Durham Red - Ezquerra.  I consider the later strip to be a different character (as it would have been but for that continuous lazy creative streak that ran through 90's 2000AD)

Anderson - Bolland (though I liked the Ewins version).  I feel bolland did the iconic versions of Dredd, Anderson and the Dark Judges.  Arguably the most potent images in Dredd and subsequently used/imitated for much of the merchandise that has followed for that very reason.  There was a reason they stuck that Bolland Dredd on the back of those titan books.

ABC Warriors - Mike McMahon.  Say ABC Warriors and I just see Mongrol shooting his mouth off against the Volgs in that double splash page.  I can almost hear the sounds and the smell of foul Volgan blood.  Kill!  Kill!  Kill!

Tricky, but I know what i think.

Brian Bolland produced the definitive image of Dredd.  Carlos Created him, Mike McMahon developed him, ron smith did great humorous work.  I love them all.

Cam Kennedy/Dave Gibbons for Rogue Trooper - I just can't do this one too difficult.  Maybe Dave Gibbons just for the defining rogue, maybe.  No, I can't do it!  Like Wilson and Ewins too of course

Glenn Fabry for Slaine, I love McMahon's version and think Bisley was an interesting experiment, perhaps if he'd finished the horned god he might have done better.  Also Bisley's legacy was terrible to behold.  Fucking terrible.

Damn you to hell Mr Whit, that'sa tricky one.

Cam kennedy!

I had to bow out of the chat, though I can't remember what time.  I often let it time itself out, which it does after 2 (TWO) hours.  as I don't have the willpower to leave myself.

Cheers

No, I got you Blackblood, I wouldn't want just the electronic version that denied paper fans their joy.

After talking to someone about it I've been told that a DVD isn't the best idea as a TV only has 500 lines, not good enough for resolution.  Looks like a PDF or browsable HTML would be the digital way to go.  Oh well.

It's apparently a 65 strong computer company.  I'm sure they could get the tea boy to do a mock up using the scanned progs and maybe give it away with a megazine.  Obviously DVD's are a bit more expensive than CD's buy some mags give them away (okay, higher circulation ones) but you could maybe do it as a video CD as an experiment.

What you want is something browsable by Page, like flipping the comic pages over in a prog.  Ideally as a DVD so you can see it at a decent size on your telly.  An option to flick through the panels, one by one, each blown up to fill the screen.  An ability to browse say Rogue Trooper from issue to issue, without reading anything else inbetween.  Sell them in batches of 50 progs.

You could even have interviews, record commentaries, you could even get Big Finish to do some audio tracks for them, with actors voices and sound effects.  Not every story, but some of the Dredds and other great stories.

I know it seems weird, positively unnormal to most comic fans, but the atomic wars start in just under seventy years, and I'm not sure my progs will survive.

I'm sure many fans would like paper copies and dvd copies.  let's face it, there's nothing like sitting down with a mug of bourbon in your favourite chair reading yer comics.  but you could also take the dvd anywhere with a dvd player.  Portable progs.  You could leave all them in your mum's attic, and still have all your progs to hand in you london matchbox.

I could go on, but I want you on my side :)

Cheers

Yes, but in the modern age, not everyone can lug around 4 tea chests full of comics.  As it would cost virtually bot all (that's my fiscal assessment) it would make sense.

As I sadi before, if you make them DVD's, capable of being browsed on a TV, then the format should be as valid as many of the millions of other CD based media currently out there.  I have a dvd player which can play CD's and DVD's and it will be around for a while.

If it's made obsolete?

Kerching!

Sell it again.

Paper for those who want it, but DVD would quite frankly be bloody fantastic.

Back in the enlisted men's barracks:

'Who is that man?'

'That's Watkins Sir, not pretty is it?  He's lost one current eye and they've bitten his arm off at the shoulder'

'Damn them.  Fetch Dr Kipling, quick man, we can still save him!'

'But sir, Dr Kipling, he only worked with cakes in civvy life didn't he?'

'Yes, but there's a war on damnit, he'll have to do his best, we all have to.'

'Yes sir.  I... I hear he is exceedingly good...'

'Let's hope it's enough, let's hope it's enough.'

Perhaps it has a sudden popularity and is sold out?!  The article is the main reason I'm getting it.  Curious to see what the mag's like now after a ten year break.  Anyway The Watcher raved about the article, so I feel I must.

"What is it Private Weasley"

"It's Watkins sir, they caught him trying to escape dressed as a Pretzel Officer.  They're torturing him now sir.  I hear... I hear he's lost a currant sir."

"By gad, the fiends!"

That makes sense, I used to have that too.  At least it means you don't waste your weekends asleep.

"Old Captain 'Nobbler' Harris says the mission is a piece of cake leiutenant!"

"I say sah, that really takes the biscuit, what?"

You could have bought a load of gingerbread men and played escape from colditz under the duvet.

I do want to buy the megazine, but I can't find a copy.

I agree with that space idea.  Stick some triia in at the very least.

Why are you up so early Mr Whit?

I am far from being a FanGirl.  Probably I could go along with 3 and 5, I'm sure some minor brain surgey, hormone treatment and greater limb amputation could do the rest.

I hate anything with a deeper meaning.  Why not tell me your greater meaning (I'M TALKING TO YOU PAT!) then just write a violent funny comic strip.

Incidently I reckon comics would be a lot more popular if female fans did throw their pants at creators.  Like a sort of picto-literary chippendale show.

I'm off for a think and a drink

General / What Maketh a Fanboy?
09 March, 2002, 04:02:55 AM
Come on then, who can give the best dictionary definition of a fanboy?

Is it the sort of person who says 'What Maketh a Fanboy'?  Or someone else, possibly from Hackney.

What's the difference between someone who reads comics and a fanboy?  What traits and attitudes divides the two?

Or is it just an attempt to divide comic readers (universally despised and spat upon) into a further two groups, just so that people can still look at themselves in the mirror?

Rememember you are posting on a comic book message board on the internet.

Cheers!

PVS

p.s. I'm an alcoholic, I can't be a fanboy, it's mutually exclusive, I read it in New Scientist.
