Dialogue Question
11 May, 2010, 12:07:22 AM
I've just written a line of dialogue for a strip:

"DON'T WORRY, THESE ARE MK IIs."

Is that right? A small "s"?

Should it be "DON'T WORRY, THESE ARE Mark IIs" (ie no MK)

Or "DON'T WORRY, THESE ARE Mark 2s" (ie no MK, no II)

Which reads best? Is there any convention for this sort of thing? 'cos if there is then I don't know it.

Help! / Replacing an OAP (Old Age PC)
09 May, 2010, 10:25:38 AM
My computer is getting old (it's over six years old). As with all things, it's going wrong as it reaches the end of its life. I can live with the occasional freeze. I don't really object to the sudden roar as the fans kick into overdrive for no obvious reason. The sudden loss of signal to the monitor for a few seconds, well that's just a quirk.

But the last straw was losing three word docs that I thought I had saved.

Anyway, I know this crops up from time to time, but is the kind of thing where preceived wisdom changes so I'm starting a new thread.

I've got £500 to spend on a new PC. If it was really, really worth it I could probably spend up to £1000 but then I'd be on beans and toast for a month.

I want one that will be able to play Diablo 3 next year.

Is that possible? What should I do? What should I buy? Any thoughts or advice?

Buy a cheaper one now and again in 2 years?

Any good makes or models? I'd prefer a de4sktop as I have a monitor etc.

No Macs - wanna play games too!

Creative Common / Are you a perv?
08 May, 2010, 09:29:45 AM
I've written a script for the Mark Millar/ Clint submissions thread over on Millarworld. I'm looking for someone to illustrate it.

Thing is it's a little... risqué. It's not obscence. It has a story and a twist and robots and aliens and everything, but it does feature nudity. Enough to make Kev "I wanna draw boobs" Levell think twice.

I thought about shelving it, but given the success of "Planet PeePee" I think it might be worth a go. I've tamed it down a little since I first did it, to make it more Tesco-friendly, but there's no getting away from it: there's scuddy bits.

Now, I know a lot of artist types here are already busy. But if anyone is willing to look at this, then PM me.

Ta.

Oh, and in case you're wondering: Yes. Yes, you are.
