Seems like A Serbian Film will be heavily cut for UK release:

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2010/08/26/the-bbfc-get-heavy-on-a-serbian-film-and-i-spit-on-your-grave-give-frightfest-a-flesh-wound/

Still haven't watched it, but if the Frightfest guys are championing it that suggests to me its actually pretty good and not the exploito-trash it sounds like. Have chatted to Jones at the Glasgow Frightfest and he really knows his stuff, and while they'll occasionally show something he doesn't like he's not shy to give his opinion on it. I'm more intrigued by the day about this movie.

Dredd Commission for @Mike_Donachie on Twitpic - bic biro and photoshop.

re: Judge Fish, I'll allow the fish, sans bowl (who's to say whether it's an actual fish or comedy prop fish?)

Dredd holding fish up disdainfully pinched between fingers would be a fun little drawing...

Brilliant! Will drop you a mail in the next couple of days, thanks for the reply!

Help! / Re: insomnia

I made changes to my routine:

- Stopped drinking Tea and Coffee after 6pm at night.
- Avoided drinking alcohol just before going to bed
- Moved as much as I could out of the bedroom so that bedroom became very specifically a space to sleep
- Started a bedtime routine; doing the same things every night so my body knew it was getting ready to sleep.
- Writing a To Do list before I went to bed
- When in bed, stifling the urge to move even if I was having trouble sleeping
- If having trouble sleeping, getting up and doing something else for half an hour (watch an episode of TV, read comic etc.) Then get back to bedtime routine

and it all worked remarkably well with no need for chemicals of any kind.

Of course, now I'm married with kids I'm so permanently knackered that I could snort a bucketful of coke at 2355 and still be asleep by midnight.

This is all great advice, I used to have really horrible insomnia (which apparently was a symptom of stress and depression at the time) and these are more or less the steps I took and now I sleep fine most nights.

The only nights I have problems I find are when I get ready for bed and then sit up for a couple of hours or more playing videogames. Means I slip into bed with my mind pretty stimulated by the games and as I don't have that teeth and PJs routine to get me settled.

Also they say that if you're going to get up and do something for half an hour you need to make it something really dull, like housework. If you make it something you enjoy you risk subconciously treating it as a reward for not falling asleep. Apparently. If that fails just wank furiously.

Turns out my other half is quite into getting something to hang on the wall, but she is insisting that Judge Fish is involved in some way. I'm now trying to convince her he's a character and not a prop...

I too am wary of getting caught up in 'the hype', especially when I read this:

Quote from: Radbacker on 25 July, 2010, 03:09:40 AMBear McCreary (BSG) on music.

Every silver lining must have a cloud, such is the way of things.

I suppose it'll have lots of that annoying shakycam, too.  If you want to look for things that'll put you off, you shall find them, but in the long run optimism serves you better.

Is McCreary generally unliked? I actually thought the BSG music was fantastic, and one of its stand-out features.

From the imdb comments on A Serbian Film, a lot of people seem to be saying its actually surprisingly good, and that the violence is generally too over the top to be genuinely disturbing. Still not sure if I want to risk it though.

For me, absolutely. I was pretty blown away by the big reveal and raved dribblingly to my girlfriend about how great it was while she looked at me with a strange mixture of pity and encouragement on her face.

I know it was a trick Tharg had used before, but I missed that story so Malone was totally out of leftfield for me and and I can still vividly recall being quite exhilirated by it all. Sorry!

It might be harder than I thought for me to convince Mrs Monkey that this is more important than furniture, but I'll keep on the case...

For those, like me, wanting to track this down, there is a new DVD coming out in the next few months, not sure what it adds to older DVDs but most of those are not so easy to get hold of and are increasingly expensive:

Yeah, lovefilm only had the "reserve" option instead of rent, so they must be planning to get the new one at some point soon.

I'll be honest, I actually stopped reading the synopsis half way through, figured I'd got the gist! I'm a bit of a gorehound, and if someone tells me a movie is really disturbing that'll generally encourage me to watch it (dunno what that says about me), but I doubt I could sit through this with my mind intact. Saying that, I don't know how its presented in film, but I really can't imagine how they got away with some of the stuff that's described there.

Possession on the other hand sounds interesting, think I'll lovefilm that one.

Think I'm most definitely going to go for this PJ, we just bought a new flat and would be nice to something classy to hang on the walls when we move in! Will take me a few days to agonize over what character I'd like though...

Right, I don't normally go for spoilers, but when a friend tells me something is the sickest film EVAH and that I should never ever watch it I'm gonna check the plot synopsis on wiki. And....fucking hell.

Sorry if I'm being dense here, but is there some connection to The Losers that I'm missing?

I see Anderson as more your Scarlett Johansson stock

That dull?
Looks wise, totally. I don't know anything about her personally, but she could learn lines, and act - Job done

She was a plank of wood in Iron Man II
I've not seen it. She's good in Ghost World.

Round my house we call her Drama Plank, in reference to the fact that Keanu Reeves has always been known as Action Plank. Now she's expanding into action though, so I guess she's a diverse plank. Looks cracking though.
