Well, I thought it wouldn't get much more disturbing than Loch Henry, but I watched Beyond the Sea last night and was genuinely afraid to fall asleep in case I dreamed about that ending.

The Sunset Limited, though oft considered a minor entry in his canon, is inevitably destined to become one of the defining stage plays of the 21st century.

RIP to a real titan of the literary world.

Now, i suppose I should probably read Blood Meridian, huh...

You really should. I re-read it recently and it's an absolute masterpiece.

Being a bit TAPS* when it comes to plot twists, I really didn't see it coming.  Well, maybe part of it - I won't go into too many spoilers.  But yeah, it was the music that got me too.  I'll never hear that song again without shuddering.

Quote from: IndigoPrime on 20 June, 2023, 08:51:52 AMAnd the lettering looks very different from usual 2000 AD fare, and yet fits really well with the story. It all feels quite... European?

As soon as I saw the heavily Euro/Moebius vibe Tazio was bringing to the strip, I asked The Mighty One if I could try something that leaned more heavily into that feel. His Verdant Majesty liked the sample page I showed him so much that he only docked me half an oil ration, and off we went. :)

That cover is lovely alright, and definitely has more than a touch of the Metal Hurlant type Euro-comics.  Looking forward to seeing your approach to the lettering, Jim.  (Hope you've enough oil left to wash down all those barbecued steaks I see on Instagram... ;) )

He definitely picked up a few of his old Oink plot-threads when he wrote Loch Henry  :o

Turns out I've watched them in the wrong order - the last one I unwisely watched before going to bed last night was Episode 2, Loch Henry.  I don't think I've been as disturbed by a TV show since Chris Morris' Jam.

The new series is out, and telly doesn't get much better than this.  I've watched episodes 2 and 3 back to back tonight and I won't be sleeping easy tonight.

And lots of respect to Salma Hayek for successfully doing her own Being John Malkovitch.  Some proper belly laughs there to break up the mind-twisting madness.

The Cursed Earth was like the first Star Wars film...
I've not seen that artwork before. It's awesome. Thanks for sharing JW!

It really is.  McMahpn at his very best.  And lovely write-up as always, John.  That was absolutely my experience of the Cursed Earth too - knowing it through legend rather than actually reading it (I got round to that eventually too, of course).

The forum can stand only so much controversy.

Well feck me.  Seems I have little to be thinking about these days.
Anyway I've been reading Oink! online; one of the rare 80s funny comics for kids that was actually funny.  Lots of death, blood, piss, shite and bums - that's what kids really wanted, unless that was just me.

Did anyone actually identify as a Chip-ite?  Whizz-kids got a cool giant snake and the front cover; Chip-ites got a rubbish wannabe boxer and had to demolish the real comic to create their own inferior sub-comic.

This board is no place for bigotry, but I mean, come on, Chip-ites.  For fuck's sake.

Cold, passionless DNA does not care if rabbits get hurt or not.  I do, but I'm still a cat person - they're low maintenance, and anyone who depends on me 24 hours a day is spugged.

I've always thought it a bit at-odds with the job description to expect professional killers to also be heroic. I suppose it depends on definitions, but blindly honoring people in that line of work is, at best, rose-tinted.

I know what you mean.  All this 'thank you for your service' stuff - fine, but why not extend the thanks to firefighters?  They put their lives at risk without trying to kill other people.

Thanks a million for the heads-up, Rogue69.  I've paused my Audible membership to save a bit of money but intend to rejoin during the winter months when I have more time to listen.  These will be first on my list!
