Wonder if the board can help. I don't have an MP3 player and am looking to get one. What I want is one that allows you to change user, so that it can be used by the wife and I (we have different tastes in music - well, I'm the only one with taste*, but you get the point).

Is this possible? I'd like it if I could choose from folders containing only my stuff and vice versa.

The price isn't really an issue, as if there isn't one that does this then I'll end up buying two. We don't have enough music to warrant that.

* The last album she listend to was The Venga Boys (remember them?). On Saturday.

General / The End of the Whole Damn Thing (SinDex)

So, with all the bru-ha-ha about Origins, what think you of SinDex's future? Is it going to go out with a bang? Should it? Could we look back on Dex's death as a Johnny Alpha moment?

I always liked Sinister Dexter, and thought it was a good format for a series of stories - very similar in structure to Strontium Dogs (replace bounty hunting with assasination) but totally different in tone.

Even now I think it could continue in some shape, but I think the Malone thing is a set up for a final Scarface type bloodbath. I'd like to see that too, mind, but I'd prefer the story to go on rather than end.

Then again, 2K has always been unafraid to kill off a character or story.

So, what do you think is going to happen?

SPECULATIVE SPOLIERS AHEAD

OK, so we're only two episodes in but - even so - I fear the worst.

It suddenly dawned on me that Origins is going to be the bastard child of the Cursed Earth and the Judge Child. What we're going to have is a collection of mini-stories as the party travel through the Cursed Earth (just like another epic, can't remember its name). The first one is here already - save the baby!

Each will be two or three episodes long and contribute nothing to the history of Dredd - they could, in fact, be from any Cursed Earth story. They will then be combined with a (say) six or seven part set of flashbacks and a quick finish.

Oh, and the finish - suprise, suprise, Fargo is alive/ cyrogenically frozen but he was a bad egg and the whole Justice Department is built on a sham. Dredd, therefore, kills him and all who know of him. That was his mission from the start and the money in the van just a means of reaching Fargo - his death ensures the continuation of the Justice Deptartmet and the ends justify the means. A shock ending, taken straight from the Judge Child quest.

Yes, I am trying to be controvesial - but that doesn't mean there isn't a grain of truth in what I am saying. I really hope the story is a continious one off, like the Apocalypse War, rather than whole lot of minor meaningless sketches. I hope we'd be treated a bit better than that.

No, no one has it as their specialist subject. But - if they did, waht would the questions be?

Usual rules apply, ie only ask after you get the right answer.

Make 'em hard, and no cheating!

For starters:

What was the name of the host of "Sob Story"?

General / A man walks into a bar...
12 September, 2006, 02:12:25 AM
What a day! Just got Moore's Future Shocks - on top of Origins starting, I've got an evening's quality rading ahead of me.

Anyway, thinking of future shocks - I'm trying to locate an old Future Shock. Don't know who wrote it or drew it, but I reckon it was in a mid-80s special. All I remember is the plot...

A man is in a bar, drinking heavily and looking to become paralytic. Someone - another drinker or the barman - asks why. It turns out the man worked for the Galactic Bank, whose slogan was something like "We'll look after anything". A wasp-alien comes in and asks to deposit its eggs - in the man's brain because the human brain is the best food for them. He is upset about this (natch) and declines, but the wasp argues he has to accept becasue the bank takes anything. He runs off and is stopped by bank security who force him to take the eggs. ANyway, he then learns that he was chosen because he is a clean living guy - drink damages the new-born wasps intelligence. So, he sets off to spend the last few weeks of his live getting rat arsed.

Any idea what it is? It's one of the few Future Shocks that have stayed with me (the main other one being Chronocops).

I hope it isn't a Moore one because I'll feel a bit of a tit if I read it later on tonight.

General / Their lust was such...

...that they forgot how to punctuate!

It's " womens' ". Possessive apostrophe after the 's' when the noun is plural.

(I talking about this week's cover).

Tut tut, Tharg. Still, in this day and age we're lucky there was an apostrophe at all. Standards are obviously falling in Betelguesian schools too.

Sorry for the dodgy title but, seriously, why is he limited to covers?

Does he have a Jock-stlye contract somewhere else? Is he in semi-retirement (don't know how old he is)?

I think his stuff is brill. So, why isn't he inside the prog?

General / Origins in SFX
30 August, 2006, 04:42:42 PM
Nice bit of publicity in this month's SFX for Origins. Some quotes from Wagner on why it's being done now, a brief history and a panel on the droids favourite Dredds (Mr Mills chooses one of his own - the original revenge of Rico).

There's also a free book of short stories (Self-pimp: mine only made the top 50, damn!)

