Now that is a belter.  Popes looked much cooler back then.  Modern-day Catholics are stuck with Jim Bowen with a stalk on his head.

Not so obvious, but guess where the 'Bo' in Bovril comes from.
(Where the 'vril' comes from is just downright odd. I'll leave you to look it up.)

Now that definitely went over my head. Also, bó (cow, of course) is one those many Irish words which comes directly from Latin, which is a fact I would imagine Pat Mills wouldn't like one bit.

Are my memories deceiving me or did The Coming Race crop up in Zenith once?  Also I remember some DC character called Vril Dox, who I only knew about because he was connected to Lobo, who in turn I only knew about because he looked like Bisley's Sláine.

Just to bring this full circle, Sláine is based largely on Cúchulainn, and his main epic The Táin (liberally quoted in the Horned God) is not a story about a king ascending to godhood and uniting tribes against an ancient evil, but about people stealing cows from each other.

I think it's only in the last year that I realised Oxo is so-called because it's cow flavoured.

Not sure if I've said it recently, but I love Space Spinner 2000.  Long may you spark my progstalgia circuits.

Just listened to the Sin City one - brilliant stuff as always.  As is so often the case when I listen to MCBC, I want to reread the comics under discussion immediately.  I'll forget about Frank Miller's not-cool years and get stuck in.

One tiny niggle - Luke doesn't have the Ozzie accent?  The guy may be from England, but he could do voiceovers for Jug McKenzie  ;)

Angry mobs of bigots with burning torches. Nice work, Georgia.  Real classy.

The Fountainhead. I was recommended it and knew very little of Ayn Rand at the time.  I was just baffled at the idea that I was supposed to admire the sociopathic, joyless, rapey weirdo of a protagonist and his awful, brutalist architectural designs. I gave up halfway through.

I'll be painting the sign of the Christchurch Inn pub on Monday afternoon. Drop down and say hello!

Delighted to hear it, Paddy. Must be a massive relief. Whereabouts in Dublin, just out of interest?  I've lived all over the shop myself.

Ah c'mon, they'd have Monica Dolan playing the villain in a documentary about Monica Dolan curing cancer.

I didn't recognise her at all.  If I'd remembered it was her who played Rose West in that series of a few years ago, I might have had more of an inkling.

Quote from: Hawkmumbler on 04 July, 2023, 04:16:03 PMNever a dull moment on Tankie Tuesday.

Think you've mentioned this before and I can't find it on the interweb. Any chance you could explain it to an ageing pre-internet squaxx like me?
.

Tankie Tuesday is just my own localized nonsense thing, as it always seems we get some kind of CCP caliber hogwash from one hack site or the other on a Tuesday; either on this thread or elsewhere.

I'm with you now. Thanks for the explanation

That's a bit unfair.
