Not exactly. AoP13 can be done on next to no budget, with unknowns - i.e. pretty much like the first version, and to my mind when Carpenter works best. EFLA *had* to have modern SFX, but they seem to be stand-ins for the plot for a great deal of the movie.

The first ten minutes or so of VAMPIRES was ace. He needs to get off the damn SF/horror/genre tip and do something realistic, preferably with unknowns, though. Maybe a remake of AoP13, as he seems to enjoy remaking his own movies (see ESCAPE FROM L.A., but only if your eyes have been glued open).

(Reply actually to Gordon, sorry Odders)

"...can't be that bad"

It can if they're being attacked by what appear to be 100 Marilyn Mansons...!

That sounds an awful lot like John Carpenter's PRINCE OF DARKNESS to me, too. Donald Pleasance plays the priest, IIRC. Mostly memorable for Satan taking a physical form made out of radioactive limeade.

Carpenter is the KING of the siege movie - see also ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13. But not GHOSTS OF MARS, cos it's crap.

CANDYMAN: FAREWELL TO THE FLESH might as well have been called FAREWELL TO THE FRANCHISE, as it was overwritten, under-acted dross. Also, too many damn bees!

Standing on buses, when you get the unique feeling of smacking your head on the ceiling every time you go over so much as a stray leaf.

Let me know what's going on with ShedCon; I'll be in town for once on the Friday night, and can probably suggest reasonable pubs / direct you to food vendors...

...head-banging with hardbacks will not occur, however :P

Agreed re: the importance of Hill; he was a powerhouse against Les Bleus and will no doubt be a key player on Saturday.

As to the picking of Tindall - yeah, you're probably right. The old 15-man drive in full effect ;)

I honestly don't know about Saturday. I doubt England will try for an out-and-out kicking duel in the way they did vs France, especially as our lineout has looked weak all tournament and was downright dismal in attack against France (though in defense, it was great).

I strongly suspect that Wilko will be "taken out" if he starts looking like getting all the points; my logic as Aus manager would be that getting a player sin binned or even sent off would be worth it to cripple England's tactics.

Mind you, ONE - just ONE - really good game from our backs could win this thing, and vice versa Australia. As long as Dawson and Gregan realise that it is possible to ship the ball (a) to the open side and (b) to the backs.

I'll take the controversial standpoints that it will be a good game of rugby, and that England will win it by a try.

WRONG! WRONGWRONGWRONGWRONGWRONG.

CF last year's try-fests in the Six Nations, and against Aus, NZ and SA. The gameplan for the RWC is to win, regardless of how. Wilko & co couldn't give a monkey's if JW kicks every point; the fact is that the team's strength and ? vitally ? discipline is what's putting them in kicking / tactical positions. Look at our possession and penalties conceded records, and you'll get an inclination of why I reckon we're gonna win this...

Heh, didn't know that QT co-produced IRON MONKEY!

IM is ace, by the way, esp if you like wire-fu a la MATRIX; same action director (Yuen Woo Ping) and an excellent cast (Jet Li, Donnie Yen)...

Avoid the "sequel" at all costs, though.

The BABYCART series is indeed the same thing as LONE WOLF AND CUB, although the films don't complete the story (as the complete LW&C runs to around 3000+ pages, this is hardly surprising).

There are six BABYCART movies; SHOGUN ASSASSIN was a compilation of action sequences from the first three, spliced together for the Western market. The films are all perfectly enjoyable in and of themselves, but lack anything like the depth and resonance of the original manga, and there's not really any great need to own or indeed bother watching more than one of them.

Next week: How to navigate through the eight-million-or-so Wong Fei Hong movies...
