Off Topic / Re: George Best RIP
26 November, 2005, 02:43:31 AM
I was just watching the news on BBC 4, and they had Clive James on talking about Best. Now, it's a long time since I thought of James as anything other than a smug complacent tosser, but he was bang on when he attacked the press for their barely concealed revelling in Best's decline. I was looking at a gallery on the Times site today, and I don't think there was a single photo of him on the field. Of course, his celebrity and the alcoholism that was intimately associated with it is part of his story and his significance, but I find it very sad that so many people choose to remember him as a celebrity drunk rather than the astonishingly gifted footballer he was. It's a bit like the way fat Vegas Elvis overshadows young Elvis, I guess.

ah, I thought it was pretty much what you'd expect from Wossy. Entertaining, but in the end empty. Surprised he mentioned Dredd rather than 2000ad though, considering what a fanboy he is. And I thought his little rant about how personal his love of comics is was surprisingly touching.

I'm determined to send him an email on Monday demanding he makes a TV series idea about the history of comics. Dammit, if he doesn't, who will?

hmmm, I'm in two minds about this. I love early Tank Girl to bits, but the later stuff is pretty dreadful*. But I'll wait and see how it turns out. And if it means new strip stuff from Jamie Hewlett, that's got to be a good thing.

* There are some people who will tell you there was a Tank Girl film. But they'll also tell you there was a Dredd film. they're lying, don't listen to them.

The Daily Mail, on the other hand, are probably considering suing for plagiarism. ;)

I think it would have made a better show if they'd sent Johnny Vaughan into space. And left him there.

I think it's a racing certainty that there'll be a Prog 2006.

Genius joke on Outpost Gallifrey (paraphrased):
Are they still allergic to gold?
No, now it's all Spandau Ballet songs.

I'm torn about the design, it's beautifully rendered, but it is essentially a robot, isn't it? I'd have liked to see a bit more signs of the rotting corpse underneath. Y'know. a bit of ... seepage.
Nice face, though. captures the essential melancholy of the cybermen nicely.

I really hope the voices go for the old-skool sing-song stylee rather than the crappy later version.

Prog / Re: Prog 1464: Scorched Earth........

Whenever I hear talk of 9/11, I think of the self-righteous scorn that was poured on Stockhausen for describing it as "the greatest work of art in the cosmos ? compared to that, we composers are nothing."
It seemed tasteless at the time, but by god, every time I see those towers burning on TV now (and that scene has  benn played and replayed over and over for our entertainmet) I think how right he was.

which is a long-winded way of saying, I had my doubts about that panel, but reflection makes me think it was justified.
