Books & Comics / Re: Your ideal local comic/game shop.

Hi Dave

Well, that's one of the things on my lottery checklist, so good for you!

I would say in the words of Sir Humphrey Appleby, that's 'very courageous' of you.  I've had friends do the same thing and it's tough going, I even attempted an internet business some years ago, and optimism is soon replaced by tough unblinking reality.

I'd say, have a modern airy look, keep it looking good and not a dank cavern.

Sell whatever sells, don't turn your nose up at anything new or fangled and stick with what you think is great, just sell it!

Have a good accesible internet ordering site that uses paypal and credit card.  Keep it updated.

Have discounts off new stuff to stop people sloping off to the internet.

Be aware that many RPG's and boardgames have a short shelf life, keep the stock fresh and sell off at cost (or just above) anything that's had its day.

Erm, if I think of anything else I'll chime in, feel free to ignore me.

Have a game night where people can come along and play a new game, you may well sell copies off the back of it.

The very best of luck, Dave.

Film & TV / Re: Dexter - Worth a punt?

Yes, Dexter is a little slice of TV Heaven, it's fun, warm, clever, with good characters and writing.  Not bad for a program about serial killers...

Death of Grass is a very good book, a very scary book too as it all seems so plausible.

Just wondering... should we create a list of board reccomended books?  Not just books we like, but books we think are stone cold SF classics.

We could rate them 1 point for each person reccomending them.   Not entirely pointless as then we could build up a good list of books for us to enjoy.  You'd just add a point to any you reccomend as well as any new books.  Just copy , paste and modify the list on your thread.

Pretty much anything by Philip K. Dick-Counter Clockworld, We Can Build You, Time Out Of Joint, if you want some of his more accessible work. Alfred Bester's, The Stars My Destination,   if you want something meaty. classic, .  is also a damn good read.
Check out the rest of SF Masterworks series for some classic SF novels.

Doing something very similar, mostly due to this forum getting me to read Alfred Bester. Just finished off Day of the Triffids, the plot points of which I found suprising (just expected the Triffids), and a few Philip K. Dick books.

Currently reading Left Hand of Darkness and am enjoying that.

I am presently reading Anne Robinson's autobiography ahead of an impending Weakest link appearance, although I'm not sure that qualifies.

Two obvious ones that I've read more than once are 'The Day of the Triffids' and 'I am Legend'. Both paint a bleak and imaginable post apocalyptic world, and always offer something new. If you have a short attention span Wyndham's 'The Seeds of Time' is a cracking book of short stories all of which would make great, if slightly long, Future Shocks.

It's been a while since I've read anything, but I've had a quest for a few years to catch up on all those classic SF books that I've never read.  I've just finished Dune, which I really enjoyed (and it made some sense out of the films/TV shows), though I won't be bothering with all the sequals.

Anyone else got some all time classics they'd suggest, or a link to a good list of books?

Cheers

I was a big fan of this strange pervy book, Trout.  Always regretted lending my copy out!

Classifieds / E-Bay Away Day
24 July, 2008, 12:46:14 AM
Hi all, going to hopefully have some long months of getting rid of a lot of comics and RPG/games stuff over the next month or two.  If you're interested in either, please add me as a favourite seller.  Got rid of some of my comics, I still have my megs and 2000AD's 521-present to get rid of, not sure how to go about it, but if you're in the North East you can collect.

Just one comment and that's on the Son of Fink story.

I did groan when I saw last months cover, fearing the worst.  But John Wagner continues to surprise.

And having read it... it's just horrible, really nasty stuff. This material surely has to be as dark as the comic can handle. It's on a par with moments of History of Violence and it makes for a very uncomfortable read.  But then, anyone else writing and I'd have stopped reading by now!

The one thing I'd dearly like to see is...
That it seems Fink Angel isn't so dead after all, and returns to kill this horrible little bastard as soon as possible.

Maybe the dates of his birth would back me up...
Monarch, I couldn't have been more tongue in cheek with that last post without doing myself a cheek and tongue-related injury, so thought I could do without a  ;)  but apologies if you felt I was trying to wind you up.

I did apolgise PJ, and the same to Al before he gets out his hyper-kinetic knacking stick.  But I have to say, two strips called Dead 'Something' at the same time.  It's a farce, complete ripping off of the Dead Man, with the whole 'dead' thing and there was man in it.  I think.  Hang your sorry heads in shame.

Now I'm sure many people have enjoyed The Vort, and will enjoy the twist and good for them.
But I for one find it hard to credit that the same second hand trick has been allowed to be pulled off three times on 2000AD readers in the last two years.  Malone, Dead Signal and now The Vort.  When Wagner did it back in the 80's with the Dead Man it was a stroke of genius where you realised one story is part of a bigger one, after all, it had the same settiong, the clues were all there.  Twenty years later, we have random stories building up to the revelation they are actually something else... and that's it.  I just doubt the writers motives.  I had honestly thought there might be some point to Malone... I was wrong.  I didn't get to the end of Dead Signal because of the bad vibes, and I didn't even read The Vort as I was just waiting to see what the scam was to see if it was worth my effort or if I'd just feel like I'd been suckered for giving it a chance.
It's not for me. Sorry.

Off Topic / Chat night anyone?

Anyone fancy organising an alternative chat night somewhere on the net?  I don't know much about these things, but I'm guessing it must be possible.  They always used to be on Wednsedays and before the board was pulled I wuz enjoying them.

Cheers

Hi Super C

I'm a big fan of Slaine and Savage Worlds, and I think I should be playing it soon with any luck.  My GM has done his own conversion, but I'll point him towards yours.  I'm planning to do a Rogue Trooper one at some point (mainly for wargaming, somethign i've wanted to do for years).  If it happens (it might not) I'll let you know.

Cheers
