General / Re: Two 'Events' teased from 2000ad

I'm very interested to see what The Citadel is, but this zombie thing sounds dreadful if it's just going to be a rehash of that Marvel Zombies stuff. What if Wolverine Dredd was a zombie LOL
Generally 2000ad are cleverer than that but the inclusion of Rogue on that image makes me fear otherwise.

Wagner / Cornwell Dredd is turning into a bit of a dream team however and that should be really good.

Black Light for me guys. Agree with Alex that the only Chimpsky's Law series we've had was the least good Chimpsky, although it looked great. Black Light on the other hand whilst being super 90s is, I think, better than it's generally bad rep, plus John M Burns.

I really liked Dan Francisco, but can't vote againts Dreadnoughts.

Shadows for me too. The setting and ending is bleak as anything.
As a young reader I couldn't abide the art. Had no idea it was Elson!

Forest at least lets you return to the start if you reach the end without both bits of the hammer, unlike the auto-death scenarios in books like Deathtrap Dungeon or Appointment with FEAR if you get to the end without everything on the 'shopping list'.
I like the idea of a book where there is no 'true path' but I assume this is to keep you trying again and again. Interesting that newer books have checkpoints of sorts - I was just talking to someone this weekend about video games having checkpoints now whereas in the 80s you die, it's back to the start. I wonder if that's influenced this idea at all.

Dexter ... Am I missing another reference with that "Some barbarian queen from a really cheesy movie" remark?

I thought this was a reference to Conan, given the pose she is in at the end, but Abnett's jokes are usually cleverer than this so maybe I missed something too.
Re-reading Dredd and there's so many little visual jokes in there. It's brilliant.

Music / Albums of the Year 2021
10 December, 2021, 02:39:46 PM
It's been another crap year but another one where working from home means I've been able to listen to and then buy loads of great records. I don't think it's been as good as last year musically when we saw a big upsurge in creativity: I think in 2021 a chunk of drive and creativity has been replaced with fatigue, but still some great records coming out.

The downside is I have been to exactly ONE gig in 2021 and I miss live music so much.

Anyway, here's my favourite albums from 2021, what were yours, squaxx?

Auspicious Atavism - Anahata
Into the Maw of Death - Grand Cadaver
Fell Sorcery Abounds - Morgul Blade
Rise of the Witch - Greywitch
Neapolitan Power Violence - Napoli Violenta
The Age of the Saucers - Hollywood Burns
Night at the Grindhouse Part II - STRNGR and Destryur
Second Winter: Live & Raw in Chicago - Throne of Iron*
The Final Feast - Send More Paramedics
Thunder Over London - Gama Bomb**

I'm torn over the new Maiden, which is techically really good and enjoyable whilst listening to it but I just can't keep any of the songs in my head once it's gone off and is waaaay too long, so it doesn't get on here.

* cheating because it's a live album, but it captures a lot of what I miss about gigs
** cheating also because it's an EP but what the hell

Film & TV / Re: Disney To Reboot Firefly.

Echo the comments of others here... can't see this working. The setting isn't what makes this, it's the characters and I'd be stunned if that particular lightning can be captured twice.
Because of it's revered status they'll likely be excessive fanservice, and I suspect what we'll end up with is what we've just seen with Cowboy Bebop where the creators make something that cheeses off both old fans and new watchers and bombs horribly.

Currently, we can't get enough of Legendary Encounters (the Alien deck building game), which accomplishes the amazing feat of telling a coherent story inside a deck-builder

I love this game for that exact reason. Each scenario is very different and actually feels very close to the films.
Have you played LE: Predator? It's not quite as good, but similar. It makes up for only two scenarios but allowing you to replay them both as a Predator which is fun but annoying when the humans kick your ass.
You can also combine the two for an AvP game, which I haven't got round to yet...

I've been playing a bit of Aliens: Bughunt which is a fun game at a low pricepoint.

I've struggled to get time to run at Citadel of Chaos the last few weeks, and with you guys posting these epic reports I feel I may have missed my chance.
Who fancies a crack at book 3:Forest of Doom between now and Christmas then? This was my first ever FF gamebook and I played it over and over I'm confident I know this well and it's got a forgiving ending, so this could be the first one we all beat.

Was a strong year end that was. I vividly remember last year one of my Progs around this time going missing in the post and being mildy distraught as I was enjoying Hookjaw and Constanta so much. Even SinDex was interesting again for a bit.

Really sad to hear about Chris Achilleos. His cover to the original MERP for Games Workshop was what drew me into what ended up being near all consuming geekdom. His 80s work for GW is just one iconic image after another for me: Ravening hordes, Talisman, Blood Royale... then you've got his Fighting Fantasy stuff, that iconic Heavy Metal image.. and even Whitesnake's infamous Lovehunter cover. So many fantastic works.

Another really great cover this week.

Dredd Great wrap up to a great story.  Everything about this was so incredibly ridiculous in a good way, from the breakdancing Grunwalder to Enormo and his Sharkbah utterance at the end. A real love letter to old school Dredds indeed. I have absolutely loved this. With Klegg off to the cubes I hope it's not the last we see of him.

The Out This episode was fantastic.

Scarlet Traces Not sure about this ending tbh. It feels both a good one and somewhat detached - it's so 'big' in it's time jump and universe-spanning nature that it leaves almost all the small elements of the series behind. I think this will benefit from an all in one read. Despite enjoying this run, I feel it ending here wouldn't be a bad thing.

Dexter Well, there were some terrifically drawn dinosaurs and such in this run, but overall this has been totally forgettable, mainly predictable and neither funny nor exciting. Real waste of the talents involved.

Another one here for Armoured Gideon

I absolutely love Night Zero and Beyond Zero, even though they're objectively not very good. A recent re-read of them showed them up to me as less good than I remember, but still voting for them here.
