>> Common enough middle name on these priest-ridden shores . . .

So you're saying it's a bit Irish.

Holy Mother of God! According to Wikipedia, Gay Byrne's middle name is . . . Mary.

>> Or the Canadian I met, who seemed like a really nice guy till he started boasting about his gay-bashing days . . .

Heh. So not only are you a little bit homophobic, you're none too canuck-crazy, either, eh?

>> The 'gay=crap' thing seems unfortunate, but i suspect that's just language and its fickle ways . . .

Yeah, the word 'gay' has had at least three other meanings, specifically "prostitute", "happy", and "homosexual".

If it hadn't been for those pesky terrorists, Prince John would have fallen into Volgan hands.

>> If you start counting things like that, then you get into thinking about every Tharg tale where he has threatened to feed someone to Mek Quake.

So no Ro-Jaws and Hammer-Stein's Laugh-In, then.

In any Ed Norton film, three things are ALWAYS guaranteed to happen:

His character will have some form of dissociative identity disorder

At least one those identities will get the snot beaten out of him

There'll be much running about, in public, wearing little more than a pair of boxer shorts.

The only surprise here is that Ed wasn't cast in the first big screen version.

It deserves to be collected but there'd be a problem with the centre spreads.

So how would YOU be portrayed, Ade?

Peter:

Inadvertently, you're quite right. Costner does seem to have a love/hate relationship with Kevin Reynolds, Waterworld's director, despite their involvement in the fantabulous Fandango.

Payback was directed by Brian Hegeland although a third of it was reshot without the Razzie-winning Postman scripter helming (See? Everything's connected!), at Gibson's request, IIRC.

>> So as befor don't blame the actor blame the director.

I could be wrong but you seem to be under the misapprehension that the director always has final say and that actors are simply hired cattle.

Waterworld, American History X, and Payback are just three films in which directorial decisions were overruled the leads.

>> You know the one that's a Klingon moon exploding.

I can maybe accept, say, the CGI version of the Death Star exploding with a disc-like wave but surely a moon should have a spherical blast emanating from it?

1. Dredd, Joe (Judge and all-round hard bastard).

2. Dare, Daniel McGregor (Space bloke and generally nice chap).

3. When the Wind Blows. Truly heartbreaking and, of all the comic book adaptations I've seen, by far the only one that deserves a place on my DvD shelf.
