General / From Hell

The very good graphic novel that is, not the half-arsed film. Now Alan Moore has kindly provided annotations to each page at the back of my version; which is great as it saves me having to think too hard about it. It's a bleeding good read in its own right too.
But he has deliberately left one page unexplained, ie. the bit where Gull's disembodied soul ends up in Ireland before it joins the Gods. Bastard. Now I have to work this one out on my own. It's something to do with Mary Kelly. Did Gull murder the wrong prostitute or something? Did the real Mary Kelly go back to ireland? Any ideas?
If you haven't read it, of course, do. Then answer me.

Help! / Re: Garth Ennis Dredd
20 November, 2007, 09:58:27 PM
Hated the Greener one, and  Return of the King even more, if only for the line 'The law is never wrong, Hershey. You know that.' Fuxake, hadn't the guy been reading Necropolis or the Democracy thread?
But I have to say I liked Helter Skelter, and Monkey On My Back more. In my opinion he finally got his head round Dredd (at least as a character, though I thought the stories were alright too) with those two.

Adam and the Ants were the first band I can remember liking so they'll always have a special place in my heart. Mind you, Adam really is a mad bastard these days

Master of the Gay Bolga.

Anyway, don't forget it was a woman who invented Slaine's look

Yeah, that John Cassavetes one was excellent alright. He had another couple of great ones; I liked 'Politics' (if i remember the name correctly) and the other one about the paralysed man with the pet monkey.

'Compare and contrast with "Roadkill" which is kinda' let down at the end where Dredd is an unbelievable shit to an old guy who has been nothing but a victim.'

Not only that but Dredd decides to let the flying car kill all the crime bosses so the judges don't have to. Dredd allowing perps to carry out killings to save the judges trouble? Not a chance. Still, though, I like Smith's Dredd. He has a good stab at the 'craze' type stories too.

The first Planet Gary would be my choice. Was far from impressed by Judgement Day.
But I have to say that these days, the person who 'gets' Dredd's character most (next to John Wagner of course)is John Smith. Gordon Rennie is a fine Dredd scripter, but I realy feel that Smith's Dredd as a character resembles Wagner's more

Actually wasn't hugely into Dante for years; but with the increase of Burns' work, improvements in dialogue and more interesting storylines I've been getting into it much more in since the whole Czar Wars thing.

I've always preferred Burns; more so now he's started putting lines into his work again. I've never been a big fan of Fraser, sometimes it all looks a bit rushed and careless. Respect though; he created the look of whole thing.

Burns seems to be coming out on top, but I remember a poll where Fraser won by a mile.

and I for one would do a Burns chick much quicker than a Fraser one, insofar as it is is possible to 'do' a series of microscopic coloured dots on a piece of paper.

Film & TV / Re: Watchmen update...

A lot of comic fans are determined not to enjoy this film.
Yeah, I'm sure the comic will be better, but for me the novelty value of looking at the characters actually moving and talking on the big screen, in way that's faithful to the comic, will make it an enjoyable experience in its own right.
A History of Violence was apparently a better book than film (I haven't seen it), but it still won awards.
Watchmen, as I said before, could well be shit. But an open mind won't hurt anybody. If you think it should only be a comic, then don't watch the film, simple as that. In any case, it's bound to make a non-comic readers look at Watchmen, which will hopefully help the comic industry in general.

Would you look at the picture of the Max Headroom chap beside Moloch. You'd be hard pressed to find a closer match.

Ah, dude, give it a chance till you've seen it! It looks freaking excellent so far if you ask me. I'll reserve judgement myself - it could well be shite, but let's wait and see

'You can't be gay in Dr Who without wanting to screw pretty much everybody all the time'

You also can't be gay in a Garth Ennis story without being either a. a rapist, b. an S & M fetishist or c. a transvestite.  Except for one Punisher story where a gay sheriff is actually a normal person.

You can't draw a picture of Mohammed. Why? I don't know him but he's probably big and tough enough not to mind if it doesn't look like him

'Also, in Ireland you cant have a TV drama unless it's about a bunch of self-centred whining young people doing drugs and having sex with one another.'

Jesus, you're not wrong; I'm mercifully forgotten the names of that god-awful one about the midlands town and that other sack of shit about the  Dublin pub, both of which tried pathetically hard to scream 'LOOK AT US, WE'RE NOT REPRESSED ANY MORE'. Sorry, tangent of my own here.

Anyway, you can't have anyone having underage sex in a horror film without being killed for it.

'JayBC: Not a bad idea, maybe a year long story for the Meg?'

Armageddon: The Bad Man 2, maybe? Well, maybe not... still, I'd love to see something along those lines.
I remember years ago thinking that I'd like to see a story about someone travelling from the then-recently nuked-out Mega City 2 to take revenge on MC1. Then it happened in a Hershey story, and while it wasn't shit, it wasn't the Mae West either. Anyway, I'd forgotten about the excellent Exploding Man years earlier, a similar plot but much better. 'Nobel paid for his crime... about a million times.'
