Having stressed about losing weight since Jan and having not done sweet fanny adams about it, I'm impressed. Well done.

Books & Comics / Re: Kingdom of the Wicked............

I didn't realise how poor the Calibre B/W reproduction was until i got my Full Colour version on Sat.

Glorious colour - such a difference, the Calibre one now looks like a badly photocopied bootleg.

D'Israeli seems to have used his computer to add some colour pencil to a lot of the panels - giving them a new energy - and  airbrushed some of the light effects later on to smooth them out.
Not that I went through and compared the art... Ah go on then it is one of my favourite stories from a favourite artist.

Highly recommended.

But that does mean we get to see Dexter Fletcher die a horrible death - hopefully coughing up thick teeth-staining blood whilst telling 'Sarge' to "go on without him..."

Hopefully he'll have a Cock-a-knee accent like the guy in Deep Rising.

"Karm on den, Yoo Wan-kahs!" - Class.

I look like a fat bloke with a suede head still living under the delusion that a goatee is some how slimming or hides my chins in anyway.

The fact my suede head has nothing to do with hiding male pattern baldness is a source of pride though.

Read it.

Liked it.

Hope the author decides to revisit the same world at some point; whether in a sequel or just another tale untold.

Don't think it's strong movie material though.

and...

4 to ask is the Lightbulb truly dead? and could it come back for some more shining?
6 to complain that more shining is unnessasary
9 to say they'd welcome more shining
7 to state that the lightbulb needs to make way for other new bulbs
6 to say they don't mind either way as there's always other bulbs to look at

Dudley you missed:

4 to say that if like them the cahnger had subscribed they'd have got thier Lightbulb earlier with a free mini-lightbulb keyring.
3 to ask where their free mini-lightbulb keyring is?
5 to ask why if or when will the mini-lightbulb keyring be made available to non-subscribers?
2 to boast of lightbulb subscribing freebies of the past.
1 to announce he's found some lightbulb subscribing freebies of the past on E-bay.

I didn't think his talent was ever in question, just whether he was really using it to create his recent Dredd stuff?

I hated his run on Dredd but the work on his website, especially the game concept and rough sketchs, is mightily impressive.

Bit of a mixed new year bag.

Cover: Nice, but does it really sell the comic to anyone beyond those who already buy 2000ad? I think the casual shopper would find the cover very odd - no info selling what's inside and you have to get close to see what's going on on it - but then has 2000ad given up enticing in the casual shopper?

Dredd: Good follow on, though I'm not a fan of Brashill's graphitti style art - too cartoony for me.

Second City Blues: Nah!

Slaine: I haven't been following the story but does Slaine get dragged away from fighting his enemies every other episode? Very confusing and not worth the effort. Like the art thought.

Cabalistics Inc: Giving the story a go and it's good, though the art still leaves me cold.

Dante: Yay! A character i care for going on adventures that i can't predict the outcome of. It's like the 80's all over again. :)

Overall: Hmm?

Second on Wagner and McMahon.

As a personal preference it'd have to be McMahon around the time of Block Wars and The Fink - pure class.

Or McMahon doing another strip with the same style as his Slaine work - lovely - though not written by Pat Mills as I'd like it to:

a)Make sense.
b)Have more action less talking heads.
c)Seem to be going somewhere.

Help! / Re: What do I do now?!?

If you're looking to create a portfolio from scratch ask folk who do the job you want or similar to send you copies of the design briefs they work to - I'm sure there are some boarders who could help here?

Then work on these - especially those that don't inspire you intially 'cos these are more the norm than the "cool" assignments. Getting something great from a dud brief is a real achievement.

People are always interested to see and can tell a lot more about your work with stuff generated from a set of guidelines rather than just self generated - though these pieces are important too.

Good luck.

And don't let it grind you down.
