Welcome to the board / Re: Hello

Oh my blinking flip! That's fantastic. And for your next trick you will make me one- and one each for my children. And one for my wife while you're about it. And my mum, dad, and everyone I've ever met.

That's excellent. I so want one.

Ah, Christopher Tookey! Yes, the man is mad. But he's been at it for years. My parents have always read the Daily Mail- and I remember my mum's sheer panic at the impending release of Silence of the Lambs, because Tookey had informed her it would undoubtedly lead to a widespread glut of serial murder in the UK. Tookey is thick, bigoted, an absolute fuckhead and therefore the perfect Daily Mail film critic.

Books & Comics / Re: Must read comics.
28 November, 2010, 02:29:16 PM
It's hard to do this without it just being 'here are ten comics i like'.
So with that in mind, here are ten comics i like:
The Walking Dead
Requiem Vampire Knight
Charley's War
From Hell
Mezolith
Scalped
Northlanders
Grandville
Romita Snr/Lee Spidey
Millar/Hitch Ultimates

That's outside of 2000AD, obviously.

Books & Comics / Re: The 30 comics you should be reading
28 November, 2010, 11:36:13 AM
As a young teenager, i used to get Film Review- but gave up because i literally didnt care one jot what martin scorcese or woody allen or ken loach were doing. My interest in film lies entirely in the horror genre, and as such i moved onto Fango, Fear, Dark Side, etc, where the writers were at least informed and speaking in context. Latterly, i buy no film magazines at all, and the Meg reviews are as close as i get to film jornalism. I'm way too old and cranky to be interested in what someone else thinks about movies.

I'm afraid i associate Empire with wanky twenty-something tossers, ikea shelving groaning with blu-rays and a love of mainstream cinema. Ive never bought an issue, but have read it in waiting rooms and it's always been pointless. So as such, im not going to put any importance on a list of the first thirty comics the writer could remember/ googled/ bought that month.
Very little british stuff, no 2000AD, no european beyond tintin and asterix, the usual 'worthy' stuff like Persepolis- blah.
And just once i'd like to read a review of Watchmen that said 'im sure it's great, but in all honesty i've never got all the way through it without skipping loads, because it's very dull'.

Film & TV / Re: Valley of Gwangi on today
28 November, 2010, 08:07:02 AM
Due to sheer desperation and frustration at my kids i put gwangi on (dvd) after tea last night. They bloody loved it! Who needs badly-thought-out cgi, when you've got ray harryhausen's hands manipulating your rubber and james franciscus being a heroic scumbag- a proto han solo. Gwangi was my favourite film when i was little- pre star wars- and i cant have seen it in over thirty years. It was brilliant therefore, to find it's just as fantastic as i remembered, AND that my boys loved it too.

Trying to entertain my hyperactive kids... Who dont seem to understand that just because there was a slight flurry earlier on, that doesnt mean they can go sledging as yet. I will also be worrying about my wife, who is currently on her way to Torquay for a show, and being Canadian, doesnt understand she's likely to get stuck if more than a millimeter of snow falls anywhere between here and there.
And fighting off the beginnings of a cold (that will be nasty, i can tell) and nursing an aching back because i stupidly fell asleep on the sofa last night.
Muttergrumble.

Website and Forum / Re: This user is currently ignored
27 November, 2010, 08:58:09 AM
My usage of the ignore button is limited to those people who, 2000AD connection aside, i know that 'in real life' i would loathe, due to them being- in my view- arrogant stommheads with no people skills. And even then i feel bad because, doing what i do for a living, i realise the chances are this is simply indicative of some developmental disability or other. If i can cope with some of the most physically and verbally challenging individuals you're ever likely to meet 'in real life', i should be able to do so here. But maybe i just dont want to.

The trouble is, as i may have mentioned, i mostly access the board through my phone- and the ignore function doesnt apply to the mobile version. So 99% of the time, i see it all anyway.

Given that Rebellion's acquisition of 2000AD has been so successful, especially with regard to the trades, is there any chance of the company similarly acquiring other beloved ipc/fleetway properties with a view to getting them back into print?

An American Werewolf In London: (by my friend tony, a couple of years ago) "i hated it because the title gave it away. I like horror films where you dont know what the monster is, going in- like The Howling. That could have been about anything."
