Film & TV / Re: which boxset do you have?
04 May, 2009, 02:40:36 PM
I know, I know, but I couldn't resist.

I have lots of tv shows, taped off the telly on VHS- which I keep in boxes under the stairs. Does that count?

Well now, I ot home from work and found my brand-new, gorgeous laptop had arrived! So I nip out, buy meself a dongle, and here I am, an hour later, connected to the Internet at home for a change- and the first place I decide to visit is this very forum.

So, hello from me, sitting on me bed, back against the wall, laptop atop me lap, talking to you.

That is all.

I'm sticking this in here, cos I don't want to clog up the General section with such a vanity piece. I've just realised that, in a few weeks, I'll have been here, posting, for eight years. This is something of a milestone and I'd like to raise a glass of MacMac to my fellow boarders- none of whom I've met in the flesh (though I have spoken to Dave or Maryanddavid fame once or twice).

Apologies for ranting at some boarders in the past- I quite obviously wasn't in a happy place. And thanks to everyone who's ever responded to a post of mine in a quirky, amusing or bizarre way. That's what I'm here for.

Well, if Dr bloody Who can get threads all to itself...

Yay! Primeval's back! Egyptian monster-god on the loose in a museum. Primeval does 'The Relic', with bipedal crocodile beastie? New cast, new series, girly hair for Cutter.

Stop press! Etc! This month's Sci-Fi Now mag, on sale now,  has a ten page "guide to the legendary 2000ad comic" feature. Well, it's nine pages, if you discount the page-sized tooth logo they use to open it! That's my bathtime fun tonight sorted.

Classifieds / WANTED: Prog 2005 (Alt cover)
03 March, 2009, 08:53:59 PM
Sigh.

It is my hope that one of you, somewhere out there, will have the alternatively-covered xmas prog that was, apparently, "given away at railway stations" back in 2004. It has a cg Rogue Trooper on the cover, but is apparently in all other ways exactly the same as the normal one.

I am willing to pay cash. Or at this late stage, maybe even sexual favours.

Help! / Novels help needed!
20 September, 2008, 06:19:23 PM
Hey there,

Yesterday I moved aside a big pile of crap next to the wife's side of the bed, and found a neatly stacked set of Black Flame 2000ad novels that had slipped into the bit of my brain I use for unconsciously storing lists of stuff I like and/or want to keep but which don't occupy any immediate up-front brainage whatsoever. In other words, that I'd forgotten about. I found my first wife there as well, squatting and blinking as the towers of paper thrill-power and 70s/80s British Marvel goodness she'd long moaned about were eased aside and sunlight shone upon her for the first time in a decade. Actually, I'm joking about that. I have no ex-wives. Well, not yet. I have a "Hi-Ex Wife" though. She's my "lawgiver" and what she says, goes.

Anyway.

I flicked through a few of these and remembered liking the ones I'd read, a lot- so did a quick web-search to get a complete list of all the titles released (am I right in thinking they've stopped?) and could find... well, bugger-all, really.

So- could some kind soul please post a list of the whole lot? Don't need synopses- just titles really, to allow me rampant eBayery once payday arrives.

Many thanks in advance!

Your scrotnig pal,

Every year I do this, every year. And what are the chances of them actually reading the damn thing when they get older? CLose to zero, I'd say. But still we soldier on.

Film & TV / Halloween
25 September, 2007, 10:36:15 AM
Saw this at the weekend, and was absolutely blown away. It's not perfect by any means- the pacing is all over the shop, it's two disparate movies tacked together, one about the young Michael and his problems, the other a semi-remake of Carpenter's original, and at no time does it allow you to feel the build up to Halloween night, as the original does. In fact, this could easily take place at any time of the year, Halloween is so inconsequential to the plot.

But.

My Christ, it's good. There is a genuine sense of dread throughout the first half, deepened by the backstory that Zombie has created for Michael. All so much more convincing than what we'd had before. Michael as "nice kid who went bad for no reason whatsoever" is a fine idea- it's got that Unknowable Evil vibe that sets up all that Celtic mythology nonsense from the sequels- but, psychologically, it's pish. He may as well have been bitten by a vampire, it's that far removed from reality. Zombie's Halloween benefits greatly by grounding Michael in truth from the off. There's no bullshit here, Zombie never tries to mythologise Michael- he's not unstoppable, the iconography of Halloween is missing, even the titles play, not over a looming slow zoom into a flaming pumpkin, but over a seriously disturbed kid running along a school corridor. This is the original, remade for grown-ups.

Perhaps the most pertinent bit comes when he, eventually, murders his sister. I won't spoil it, but if that isn't an almost-flawless representation of parental nightmare, post Slasher Movies, I don't know what is. Look at what he's wearing and think of the tabloid headlines.

When the remake bit gets underway, the movie goes a bit awry. Laurie Strode is good, but never really holds up to Jamie Lee. However, the presence and determination of Michael is far in excess of anything seen in the franchise since part one. The murders are shot, edited and scored in such a deeply shocking way that I think most other films will be borrowing heavily from this from now on. In fact, the sound design alone is enough to guarantee this a place in history. It's absolutely fantastic, and the little changes made to the cues from Carpenter's original score will delight fans and scare the piss out of everyone else.

In short, this is easily the best horror film of the year so far. All the bits that concerned me beforehand- a recast Loomis, a lunky gert hippy as Michael, the massive shift in tone from the first film- in retrospect are the shot in the arm it needed. If this spawns a whole new run of sequels that get shit+
tier and shittier as they go along, well then fine. Like the original series, we'll always have this utterly maginificent opener.

