Where are you both getting your reader figures for 2kad? I must agree that when it comes to a movie, changes are inevitible, and it may be better to play to the millions that have seen the film rather than the couple of thousand that read the comic.

just thought of an eg. The Stainless Steel Rat, now those books were fantastic, however the comic strip in 2kad was atrocious, and p'd off quite a few fans (me included), this didn't stop me from continuing to read the books though!

mine lay about for 4-6 weeks, longer if theres long ongoing stuff, then without caution are transfered, sometimes bending a spine, to a safety PVC liner, in a damp and smelly corner of the kitchen, from where it is taken every tuesday morning to the 'chute' Oh! great chute! and finds it's way to the glorious landfill site that is the South East of England!
The megs on the other hand are all stood side by side on the shelves over the TV, waiting magazine boxes to store them in.

ooohhh I so forgot about the hand! I always liked the new eagle for the photo strips, esp doomlord. and I remember something about Dan Dares car with a revolving licence plate, and some girl with silver hair or constantly changing hair. Am I right or going senile, yet again?

Prog / just re-read it...
31 December, 2001, 07:45:22 PM
my girlfriend bought me a subscription to 2kad and the meg this year, my subscription starts with the 2002prog, so as it's a christmas present it has to sit under the tree until christmas morning, I read it then, but a bottle of port, a merlot and some cheep tesco's champagne, caused a slight memory lapse, and I re-read the thing last night.

as for SH itself, you know me, a big super hero fan, I loved every minute of it, reminded me a little of Hellblazers love street, or Shade the changing man, rather than Zenith as others have said, without seeing whats to come of SH, I would so love it to be a ongoing thing, love to see Brendan McCarthys take on the art, or Brian Bollands take on some covers, actually keeping the B's how about a Bisley acid trip - I think he'd be just fine, moving away from people with a B in their name, how about Colin Mcneil.

Don't get me wrong, Fraisers work is appreciated, altough with this as the third example of his work I've seen, I can't help but ask myself but shouldn't art styles suit the story, rather than finding a story to suit the art.

I'm going to leave that in, I think what I'm really trying to say is that already Fraisers style is begining to grate a little, oh go on then, I'll give him time to mature.

well mate, dont all those nods to Helter skelter scare ya! I think SH will be the introduction of a new character to MC1, by means of said Helter Skelter, that will kill the old joe and leave clone boyu in his place!

"I don't think the writers really captured Dredd or his world. "

but thats my point, scojo, it's not about captuaring dredd or his world, it's about re-writing a character for different markets, film, games novels etc. I don't expect the game of dredd to have all the continuity of the comic, I don't expect the film to have it all either, I would be disapointed if they made that mistake with 2kad or the Meg, but with other formats of the character, we have to be able to alter at will, elements of a myth or story, which will allow new, virgin readers/viewers access to a great character.

imagne all the calls recently (and forever I suppose) of a Dredd animated TV series, as of episode one, how are you going to cram 25 years of history into a 20min cartoon, you have to either start from scatch or (as gardners are doing at this time of year) savagly prune the history for a restart.

for example, Batman and Superman, two great characters (maybe DC will be punished by time/warner and have them removed for failing to do great things with them) first appeared in the 30's, and with each succesive decade have reinvented themselves, recreated their history, and have survived many differing formats, and to this day are probably the only two superheroes you could ask your mum to name.

Dredd has a slight difference here. 2kad has always insisted in real time growth (unlike the 10 publication years to one character year of DC continuity) this allows for the death of the character in my lifetime, a culmination of a storyline, a creation of a myth, what then - a clone JD is not going to swing it - the reader will always want the original - a revamp, a rewriting of dredd history is required, and these DC issues, the films and the games can be seen as attempts to do this, eventually, come the 50th aniversary, what are we going to do? just upsticks and forget about Dredd, or reimanige him for new readers.

I cant belive you guys are knocking the DC dredd so quickly, and so strongly! I found ther series to be a real breath of fresh air, none of the heavy continuity guilt that long term readers hang on their favorite character. I think the series took some of the great elements of the chaacter that is JD and left the baggage at the door, so to speak, the fact that the comic ran for 2 years, in a period in american comics when unless you have an X in the title... does say something good about it, maybe the launch of a sister title was too early, maybe the hardcore fans shunned it so quickly and easily, but personally I've been calling for such a rewrite of dredds history for years now, a successful and strong character will survive many rewrites or imaginings, cheap films, novels, games etc.

If you like Dredd, read 2000ad, get the Meg, drink sythi-caff from a JD mug, sleep in your justice dept pyjammas, and under a justice department quilt, I think youll love the DC Dredd.
