General / Re: IRC Chatroom

Ok, here's a diagram detailing the connections that are going on.

The only thing not explained in the diagram is this :

mIRC is a program you download and run from your desktop, like Word or something. Then you use it to connect to various other servers, just like Internet Explorer but without any graphics. It's only concerned with picking up text information, so is much faster.

PJirc is the program sitting on the 2000adonline server which you download and run from inside your web browser every time you click on the IRC Chatroom link. Similar in funtion to mIRC but is much smaller, and considerably slower. It is written in Java and should work on any computer that can run Java, wheras mIRC and programs like it are written in C++ and compiled for modern PC's.
Hope that goes someway to illuminating the murk.. mirc ... ha ha !

Well I'm glad you liked it rc, unfortunately many of the users are put off by the extra component needed to run it in their browser.

There is a solution to this, and I have discussed it with Wake, however it would require quite a serious amount of hosting reconfiguration. Which obviously costs money and is not an attractive option.

On a slightly different note, it is an IRC chat room, therefore connecting to it with your favourite IRC client like mIRC, PIRCH, Virc or Smircle on the Mac is pretty easy. the settings are as folows..

Server  : irc.unreal-irc.net

Port    : 6669

Channel : #NerveCentre

Using a proper client is much faster than using your browser to get into the chat room.

For Windows the most popular client is here.

Oh, and the dice script is working now, typical command is

roll 1d20

pretty straight forward !

General / Patch for PC out now, get it here
18 October, 2003, 04:21:57 AM
yes indeed, full instructions list, including server scripting (drool....) and update patch.

anyway, get the full 12 Mb file at the ALL NEW (unnoficial) SUPPORT site for this totally awesome game.

Now you could ignore this and go off and try and get it yourself, save my bandwidth etc. - but, if you just want the file, and don't want to mess about... blah blah

incidentally, there doesn't seem to be an official link announced anywhere anywhere for this.

That pinstripe maniac MaxNormal has got me moonlighting on one of his dodgy websites. Which as far as I can tell is devoted to 'Dredd going Rogue' with generally chaotic reults.

Seems that Total Khaos (.tk, ha!) is going to be quite a popular choice of gameplay.

Anyway, you can see for yourself

And for PC Multiplayers the New Mission feature  is announced today in the SJS Archives.

Not related to original topic.

However, there was some earlier conflab about the comms_droid being entirely automated.

This is the case (within the confines of the IRC Chatroom).

However, during the automation there have been a couple of (AI) algorithms added, which may or may not fool the user.

pasting this log as an example

As promised, a new game in the irc room

!quotes

Taken from 'The MC1 Dictionary of quotations'

an example :

"Thunder Chops is well behind on 667 kilos, but he's coming on with a late burst. There's a glazed look in his eyes and he's eating like a wild man! Oh! Something's wrong here! Thunder Chops is trying to eat his ******* !" Commentator, 27th Heavyweight Eating Championship (Prog 334)

You type what you think ******* stands for and a point is added to your running total.

oh, and King Troutman isn't real, he's a cunning automaton manufactured by the Dictators of Zrag !

Website and Forum / New Questions
22 April, 2003, 12:48:17 AM
By way of an appetiser, there are now 100 questions in the Dredd general knowledge game, also being frantically typed up by mr sam_slade is the quotations game.

See the irc chatroom for increased questions now, and new game by wednesday.

Both these additions are by way of testing for the huge roleplay script which introduces Trapper Kval (Son of Hag), which is so hush-hush that I can't even keep the m0n1t0rw sw1ctch3d 0n whgile I'm typingaersdfb...

Graham Manley interview is still on for early May, and apparently Mr Wake has something up his sleeve along the same lines, discretion prevents me from revealing any more about it, naturally.

addition:

scramble game, a comprehensive list of Dredd lingo and Mega City Speak, cunningly re arranged to confuse and confound you.

so now there's 2 games;

&

ah, the joy of text.

Ah, er ... sorry, but the chat server has been creaking a bit, and they took it down to do some reconfiguring.

This opportunity was not wasted however, as an alternative has been sourced.

This server is located in the UK, probably the Docklands, or Leeds - so anyone living in either of those two areas, can expect to connect within a couple of seconds.

Until then, the old server is back up and running since about 9.00 this evening, the quiz is live and ready to go.

Anyone wishing to participate should join and type the following command to activate the questions ...

  !start

then there will be a brief line or two of text, after which you type this ...

  !general

of course, if the questions are running when you arrive, all you do is type whatever you think the answer is and press return !

how easy is that ?

again, apologies to those who were met with a blank screen, it was merely a maintenance issue, which has been fully resolved.

As mentioned in the  'Database' chatroom, there is currently an extravaganza, of Dredd and Mega City One trivia, going on RIGHT NOW, in the IRC Chatroom.

Just click on the link to the room, choose a nickname and press 'Connect'

Then enjoy the plethora (well 60 so far) of questions which will be put to you by the interactive comms_droid. Not quite the panache of Leslie Crowther, but still an entertaining experience.... (some say addictive !)

25 of the questions have been leeched from 2000AD.NU, Cheers Gents !

and the rest I toiled over, for hours, and hours, like really a long time.
In fact so long that what's needed is somebody else to compile the questions, as I'm looking to increase the list to somewhere in the region of 5000, thus allowing the most regular of users to see fresh questions most plays.

So, any contributions will be most welcome.

Anyway, enjoy, and remember - the more that use it, the easier it is for others to get in.

I see, so the whole thing has come down to 'phnarrs'

ok....

well there are no 'phnarrs' in the recent addition of interactive gameshow abilities to the IRC Chatroom, so why not brush up on your Dredd trivia and join the competition.

I'm considering a prize as well, closing date ... hmmm lets say a week from today, which would be the 30th March.

The user with the highest score will be the recipient of this mystery prize.

(how enthralling!)

Frankly, I'm disgusted...

Still, there's always ebay.

While the comms_droid is logged into the irc chatroom, it will be easier for UK users to gain entry.

This is a temporary measure, as soon as it's ready the entire chatroom will be moved to a server in Surrey, instead of the existing server which is in North America.

This means much faster connections will be possible, with or without a droid in the channel.

Oh dear, looks like I've been rumbled.

er..

I shall say one thing and one thing only on the whole 'publicity' thing.

and if you want irony ...

How about the fact that this new banner was actually an attempt to upgrade the aesthetic medium, and in effect the ensuing debacle has cost ALL the sponsors some credible promotional space. In effect, by NOT redesigning said banner, and retaining the 'green dog puking toothpaste' forerunner, I would have been doing the better thing by such admirable advertisers as Titan and Gunlok.

I say to you Mr Wake, that perhaps you and Dom1 should rethink your strategy re: banners. And that's without my own product in mind.

In summary, the chatroom was never about relentless self promotion, in fact, originally I asked for an LRD in return, not a banner.

Which , incidentally, would still be a favourable option (hint).

How tiresome, the old 'grown up' act.

If you were primarily interested in voicing objections about irrelevant banners, you should have directed your views to the webmaster, not made sarcastic jibes about it on the board.

Apart from being considerably less antagonistic, it may have prevented you from having to type all these massively dull posts.

And as for my language and pictorial references, I would hope that at the very least, they may be entertaining for the odd reader here and there.

Something I'm sure you'd agree is important, even if your content doesn't reflect it.
