Mardroid: When it comes to The Apocalypse War,  the term "doubling up" takes on whole new perverse layers of meaning! (progs, eagles, titans twice, idw series,  idw hardback,  hachette tester,  hachette new one,  case files...  have I forgotten any? :-\)

Mine have arrived,  and they are gorgeous. Having spines really makes a difference doesn't it!  Thanks so much,  and put me down for whatever you print next,  sight unseen.

Film & TV / Re: Last movie watched...
02 December, 2014, 01:45:27 PM
Some film about a heavily-armed supercop,  starring him off Star Trek and a blonde bit with mindreading powers.
I stuck it on because the kids had been bugging me about it for ages,  and their mother is away.  Warnings were given in advance, but both were still enthusiastic,  so it got the green light.

Both enjoyed,  although little one didn't quite understand why MC1 looked so "boring". "They still have smartphones!" he laughed,  as Peach Trees cits snap away at the three bodies in the atrium.  He didn't like the uniforms,  or the lack of flying cars,  and tutted when it began with HASC chasing a van and not a mopad or similar.  Eldest was more forgiving,  rationalising it as "an alternative universe like Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions" and spent the movie ticking off references to the comics,  picking up even on 'Krysler's Mark' and making me very proud that he very obviously pores over the casefiles as much as I did the original weeklies when I was his age.
Both thought "...is an automatic fail" was hilarious and have been using it as a catchprase this morning before school.
On the whole,  they enjoyed it, and with all the usual parental worries about the language and violence (and the Anderson sex bit) talked about before and after,  both thought it a shame there wasn't a Dredd2.

Off Topic / Re: They're officially on my list

Facebook users who, upon seeing a picture someone has posted of a famous person/ comic character, feel the need to post that person's name. "Thor.", for example. Doubly so if it lacks an exclamation mark. I can just about accept an exclamatory "Thor!", as a mark of their excitement/ appreciation of said character, but that full stop screams "I must compulsively say what I see". Keeeeeel them.

News / Re: The Daily Dredds Vol 1 hardcover

Yeah,  it's lovely.  A bit out of my price range this week due to Zenith and MiracleMan vol2, but it's pencilled in.

It did feel a bit "loose" with regards to the binding,  but I guess that's due to the format and weight distribution when being handled.

Other Reviews / Re: Winter Special
06 November, 2014, 05:44:54 AM
Ordered a couple of copies in from my local newsie, one for me and one for the eldest,  but have only just gotten round to reading,  due to reasons.  So yesterday while waiting at the doctor I read the special, last week's prog and this week's.  Dr diagnosed TPO and sent me home with a copy of Batman to bring my levels  back down.  That last bit is untrue.

Very good special,  much more enjoyable than the Summer one (which did little for me I'm sad to say). Highlight was The Alienist,  which did indeed read like a Dr Who pitch but which also seemed to have slipped out of an old issue of Lion.  This is a Very Good Thing and I eagerly await more.

All strips were scrotnig,  nothing brought it down,  new artist on Anderson paints pretty pictures that messed with my head a bit.

More please Tharg.  Hardback annuals too,  if you're feeling generous.  And some bubblegum taped to the front of the next jumping on prog, for the full retro experience.

The boy read his last week and I made him keep quiet as I wanted it unspoiled by eleven year old enthusiasm or cynicism.  Will find out what he thought when he gets up today,  but he got the new Diary of a Wimpy Kid book yesterday and is ten pages off the end of Bova's Return To Mars,  so getting sense out of him will be difficult I predict.

It was mentioned in a thread about the collection over on a dr who forum. Not an official line or anything,  Just someone implying that they had the first four and five was now due.

I subbed from the off,  have never received a subscription number, got #1 weeks ago,  and not a sausage since.  Not even an email.  And today I read elsewhere on the web that #5 is in shops,  or due now.

Books & Comics / Re: How do you read your comic?
28 October, 2014, 03:40:19 PM
Front to back once Ive read the Nerve Centre and the letters page in that order (on the sacred and holy days that there is one). If there's a strip I'm skipping, such as Black Suck, Brass Sun or Red Seas, I will still glance at the pages and try a panel or two.

And, apropos of nothing, I usually read mine in the bath.

Haha!  Really liked that. I was erring on the side on caution,  but that looks absolutely mad.  Amazing how some gratuitous skin ripping can change a boy's mind.  Cant wait to see the whole thing now.
