Aha! That explains why I was brought to mind of the late Brian Glover when I saw that photo.

The Emperor & the Assassin is more of your gigantic chinese war machine, chariots and siege machines rather than wire-fu.

There's some cool martial arts work but it's subtle, more based in reality since the story is a telling of the first chinese emperor who united the kingdoms.

I wouldn't say TE&TA is arthouse. It's too lush and epic for that. Think of Gladiator rather than Farewell My Concubine (which was made by the same diector).

TAXI and its sequel have been out on DVD for ages I picked them both up cheap a while ago. TAXI is pretty good. TAXI 2 is a lesser experience, but has some okay bits.

I can't recommend The Emperor & the Assassin highly enough. I got it on import a few years ago and it's still my favourite film ever. Miles better than the Crouching Tiger nonsense. I think www.play.com have the region 2 version for an attractive price.

As for Dredd vs Death. I'll buy it for the PC. Hopefully they will include tools to mod the game, as has been mentioned.

In my opinion ?25 for 10 b&w issues is criminal. I can't imagine how anyone thought that would be an atractive offer. For ?250 you could probably buy the original 100 progs!

It bemuses me why Rebellion don't produce DVDs of back issues. I know there was much talk of it in the newsgroup a few years ago. Two words: space saving!

My suggestion would be 100 progs to a DVD, selling for about ?20. Maybe come out with 4 or so volumes initially, then release a new volume every six months, stopping when they get to within a couple of years of the current issues.

It could be promoted with a free DVD in the Meg offering a sample of the content which should be arranged much like the Mad Magazine collection with less frills, and easier navigatability.

Continually promoted in 2000ad and the Meg, along with occasional ads in SFX and other genre mags, I can see it being successful.

I believe scanning of old content has been underway for some time. You'd have the cost of writing a front end for viewing the progs (using something like Director or Authorware), and that'd be it. Burn a DVD, slap a label on, print a cover. Bada-boom-badda-bing.

Or perhaps a news-stand publication. ?10 every month, a slim mag with first rate reprint stories, along with a DVD of 52 issues. It should probaby be boxed & shrink-wrapped (other mags have done this), with attractive art of the front and details of the content on the back so people know what they're getting for their money.

Alternatively, have an online repositry of back issues. A yearly subscription would allow you to browse all 2000ad and Meg content up until about 5 years ago. Real world subscribers to either or both publications would get an attractive discount.

I think it reads a damn sight better than the text stories we used to get, and even the Virgin novels from 10 years ago. Rennie is obviously at ease in the Dredd World and tells the tale with an eyebrow raised and tongue ever so slightly in cheek, along with the obligitory random acts of bizarre violence (the story not Mr Rennie).

I will be buying the book, and expect nothing more from it than a decently told Dredd tale constricted by whatever hackneyed, ill-thought-out storyline Rebellion have imposed.

WANT!

GIMMIE!

I can't get the Freddy vs Jason sample either, not that I'm interested in that. The /pdf/ directory exists, but either the files aren't there or there's a whole lotta misnaming going on.

fix it. want. gimmie. etc.

It was never the same when they replaced the Pigsy actor. :(

Did The Young Ones do a Monkey skit?

Mike as Tripitaka
Vivian as Pigsy
Neil as Sandy
Rik as Monkey

Anyone remember this or am I delusional? Or do I just think I'm delusional? Or am I actually delusional, believe that I'm not, but still suspect that I am?

I used to think that Judge Fear was female, must've been the dress-esque cloak thing.

Only the other day I was thinking it'd be interesting if Mortis or Fire were female.

And while we're talking about the Dark Judges. Does anyone else think they may have been the inspiration for the Cenobites?

Stegasaurus! That's a man's dinosaur. Spiky friend of the humble Triceratops. I had an airfix kit. I think I've still got it.

1978/79 Dinosaurs stickers album. Those were the days. Still got mine. I'm only missing ten or so stickers. I'll get them one day. Bloody kids. Don't know they're born. I remember when plastic was plastic. And Stanley Baxter specials, Airfix, Barbapapa, The Leopard from Lime Street, Space Hoppers, Tiswas, Proper Action Men, Itsy & Bitsy, Guy Fawkes masks, Now Get Out Of That, Trebor Double Agents, Funny Feet, John Noakes, Armchair Thriller, The Water Margin, toy guns, Crackerjack, Top Trumps, Wilf Lunn, Battle of the Planets... etc.

Mega-City Rumnble, one of McMahon's finest, appeared in the 1982 Dredd Annual. It was reperinted in The Complete JD Special Editon #1. It may also have turned up in  a glossy format collection for the American market.

These blocks all died:

John Wayne
Jimmy Clitheroe
Sam Snead
Benny Hill
Indira Ghandi
Linda Carter

Big Tharg presiding over his most popular characters has precedent in the covers of annuals and specials. It's only surprising that there haven't been many more covers like that.

As for composition, in both cases, it's simply the most logical place to put a big Tharg if the title logo is on the left. The slight angle of Tharg and Dredd are logical composition descisions, and suggest action.

I saw it myself a couple of years ago, and bloody diabolical it was too! I no longer have a copy, but here's a couple of links with info and screen captures.
