News / Hey, it's Matt the Harpy
17 December, 2001, 11:53:03 PM
No, the screeching of the harpies as they land on my back once more!  I honestly thought you had got that out of your system.  is this going to happen all the time?

2000AD isn't a charity and I've no proof that rebellion are going to improve it as they claim though I hope they will and the signs are certainly positive.

During my time in the wasteland, I have been buying collected volumes of stuff I like (or liked) and Dredd volumes by wagner (I have over a metre high pile of reprinted 2000AD stuff I've bought - I pay for quality).  I will buy Prog 2002 because it has at least 2 stories (that's all I ask) I want to read in it.  Just as I bought Prog 2000, 2001 and every issue for the last few years with nemesis and abc warriors in.

If I hadn't made my trips down to whsmiths I wouldn't have bought any of these issues.  As it happens now this site is here I don't even have to go down to whsmith's, I just look to see if there is a new strip or the return of one of my favourites.  So you don't have to worry about paying for a mag full of rubbish while other people read a six page dredd strip for free anymore.

Back you foul harpy, back I tell you!

News / Re: Survey Results: Zenith Suckers...

Seems to be a consensus that the last book was good, hurrah!  I might have to pester titan to release it.  I was surprised to hear about it being in colour though.

The thing is with zzzenith.com is that it's hard to have much depth in six pages.  So while it might be quite good for a one off, most people are really after something of the same depth as the series.  Hence the dissapointment.  It was like seeing a trailer to a movie, it got you interested but wasn't satisfying in itself.

As I commented further down the list, the whole Britney thing was pretty appalling.  Morrison has a habit of 'doing things' to people he doesn't like in his strips.  I'd rather he just got on with the story.

I thought Steve Yeowell was back on form.

What do you think of it?  If it ties up all the loose ends then I think I'll buy it when Titan reprint it (if they do) anyway.

That's a very good point.

Wanting a series back is a double edged sword, it may either be outright bad (bad robohunter) or just okay, which is almost just as bad.

If it is just okay it may mean that the story has gone as far as it can go or even that it's now just a little anachronistic.

I would love Halo Jones back for a fourth series.  But then, I also maybe wouldn't.  Moore and Gibson are still brilliant but what if it just didn't work?  It would cast a pall over all the previous stuff.

Still if Morrison could do produce a tightly written story and Stev Yeowll could reach the same detailed level he did in the first book I'd happily see it back.  If it just was to sit at the bottom of what has so far been a downward curve, I'd rather they didn't bother.

I think the first series of Zenith was one of THE best things ever in 2000AD, the second series was merely okay, the third series increasingly disjointed and with regret i've never read the last series.  zzzenith.com was quite interesting (i don't think you can expect much from a one off six page strip) but Morrison writing the whole Britney assualt thing made want to be sick, much like his b*ggery of Dan Dare which seemed to be his attempt to violate things he didn't approve of, pretty sick if you ask me.  The thought of a fifth series isn't neccesarily a pretty one.

But that first series was very, very good.

I finally got Durham Red, the only figure i hadn't bought at full price.  At the store they had at least one of each figure so you can get them all (not including limited edition stuff).

Sorry, didn't see the thread at 219 saying exactly the same thing.  Second time I've done this.

Damn me!

Yeah, no Slaine up here, no Durham Red or Andersons either.  Have seen one Dredd and several Death/Johhny Alpha's.  I'll let you know if I have seen a slaine, but it could be that no-one has them.  Oh well.

General / Judge Dredd figures ?1.89 each
17 December, 2001, 08:50:03 PM
Bloody hell.  Having paid about ?50 for five figures I have no seen them in a cheapo pound store for ?1.89 each.  How sick do I feel?  Anyway the figures you can get seem to be Strontium Dog, Death and Dredd.  They didn't even have Durham Red which was the only one I hadn't bought.

Anyway I got them from a cheapo shop called The More Store, I'm up in the North East (Wae Aye etc.)if any of you good folk want to get some.  I thought I'd better post it so some fans might get the chance to by them before some opportunistic git clears them out.

They were really pretty cool (with paint jobs varying somewhat) and I was very dissapointed to hear Wake say that they weren't making any more.  I was looking forward to that Dredd on Lawmaster too.

:o

Ha, ha, very sorry, that wasn't a purposeful dig, I remebered the comment but not the name of the poster and certainly didn't think it was you.

Fortunately i forget the stories i don't like (at least I don't forget I disliked them or I would end up buying them again).  Zippy couriers had a cat, and she was obviously a courier and she also had dark long wavey hair.  Was she some sort of space courier?  Er... no, it's gone.

Oh well, it's nice to know someone enjoyed the stories I didn't :)

All the best

The only ones on your list I've read are Red Razors, Devyln Waugh, some Garth Ennis Dredds, Indigo Prime and Tyranny Rex (The last two are the only two books I have from that list.

Tyranny Rex was okay, I wish it had had more of a regular series to get going properly.  It always used to start off a new story being a different strip. I think the author was trying to get a Halo Jones style mythos built up (although the character and stories were entirely original).  I can't remember, was she born with the tail?

Sometimes these things make a better read when collected in a volume and read in a sitting. I have a habit of buying collected 2000AD strips I never even liked (Like my Nikolai Dante Book) if I see them cheap enough.  Sometimes I get a pleasant surprise.

I think your point is right though, I'm sure most strips have their fans and critics (who are usually more vocal anyway).  There was even some guy who said he liked Zippy Couriers, I think he's mad, but it doesn't really bother me, it wouldn't bother me if they published a book, made a film etc, as long as I didn't have to read it :)

Where I would get annoyed would be where strips I like are changed or altered.  Like Robo-Hunter (I'm trying to get that into every post).

Personally i didn't like red Razors, along with Armitage it completely ruined my image of East Meg and Brit Cit repsectively.  I wasn't keen on the character who was very ambiguous and the story wasn't much cop either.

However i'm sure there must be a few fans out there and if Titan can make some money of it I think that's a good thing, that way they can afford to reprint HARRY TWENTY!  As long as there is something in there for me I can live with stuff I don't like.  I have had word that they are going to be reprinting Strontium Dog!  Ye-bloody-ha!  At last I can have my Stront in lovely paperback.

I doth swear to buy it, by Almighty Grud!

That will be my first laying on of the wallet since ABC warriors.

News / Wednesday 19th eh? Calm... Calm... Calm...
16 December, 2001, 08:25:30 PM
Oh well, I don't mind waiting if it isn't out, it was just the thought of it being on a shelf and not being able to read it and...

I'm all worked up now, looks like I'll have to go out and shoot someone to get it out of my system.

Thanks for your messages of sympathy in this difficult time.

News / Is Prog 2002 out yet!?! I need thrill power!
16 December, 2001, 07:30:05 PM
The site says 12th of December, but it's the 16th and I haven't seen it anywhere, not even in Whsmith's.  I want to read some Bad Company so much it hurts, ooh, ow, etc.

Could someone tell me if they've got a copy (don't tell me what happens in the stories!)?  If they have I may go on some sort of bizarre quest this afternoon.
