. . . And this is just the latest time I've come to you for counsel or for help. Anyway, I'm trying to find the video for a car ad from the late '90s/early Noughties.

Realizing some aging cosca-type has just entered the house, another younger chap makes a hasty exit through the bedroom window of the woman he's been dallying with. The implication is he's been knocking off the older man's missus, but no! The older man is in fact his old man, the woman his own partner, and Dad's just turned up for their weekend fishing trip (or some such, which the young shoal dodger's trying to avoid).

Accompanied by Dean Martin swinging his way through 'Memories Are Made of This'.

More EQUILIBRIUM than THE MATRIX (as the blurbitis would have us believe), it squanders a decent cast (employing at least half of Australia's ten actors) and an interesting premise for contrived predictability and obligatory achtung set-pieces. A shame, really, as the minor details in the first fifteen minutes or so (fashions, the pervasive smoking, Ethan's ear) seemed to suggest a bit more thinking than usual had gone into this.

Always nice to see Sam Neill playing a villain, though. And there's a few blue boobies for those of you hankering for a Neytiri fix but can't face another three-hour stint in the cinema.

Diplomatically speaking:

Thunderbird 1: Russia
Thunderbird 2: the United States
Thunderbird 3: China
Thunderbird 4: the United Kingdom
Thunderbird 5: France

Kudos in advance for Lady Penelope/FAB 1 and Thunderbird 6. And if you work it as a RESERVOIR DOGS routine.

That was likely the Estate of Terry Nation, not the Beeb.

Brill idea. It could be the first in a series of features, telling readers how they can recreate classic Who special effects.

Saw this last week, along with SEX & DRUGS & ROCK & ROLL (coincidently, another film focusing on a father-son relationship except, in the latter's case, they're having to survive Ian Dury).

Not having read the novel, I've no idea how the film compares but I found it surprisingly uplifting, which made it something of a slight disappointment. While the post-apocalyptic desolation is realized brilliantly, the miserablism is at times undermined by that very relationship at the film's core; often opting for a 'touching' sentimentalism, whereas a harsh, desperate triteness would've been far more effective (for me, at least).

But yeah, definitely worth a look. And, with the exception of Charlize, the cameos are almost unregonizable.

Indeed, this would be the case if you hadn't gotten the thing entirely the wrong way round- he wanted to be ginger last time and was expressing disappointment that he still wasn't this time.

He did? Well, that's a relief to hear. Some of my best friends are ginger.

QuoteRTD still has a problem with interracial couples,

Sorry, but WHAT? Where the fuck does this come from, other than an apparent desire to find a fault in the paring of Micky and Martha?

We've been here before, so let's not end up debating a minor observation more than it deserves. However, in striving for an ethnically diverse cast, the show has inadvertently had four of its five interracial couples either split up or portrayed negatively. There's no agenda, I'm sure; it's simply another example of how RTD doesn't bother thinking through his plots and any implications that may arise there from.

The pairing up of Mickey and Martha isn't in itself an issue but nor was it necessary. It was done (I presume) for the sake of compression (ridiculous given how long the ending went on for); in which case, why not have shown Mickey and Rose together and not break up Martha and Thomas?

Accepting both the superficial and more profound changes in new Who would've been so much easier for me if RTD's engendered contempt of the show's audience hadn't become so obvious so early on in the revamp.

That new Who doesn't come close to being good is only so much a matter of personal taste. I've got no problem with the show being a melodrama if it's done well; yet, as has been the case since the first season, the heroics were mostly trite and the soap narratives mawkish. What little plot there was last night often unfolded in exposition alone, which works only if the actor concerned has the skill and gravitas of Timothy Dalton; less so if you're having to rely on Tennant's champing resolve or John Simm squealing and clapping his hands.

And, oh dear. Matt Smith. Tennant at least was able to pull off RTD's attrocious post-regeneration dialogue. And as a proper Shakespearean actor, Dalton's allowed to spit.

Parting shots:

1) In the grand scheme of things, the Doctor's aversion to being a ginger isn't as offensive as it would have been if, say, he'd instead expressed relief at not being Irish or black; but it's the same casual prejudice RTD imbued the Doctor with in 'New Earth' just for the sake of a cheap laugh.

2) RTD still has a problem with interracial couples, I see. No longer engaged to Thomas Milligan, Martha's now married to Mickey. The ends credits, that's how long I'm giving Donna before she and Sean seek an annulment.

'It's the end'. Yes it is, thank fuck.

Quote from: Mardroid on 27 December, 2009, 07:03:47 PMI'm undecided how good an actor Bernard Cribbens is, but

a) Wilfred is a wonderful character.
b) he acted his socks off this episode. Just look at the tears in his eyes in the coffee shop scene.

Don't get me wrong. There were faults in this episode. Pretty major faults, but those two actors weren't the issue if any.

The problem is in both cases Bernie and June have been cast only because of who they are. And yes, while yer man Cribbins was quite affecting in the cafe scene (an attempt at riffing 'Remembrance of the Daleks', it seemed), the moment's completely ballsed-up by RTD and Tennant both getting misty-eyed, too.

Well, I'm buggered. For once, I was almost able to enjoy new Who (Ooh! Ooh! Oooohh! The incredible new Who likes you!) for the utter shit it is. Although, admittedly, that's more likely due to me no longer giving a flying fuck than what RTD seems to think passes for entertainment.

Eric Roberts had gravitas and some decent scenery to chew but, egad, one brief moment of near-brilliance can't hide the fact John Simm is by far the WORST Master EVER. Thank fuck I stopped watching after 'The Shakespeare Code' and wasn't subjected to his rotten pig's arse of a performance when he first took on the role.

Otherwise, RTD seems to making less of an effort than usual. Even the naff humour (courtesy of the OAPs) and the silly horror (at the expense of some homeless blokes) didn't have me screaming TARDIS-blue obscenities at the TV. And after four years, Tennant's STILL champing his way through that fucking Mockney accent.

Quote from: Emperor on 26 December, 2009, 01:24:48 AMit can't get any worse

Have a little faith, man. It's an RTD season-finale, of COURSE it'll be worse!
