I'm not arguing against diversity here, but a mostly white male Justice Department makes sense in universe. Just look at the current American police forces. These organisations have never been paragons of progressive values

Interesting police representation numbers here, albeit from seven years ago:

Extrapolating from 2015 and presuming a slowly improving make up of the police force (by which I mean moving towards an ethnic make up more similar to the communities their stations are resident in) you get a much more representative department or even certain sectors where the local sector house is overwhelmingly minority by the time MC1 becomes a reality.

Today's Baltimore, which is MC1's sector 35 (I'm using this for reference https://forums.2000ad.com/index.php?topic=40120.90) could/should be majority black.

But then again Judges move around, or are reassigned all the time so the numbers would even themselves out in aggregate.

Either way, definitely more minority judges needed on the pages.

Seems to always display USD outside of the UK (and Ireland?).

I'm in the Middle East and everything has always been dollar-denominated

In the world of prose I read Stephen King's Richard Bachman's The Long Walk for the first time, courtesy of enthusiastic discussion on this very thread. I think it's the most purely horrific thing he's ever written, it consumed my dreams for over a week, and not in a good way (but also in a good way, because that's what I look for in horror). It may be the best thing I've ever read by him, not least for balancing complete nihilism with the qualities of an extended parable.  Safe to say the sexual politics are of their day, but beyond that the humanity is extraordinary.

I read this something like 20 years ago and it's stayed with me ever since. I'm not much of a fan of long form King (and his novels do tend towards the very very looooong) but his high concept shorts: Word Processor of the Gods; Mrs Todd's Shortcut; The Reaper's Image; The Night Flier etc are almost all superb. The majority would make fine Future Shocks.

But The Long Walk. Oh Boy, what a story. A hundred young men start walking South from the Canadian border, the first 99 to stop are killed. The winner can name ANYTHING as their prize.

Lovely character portraits throughout - one lad carries 99 pennies in his right trouser pocket and transfers one to his left for every dead competitor; the nailed-on-cert-to-win
who catches cold and gradually slows down until...
. And then there's that final paragraph. Enough to make a man stop in his tracks.

Of all the Bachmann books this is often overshadowed by Rage and The Running Man but it's by far the best the five.

The song makes an appearance in Independence Day, not quite a zombie flick but apocalyptic for sure.

Could that be what she is thinking of?

yep, close for me too, so let me totally nullify Rogue Judge's vote

Harrison is probably THE definitive Durham Red artist (apologies Carlos) but the breadth of Ron Smith's output is hard to beat: Otto Sump; Chopper; Reverend Flatface; Faro; The Galactic Salesman; Captain Skank.

I mean, come on.

Quote from: Leigh S on 05 May, 2021, 09:13:34 AMCopper just confesses and despite them pretty much knowing there's a wider conspiracy, they aren't going to do anything to get the real story?

Not even difficult to start the investigation. All they need to do is requisition SJS internal comm recordings (I'm looking at you, Roffman) for the three or four days prior to the showdown and they get Copper involving Kerubo over the radio and Kerubo delivering the line 'Okay people, we have a welcome wagon op rapidly going south on us...'

Plus you have the syringe the rookie is taking to the lab....all of which makes me think this is just the beginning of a wider 'something rotten in the state of SJS HQ' story.

I suppose I see it more that Dredd-under-the-helmet is unfamiliar to citizens because he's always in uniform, indeed he is the uniform. He's on duty 23hrs 50min a day, every day, and so he wears the helmet. It's not like he consciously hides his face, or that it's a state secret.

This is also a nice way to explain "So THAT'S what he looks like." from the Sov Judge when Dredd's helmet is removed after he shoots Chief Judge Griffin, then turns the gun on himself.
