Prog / Re: Prog 1727 - Shakara: The Final Chapter
29 March, 2011, 09:18:10 AM
Grrrrrrrreat prog and no mistake.

Shakara managed to end in a hugely satisfying manner. The only thing that didn't quite work for me was the countdown towards the end of the series. When it's first introduced it barely ticks down for about 3 weeks, then he zooms across the galaxy and in the last part it's suddenly nearly at zero.

Other than that non-complaint I have no complaints. Whole issue was a doozy, and I'm enjoying Dandridge now (it didn't click for me during the last run).

It did make things a bit surreal. It's a really funny show, and I'm sure if any of the protesters had actually watched it they wouldn't come away offended. Apparently Herring asked one of them if he didn't think it was maybe wrong to be condemning something without seeing it, and they came back with a weird 'you don't have to see a child being abused to know child abuse is wrong' argument, which is quite a sensible thing to compare to a stand up comedy show obviously. A chunk of the show deals with the emails he gets complaining about it, and just how wrongheaded some of the logic is behind them.

At the end of the day all they've done is get the show extra publicity, which was nice of them :)

I didn't realize one of them is Jena Malone from Donnie Darko, didn't recognize her at all.

My other half really wants to see it (I've gone a but lukewarm about it after seeing the Rotten Tomatoes score) so am off to see it Saturday morning. Am hoping even if it's the turkey it's being painted as that the totty will at least hold my attention.

Fantastic Mr Fox, which I enjoyed a lot. I'd actually forgotten that as a kid I adored the book and read it over and over again, but it all came flooding back watching this. It was also pretty interesting how much it felt like one of Wes Anderson's live action films, despite being about stop motion animals.

Because this weekend was brilliant, played a really enjoyable gig on Friday, went to see Richard Herring's brilliant Christ On A Bike show Saturday (complete with christian protesters at the venue!) and had a super-chilled Sunday with the prog and the meg. That's what I call a successful weekend :)

Zombieland. I'd seen it but Amy hadn't, we had a good laugh. It's a fun film, not as witty or funny as it aims to be, but it's got it's moments and overall it's an enjoyable romp.

Passed my SQL midterm exam! Probably not that big a deal, but I've found I really struggle with SQL for some reason, and I was consistently failing the revision quizzes. I hate it, so very glad I won't need to do a resit.

This has warmed my cockles, good news!

Sounds like you've got a real winner there! I have trouble just convincing my girlfriend to dress up as someone who enjoys my company.

Creative Common / 'Baby In The Bump' art project.
22 March, 2011, 06:45:40 PM
This is my friend's art, she does a variety of stuff, all of it pretty dang awesome (some of her paintings are stunning). This particular project is a series of light-hearted pieces about pregnancy and parenthood and the anxieties involved.

She does print runs and sells them, but has a kickstarter pledge account set up to try and raise the funds for a larger print run, so if you like it and want to support it then you could always give her a pledge.

Here's her website (there's some cracking stuff on there for all tastes):

And if you do fancy pledging some support here's the Kickstarter link:

Music / Re: Discovered / rediscovered music thread
22 March, 2011, 02:37:52 PM
Tool are my favorite band hands down, but whenever they release an album I'm usually so enamoured with it that I don't really touch the previous albums much, preferring to just live inside the latest album until they're good enough to grant me another one (usually a few years down the line).

So for that reason sticking on 'Lateralus' today has blown my mind afresh and counts as rediscovered music for me. An absolute masterpiece.

Bit of an interesting night this, it's being put on by Glasgow PodcArt, kicks off at 8pm and there's gonna be 3 live bands and DJs until 3am. The twist is that each band has to cover a track by each of the other bands as well as a cover of their choice. Cue frantic rehearsals. It's entirely free too, so if you're in Glasgow and want a late pint and some tunes then you can't go wrong.

Ourselves, You Already Know, are playing along with Other People and Carnivores, and as an added bonus Jamie from Oh You Dancer has done an exclusive remix that incorporates all 3 bands and sounds awesome. Anyone through the door gets the download code for that.

PodcArt have all the info, and previews and interviews with all the bands throughout the week (our interview is up already, suffice to say we come across as the imbeciles that we are).
