Off Topic / Re: Day of Chaos 2: a.Covid-19 thread.

My elderly parents' next-door neighbour is an ambulance worker, and has had the virus twice in the space of eight months.  (Worryingly, he had a chat with my folks over the garden wall the first time around, and neglected to tell them he was infected and thus putting them in danger.)

So yeah: The quicker we all get vaccinated the quicker we'll be out of this mess.

Finished my first entry - not too obscure sadly but I did enjoy working with biro.

Creative Common / Re: I wrote some weird shit

Congratulations, Hawkie. And finally I see where the Hawk part of your board name comes from. (Also, Zac Hawkins is like a sci fi update of the Treasure Island guy - like it.)

Bought - looking forward to reading it.

In a parallel universe we got an HBO Halo Jones series!  :D
In an age of post modernist, ironic superhero shows, like The Boys, a Zenith show also seems like an obvious choice!  :)

That would be lovely.  I wonder if it should be set in the modern era rather than the 80s?  Baggy, Acid House, retro-60s fashion - I don't know if things like that could possibly be relevant to a modern audience.  It doesn't really depend on the backdrop of huge political issues like the Cold War in the way that, say, Watchmen does, so I think it may well comfortably be moved to the 2020s.

I'm not sure if Boris would give work to a supersmart pragmatist like Peter St John, though.

Film Discussion / Re: Dredd (2012)
27 March, 2021, 05:25:59 PM
Well, I never thought I'd post here again but I found out yesterday that Dredd was on Netflix and had my fourth watch, after a healthy gap of a few years.  Nothing will compare with my experience of watching it in 3D in an Imax cinema, but the film is just as great as it always was.

Having listened to the new Penguin audiobooks, and having tried to Toby Longworth's Dredd out of my mind (though he was a million times better than whoever did Dredd in the old radio plays), I still think Karl Urban does Dredd's voice better than anyone else.

And for all the flying blood and guts and horror, it's kind of a beautiful film.  It's an incredible feat, and one which I hadn't really appreciated before, that a grey, grimy and not particularly futuristic-looking setting, coupled with the haunting score, can be made to look aesthetically stunning.  Wouldn't want to live in Peach Trees, mind you.

Fair play to you and the young lad, TB!

On the downside, the last two posts here have inspired me to play QWOP, which I see now was an unconscious way of procrastinating doing my real physical exercise (as is writing this post).

I have, however, discovered a way to run indefinitely in QWOP, using my right foot and left knee to edge forward.  So it's not a wasted afternoon.

News / Re: The Great Dante Reathrough Podcast

Ah, I'd never cancel Dante. The early days of it were a bit like Preacher for me - the main character is a bellend but the story is great fun. (The difference being that Garth Ennis seemed to think Jesse was an absolute paragon of virtue rather than a mouthy, smartarsed twat.)

Well, that was today's work listen. Great stuff as usual. Aiso, glad I'm not alone in thinking that Cruel Britannia was a dark story that showed a very nasty side to Dante's character! Rogue he may be, but there was nothing lovable about sexually harassing a woman by way of framing her and getting her locked up.

Congrats all! Well deserved.  Looking forward to the next one!

"Alan!  Alan!  Could you sign this?  I'll just pass it under the cubicle door!"

I can't help picturing Life Sentence's last scene in Halo Jones...  :o

I'll definitely mention how much I liked his Watchmen sequels.
