Films very rarely get chance to flesh out the story in as much details as I would like.  I did think that the LOTR films did a very good job of portraying the books though.

I would be surprised if the new Bond franchise doesn't go for an overall 3 movie arc as per many movies these days (Bourne, etc.).  I quite like the tile, but 007 would have been better.