Futureshock! The Story of 2000AD
22 September 2007
Phill Jupitus tells the story of 2000AD.

Over the past 30 years, the weekly British comic's distinctive visions of the future have shaped the imaginations of a generation of young readers. Its dark and gritty tales, often set in a near future of post-apocalyptic urban decay, have changed the tone of science fiction.

Followed by News.

Film & TV / Does ANYONE remember...THIS?
12 April, 2007, 01:38:31 PM
Righto. This has been bugging me for years and years and years. Back in the 70s/ 80s, I saw an epsiode of a show (though it may have been a one-off play) about a bunch of UFO-spotters who went "up to a hill" to watch for alien presences. There was a little boy involved (I think) and it ended with the aliens being strange glowing green plant-things, in glass jars, on somebody's bed, I guess that this was a "twist"- that while the UFO spotters were "up the hill", the aliens were "with us all along".

Anyway- I have no other memory than that (except it MAY have had him from Captain Zep in it... but I may be getting confused with Kinvig), but it has stayed with me all this time.

Any ideas?

Books & Comics / MWOM? Argh! Late? and Walking Dead?
12 January, 2007, 12:05:45 PM
One for the hive mind- or at least for those that are buying the Panini Marvel reprints. MWOM #51 appears to be ridiculously late. Should've been in shops the Thursday after xmas, but still hasn't turned up. Is thtis true everywhere? My WHS swears they haven't stopped stocking it, but as yet... nowt. Am I alone?

And... Does anyone know the release date for Walking Dead vol 6? Definately the best comic of the last year (or however long it's been going). 2000ad could learn a thing or two about maintaining a strip over a long period from this.

Er- a few months ago a horror graphic novel came out that was only available through the website of the creators- who were both, I think "2000ad guys". Can't remember what it was called, or who it was by, but it may have been advertised on the back of the prog.

16 February, 2006, 04:39:39 AM
...well, my comics colection is anyway. Well, nearly.

I don't often post here, as I tend to get into "heated debates" with people, but I had to pop up and shout a very big woohoo.

Thanks to the wonders of ebay, I've just completed my 2000ad collection. The remaining two progs I needed are now won. One is paid for and shoul dbe with me in short course, the other is about to be paid for and will hopefully arrive next week.

That's it then- all the progs, all the Megs, all the specials, postermags, annuals... the lot.

Except a few issues of JD:LoTF, Scream!, US JD:LoTL and JD. Oh, and Extreme #6 and the railway station alternative prog 2005.

I am very, very happy.

Now, what's the betting next week's double cover (preordered from my newsie, proves to be impossible to get, or arrives torn...?)

My wife despairs of me.

Help! / Isolated, missing stuff.
08 January, 2005, 05:58:54 PM
Old board member returns. Shock horror. Ah, but he wants something. Ohhh, I see.

Am now living in the arse-end of nowhere. Hence, unable to get some of the stuff that used to fall into my hands with ease off the shelves. Namely:

Extreme-  The Mach One issue AND the latest one.
Prog 2005: Victoria Station Giveaway edition.

I phoned Rebellion about the Extreme Editions- and they are happy to send me them... with an additional ?6.95 each for postage! Are they delivering them by hand? Care of Madonna? Sigh.

If anyone can help with the above comics, I will pay in advance.

Could do with some help, and, as I was recently told by the WHSmiths magazine lady that she was stopping stocking the Meg due to poor sales- and then went and bought three copies to bump it up a bit- I am feeling like I've done my bit for the cause and would be very grateful for some aid.

Any responses would be appreciated.

...well, kinda.

Off work with the lurgi today, so watching meaningless telly. Some Russain 17 year old girl "has xray eyes", just like a certain Mr. S. Dog. They had her in the studio diagnosing ailments, and very bizarre it was too.

No one asked the obvious question of 'does she come from anywhere near Chernobyl?' though.

Note:

+++ and no, I don't know if it's bollocks or not, but being as sceptical is the next man, I'll only believe it when I read about it in the Fortean Times. Er... +++

General / Thrills in Feb, but not new ones
15 January, 2004, 04:16:44 PM
Right then. Mentioning Westminster comic marts in another thread has made me nostalgic for the past. Especially the days when you could walk into various comic shops around London and pick up whole collections of backprogs that were actually out on display, like the Amercian comics, in boxes, there, in the shop. I remember buying my bezzy mate a page of Ron Smith's original art for 'The Black Plague' for his birthday, from a shop in central London.

Anyway.

Point is, you don't seem to be able to do this anymore. I still have some gaps in my collection and am soon to have the opportunity to fill them. My lady is going over to see her family in Canada for a month, along with our son, and so I will have a whole month where my morning post is not checked and vetted and anything that looks suspiciously like comics tutted at, causing an argument about money for the rest of the week.

So- Does anyone here know of any shops in the UK (comicshops, secondhand shops, junk shops, bookshops etc) that have boxes of pre-prog 30 2000ads, Action, Tornado or Battle for sale, that I can either visit during that month or do some mail order business with?

And yes, David, I know I didn't buy those Battles I made noises about. Sorry my friend, I've ben doing 65 hour weeks and earning very little, so the combination of knackeredness and poverty have stopped me. That changes from now.

Aside from the Battles and Actions, I have about 30 items I need to get to complete my collection, and would rather like to do so while she's away. Simple as that.

Anyway, many thanks in advance for any help. I go now to watch this thread sink to the bottom of the message board and then fall off...
