Inscription from a Welsh church, over a depiction of the ten commandments (clue)

Hang the feck on a minute. It's just one repeated vowel, isn't it?  I believe I've nailed it.  It rhymes and all.

As if there aren't enough skis in Russia already.

Indeed, if 80's action movies have taught me ought, there are loads of Russkis

I'm not sorry and I'd do it again.

That was kind of the joke I was making  :P

Quote from: Definitely Not Mister Pops on 27 August, 2023, 10:09:40 PMIs he the guy who wants to have sexy times with lobsters or something?

His idea was that hierarchies in human society can be explained by serotonin, which he supports using serotonin in lobsters as a comparison (more serotonin = more aggressive lobsters). While this comparison might have some merits, I'm not sure that likening the way lobsters and humans behave and operate is entirely valid.

Indeed.  Like I say, I don't know much about the guy (other than, as I also said, he seems a bit of a  gimp), but having to leap as far across the evolutionary tree as sea crustaceans to prove a point about men and women suggests a touch of confirmation bias to me.

Really enjoyed the film club episode. I'm also a fan of Crossed - under all the breathtaking depravity, there's a strangely beautiful story of human resilience - so I'm looking forward to listening to this at work tomorrow.

I don't know a lot about Jordan Peterson, other than that he sounds like a bit of a dick and that one of my mates seems to think he's some kind of modern-day Socrates.  :-\

Quote from: Funt Solo [R] on 25 August, 2023, 10:03:22 PMI read a bit more on this and (color me not surprised), the context opens the debate up a little.

Nobody (except for gammons, who are using it to fill their rage-bladders and color our perspective) actually made the claim that "2+2=4 is racist", and nobody made the claim that "2+2=5". Those be straw men! Or women. Or gender neutral folk. Or genderqueer peeps. Or sea-horsies. Or turtles, which is another gammon-baiter.

Anyway ... the point that was being made was that, while basic arithmetic is all fucking QED and objective (2+2=4, yup), the way that mathematics is used, societally, can be subjective. And it can be used for ill. After all, mathematics is just a language, and you can use languages for all sorts of purposes.

Example: Nazi eugenics. (This isn't Godwin's Law, you hairy gibbons! It's just a pertinent example.)

Cheers, Funt.  Lesson learned.  (Lesson for me - don't instantly react to a few seconds of a sound-bite without, as I say, checking the source and the context first.
EDIT: Especially when my knowledge of maths is down there with my knowledge of anything that requires cohesive organisation.)

Quote from: Richard on 14 August, 2023, 09:10:54 PM...and if you think that cover is something, wait til you see Dan's art on Spector this month!

There's a bit of page design in that episode where he does something I don't think I've ever seen before... and I've worked on about 70,000 pages of comics, so that's saying something! It's not in-your-face in its cleverness, but it's smart and incredibly effective.

Wow - you're not wrong.  Hadn't noticed the first time around, but that's genius.

So he's got better at copying likenesses from photographs, except now using digital techniques.

I wasn't really a fan of his prog / Meg stuff, but I have to say I'm very impressed with the stuff in Richard's link.  In hindsight, his style back then seemed to be crying out for technology that had yet to exist.  Maybe he's a portrait artist rather than a comics artist, but he's a good one.

Thanks, guys.  I'd forgotten about droids like Redondo and indeed McMahon, though iirc his last strip was the revisited Sky Chariots years ago.

Expanding the parameters a bit, is John Wagner the only prog 1 droid of any description that still creates for Tharg?
