General / Outlaw Nation for the Meg?
14 May, 2003, 03:48:10 AM
As a beyond 2000ad story, I rekon that Jamie Delano's Outlaw Nation would fit in well as a possibility. What's more, if it were a success, maybe Rebellion could coax Delano into writing it for them.

Previously published by DC's Vertigo imprint, this series was cut short in it's prime through lack of sales, and yet was very very well recieved by the few who did read it.

There's a review of the first issue...

General / Greatest Dredd stroy ever?
13 May, 2003, 12:37:47 AM
Want to nominate a Dredd story for the greatest Dredd tale ever?

It could be an epic or a one off, From 2000ad or the Meg, or even a one off from a Judge Dredd Annual.

Name your fave here, then, when I feel there are enough nominations I'll put the (10?) most popular up on a poll, so that everyone can vote for the ultimate Dredd tale.

According to May's Previews, Dark Horse Comics will be releasing a hardback collection of Scarlet Traces on August 20th. Running at 88 pages and retailing for $14.95

Wonder why Rebellikon didn't snap up the reprint rights to this???

Still, should make some of the ST fans happy :-)

General / Challenge The Watcher & Logan!!!
23 April, 2003, 04:46:59 AM
These two guys between them, seem to know EVERYTHING that needs to be known aout 2000AD.

So, let's put them to the test.

Challenge The Watcher and Logan to answer your 2000ad queries (if they are up for it :-)).

Watcher and Logan, are you gambling guys? Fancy your chances? How about we try this out, and if it looks like being a) fun and b) a success, we go for some prizes (for anyone who can catch you out)!!!!

Rule 1. No speculation.

Want to lay down some rules, here's your chance...

General / 2000ad, & the sense of adventure.
22 April, 2003, 04:05:14 AM
I've been thinking recently about the difference between what thrills people like, and don't like. The difference between popular "retro thrills" and new characters.

One of the key elements to the actually story is the sense of adventure. Now this may only apply to the thrills that I enjoy, but I get the feeling, that "popular" thrills, which evolve into "classic 2000ad characters" all seem to have stories which have a hugely gratifying sense of adventure (pretty much a sense of wonder, that the boys at ninth art have been discussing).

I'll try and give a few examples.

Judge Dredd: many of the most popular Dredd tales, are the mega epics. huge, spralling adventures.
Stontium Dog: Romping adventures
Nic Dante: Adventure city!
Sin/Dex: Used to have a sense of adventure, but lost it after Demi has KO'ed.

Ok, let me try this one:
The Original Rogue Trooper: Hunting the General was a major adventure.
War Machine: even this incarnation had a degree of adventure, taking the classic character, and reworking him into an enjoyable adventure tale.
Fr1day: Failed to impress adventure wise.
Tor Cyan: Ok, so this character just confussed the lineage too much, and people gave up caring.

So, Is there enough of a sense of adventure in the tales we are getting in 2000ad at the moment? I would say no, however certain new characters have been heading in that direction (ie Atavar, Dante, Shakara might be going that way).

What do you think?

Does 2000ad need an adrenaline shot?

21 April, 2003, 03:07:12 PM
Ok, in relation to buying a new scanner...

Also, I've heard of USB 2.0 will devices using this still work on USB 1.whatever? Do I need to get new USB ports (on an internal expansion card)?

Cheers again peeps :-)

Off Topic / Scanners, Thread4402 revisited
21 April, 2003, 01:39:44 AM
Well, this weekend, I decided enough was enough, and reformatted my hard drive.

I reinstalled with Windows 2000 as the operating system. After many hours putting programs back onto my hard drive, and having succesfully retained all my old emails, and email addresses, I'm feeling rather pleased with myself (although I'm still adding more and more software).

BUT, and I knew this when I installed Windows 2000, my scanner, which I bought for ?400+ when they first became available in the early 90's is so old, that good old Win 2000 won't recognise it, and Trust (who made the scanner) are no longer creadting drivers for it (although on their website, they indicated that it wouldn't even run on Win98, it worked fine for me for years without any problem).

It was a damn reliable piece of kit, and many of you have reaped it's benefits (via many of the images and online thrills available on this site).

Anyway, short of reformatting my hard disk, and reinstalling Windows 98 again, my only other option would appear to be to purchase a new scanner.

I need quality (high resolution), reliability, (quietness), speed, and a decent price. The old beauty, used to scan at A4, a larger scanner would be useful, but not necessary (anyone have one?). So, any recommendations?

Cheers

Want to discuss what has happened to Orlok?
How about we do it here?

As the title says,
I'm thinking of reformatting my hard drive.
I've already made backup copies of my email addresses, and emails.
Anybody got any other hints and tips, or run into any problems, when reformatting their own hard drives?

General / Covers- The great debate.

How important is the 2000ad cover?

The inside backpage of the current prog (1335) got me thinking about this. The picture of Dredd and Orlok, by Bolland is great, and the red background for me makes the image really striking. On a magazine shelf in a news agents, I feel that this would really stand out.

In my mind, the cover of each Prog is only really important for attracting new or casual readers. It's the first impression.

Imagine you have never read 2000ad or the meg before, and have no knowledge of any of the characters (where have you been?). Blocking all this information from your mind, look back over all the covers from 2000ad, the meg, and other spin off publications (use the cover story pages on this site-link below).

Which single cover stands out above all others to you? Is this the cover that would make you pick up the prog for the first time, or bring you back if you were a lapsed reader? Why? What is it about this cover that caught your eye?

According to Ninth Art, Marvel are to relaunch their Epic line of comics, and they are looking for contributers. Interested, check out the link below...

It's official: Marvel is relaunching its Epic imprint, and it wants you as a new recruit. So what will Epic mean for aspiring creators, and what will it mean for readers? Is this the beginning of comics' new fanfic revolution?

I know that there has already been 1 Farscape comic (War Story).

Do people here think a Farscape comic could adapt well to 2000ad's format?

I have a feeling it could.

General / Shrinky-dinks???
20 March, 2003, 08:09:01 PM
Anyone remember these, used to come in Shreddies in the 80's, colour them in, punch a hole in them, then shrink them in the oven.

Anyone still got any?

More importantly, and getting the message on topic...

... were there ever any 2000ad related ones?

Off Topic / LOEG: Somebody has missed the point.
13 March, 2003, 04:22:27 PM
So I was reading some movie news yesterday, and I notice that the people in charge of the LOEG (League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen) movie have done a deal with Simon & Schuster to release a novelisation of the movie!!!!

Get that!

Now if they had been clever, surley this would have been out of the question, and anyone wanting to read the "book" should instead buy the trade paperback, or the comics themselves.

What's worse is that the book probably won't even read anything like the original comic.

If the comic was supposed to be a novel, wouldn't Alan Moore have written it as a novel in the first place?

Ok, rant over- sorry it really narked me off when I read about it!