I hope someone here can help. I'm a bit daft when it comes to finding stuff on the net, yet I volunteered to get a download of the "Mr & Mrs" theme tune for my wife. She wants it for her sister's hen weekend; they are going to video her fiance being asked questions and then get her to do the answers (with there being an obvious drinking forfeit for getting a wrong answer).

Anyway, she wants the music to play on the video.

Can anyone help, or - assuming you don't have it in your ipod - can you point me in the right direction to find this stuff? I have never downloaded music from the net and don't own an ipod.

Ta in advance.

Inspired by the earlier thread, I feel compelled to post this marvelous three lines from the bottom of an other wise useless email (although it is good to know that "It is common to have some problems with erecxtion")

Any, here it is - the angst ridden sci-fi epic of a lost soul:

imperative. I need some help, some transportation.
All contact with the planet is forbidden.
I just changed the rules. You yourself told me that you are heading

Who is this brave warrior? Where is he? What cruel alien beings create "the rules" then change them as part of their evil whim? Who spoke to him? Where are they heading? Why was he abandoned?

Three lines of broken English and it's better than some NuWho plotlines!

OK, so comics might not be seen as the coolest thing on Earth, and hanging around a comic forum like a bad smell exacerbates the position. Even so, that doesn't stop us laughing at those even worse than us.

So, inspired by the Q Magazine survey this month (the top 50 uncool songs you really like - ELO being #1), what song do you like that'll just make the boarders laugh?

I'll confess first - The Power of Love (Jennifer Rush).

I'm listening to it on the Deluxe Top Gun soundtrack as I type.

Just got a new PC and, as this site wasn't in my favourites, I googled for it. The results were suprising.

2000ad

Searching for "2000ad", it wasn't on the first page of results at all! This was true for both a web-wide and a UK TLD search. (2000ad Review was number one on both)

2000ad online

Searching for "2000ad online" threw up a prog rating page for Prog 605 as the second or third item on a web search, but not the home page of the site. On a UK only search, the best you get is 2000adshop.com.

If a long lost squaxx was to search for the comic, he might be left thinking it was no more. And new ones might wonder if the Prog really is the Galaxy's Greatest comic when they can't even find its earthly website.

Given the recent chat about the importance of advertising, surely the main site can do better? I mean, it's ranked below a PJ Holden blog for gawd's sake!

...being called at 2pm and told to work all Friday night, all Saturday and all Sunday is shit. (Quote: "Maybe finish at 4 and get some sleep so we can start at 9 in the morning").

The fact my clients are up with me is the only silver lining.

Anyone else got a crummy aspect to their job they want to share? Or facing the prospect of working 60 hours in three days?

From today's IMDb
---------------------------
Filmmaker Challenges Critics to All-Out Brawl

German horror director Uwe Boll is so fed up with receiving bad reviews from movie critics he is challenging his detractors to a filmed fight. Boll, whose movies Alone In The Dark and House Of The Dead are based on video games, says he will fly his critics to meet him and will then fight them in a boxing ring. The filmmaker is incensed by an online petition which has 13,327 signatures of people asking him to stop making movies. Boll, who has also invited Roger Avary and Quentin Tarantino to join his fight, plans to air the fights on the internet. He the plans to edit clips into his latest film Postal. Boll says, "I'm fed up with people slamming my films without seeing them. Many journalists make value judgments on my films based on the opinions of one or two thousand internet voices. Half of those opinions come from people who've never watched my films. If critics want to bring Uwe Boll down, here is their chance to physically bring him down and have the entire world watch them do it."

On our hols, Mrs X and I were talking about short stories. She mentioned that when she was about 10 (so, 20 years ago) she had a collection of horror short stories in a paperback. I'd like to find a copy of it again to give her as a present. Thing is, all she can remember is:-

It was a thin-ish paperback.
With a mainly black cover and yellow writing.
And a cover picture of a woman spread-eagled before a devouring giant slug.

Any ideas?

Just back from my hols. I noticed the message board tab was gone from the homepage and there was a poll about it, and there's a big thread about why no one likes the board (I do, it's the only one I use). Did something happen? If I'm opening Pandora's box then please ignore this post (but, hey, someone email me and tell me what happened).

Off Topic / Annual Thrill-Buffer Battering
01 June, 2006, 03:37:52 PM
I am off on holiday for two weeks this Saturday. Going to Jersey. And, after two weeks of early mornings with the baby and no blackout curtains, I'm already looking forward to coming back to my pile of subs.

Unlike other pure excitements from my childhood (like anticipating Christmas or a birthday) the joy at sitting down to a fortnights accumulated thrill power gives me the same feeling now as it did when I was eight.

Of course, there are well documented problems with taking on too much 2K in one sitting. The old thrill buffers aren't what they used to be, and it could be too much. So, if you don't hear from me in a fortnight call Tharg - there's a Squaxx in Glasgow suffering thrill power overload!
