Opps, it's that crinkly style.  And I also associate Jock with Tharg.  Sorry Kev, nice pic.

I thought some of the judges were disturbingly sadistic, but I suppose Dredd's behaviour is justified by the twist.

Prog / Prog 1312

Well, Scrap's finished and it had a couple of surprises before it was done.  I have enjoyed it, despite finding it incredibly depressing, and could definitely look forward to more small self contained stories (though not a Scrap 2).

Best thing about the prog however is next week's prog.  Critchlow on Dredd (so I guess it can't be the trial proper) and Red Seas look promising and then there's Asylum, which as the secret readers club hasn't met, I have no idea what to think of it, yet.

And there is an inspriing cover by Jock and we have speech bubble!  I repeat, we have speech bubble!  And all the better for it I say.  Hurrah!  Makes it all come alive for me it does.

Someone like Dylan Teague could draw a very nice Axel Pressbutton strip I think.  I'd certainly like to see a rerun of the old stories followed by a couple of new ones to see what people think.  Maybe not in AD, but perhaps in the Meg.  There aren't a huge amount of classic british characters I'd like to see turn up, but this is one of them.

Erm, well, I assume this would largely fall into two catgaories, those who want cool powers/to be cool and those who want it for deviant purposes.

I'm not sure I'd want to be any.  If I was Dredd, Mega City would be ruled by robots, if I was nemesis the universe would be ruled entirely by humans, if I was torquemada, there'd be more aliens than you can shake (what I hope) is a stick at.

If it's total fantasy (assuming the process isn't perfected due to the Gugleheim instabilities) and I could somehow pull it off with syle.  Sam Slade - Robohunter.

And yes, it would have to be wagner/grant giving me my lines and ian gibson drawing me.

yeah, they depressed me at the time.  I liked the art, I just thought it could be put to better use.

What a nightmare satch, is that the whole workforce?  For people who don't know it's a very big employer in a small town.  My grandad worked there (after he worked at the local quarry).

To be honest I find I get different things from Moore, Mills and Wagner (including wagner/grant).  They've written almost all of my favourite stuff.

Rambling horribly by the second post, if homer simpson can get away with it, I'm sure anyone can.

I agree that legally, there isn't any case to bring, or I wouldn't have mentioned it.  Because I still enjoy reading dredd, right?

But when so much emphasis is placed these days on intellectual property, it's interesting to look back on the cavalier approach of yesterday.  When you are right, there would be a cool movie and they would say 'let's rip that off', or more accurately 'let's do our own spin on that'.  Mach 1 was the bionic man, shako was Shardik (with a socio-political agenda), hookjaw was jaws (with a socio-political agenda), dredd was dirty harry made to look like a fucking pirate.

I'm not hugely convinced by the no new ideas theory. But when they do appear, they are often raided, exploited and eventually meet their doom in a crossover :)

I'm not knocking early dredd (apart from commenting on what was knicked - the Omega Man episode was good, the Uggy gang was just planet of the apes transplanted into mega city, when I first read them i thought they were all original ideas) I'm just saying that such stories would never appear in AD today.

General / Nolan's Gun
03 October, 2002, 06:31:24 AM
People may not be interested, but Judge Dredd has wielded his stolen technology for 25 years.  The gun that fires six types of bullet and is palm printed to the users ID was never Judge Dredd's but actually belonged to Logan (and not the board logan either).  I knew previously about the six types of bullet, but only recently found out that the same gun had 'pore printing' too.

As I'm working my way through the complete Dredd's, I've noticed a few things from early Dredd's that are basically plain bloody thievery.  Does that bother people or is it just fair game?  I suspect it's just times have changed.

Personally I'm not that bothered, an original arrangement of existing ideas (nowadays it's just a rehash of existing comics which is worse), counts for a lot of fiction and Judge Dredd definitely has it's own identity.

Then again, part of me is pretty dissapointed that some of the stuff I thought as so great when I was younger, had already been great in a previous incarnation.

Also and completely unrelated, has anyone noticed that all the Dredd early epics could be examples of how not to write for 2000AD nowadays?

Incidentally does anyone remember a cinema ad, posibly from late eighties early nineties, that was practically judge dredd?  It was some sort of conretto (mega-cone?) advert and the words 'mega' would be repeated endlessly as a pseudo judge stomped about.

And of course Dredd was ripped off again for the Laser Quest, laser battling game.

Mat, I can't even bring myself to paint over the rust.  And a LawVWPolo isn't the latest in perp busting tech.

To be honest, I'll just file that in my things I'll do when I win the lottery file.  i.e. forget about it.

I always wonder if Anthrax had any permission to trace pictures of Dredd, I have an anthrax poster and a patch featuring dredd.  I suppose like the carnival ride it's all free publicity.

Now is that cool or what?  Surely there must be pictures of this?

When I was fifteen I promised myself when i got a car I'd paint it in Judges colours like a lawmaster.  How I've betrayed myself :)

Well, Chopper has been taken, though in truth that's only when it had been passed over to Ennis to play with.

So I'll choose Judge Anderson.  And it happened with the wolf story (no spoilers here), I've just read that and Helios again and it's definitely that point.

It's not badly written, there's a lot I like about this strip (it's the halfway house where I sort of like it, sort of don't) I still like Alan Grant and his writing, it just starts to become a different strip, more mature even.  And I don't mean that in the tits and swearing sense.  I read this when I was starting to feel a little uneasy about 2000AD, sometime after 520 I think.

It just a really dark strip, followed by Helios which is darker, and then it's into Ransom country and I'm lost without a map.  Not really the mega city I know or the character I knew.  Alan Grant's happy with the strip, and he likes the look of Ransom I know.  And so do many others, and even though I can't argue that it's wrong, it's not for me.  I've read Triad, Shmaballa, Satan (nice bit with Dredd at the end, but that's all for me) and some other bits and pieces.

I like to see her turn up in the odd Wagner Dredd as she seems to have a bit of a pschizophrenic personality ;) And I certainly wouldn't want to see her killed off (like that's gonna happen dudes, are you in a coma or what?!)
