Ah right - that wasn't obvious to me (maybe I'm just thick), but nice functionality, Wake.

Hmmm - similar, but not an aid to navigating the site, only to viewing covers.

How about a toggle switch so clicking goes to big-cover-image to to site-page (like my right-hand drop-down, perhaps).

I know what you mean about limiting to 50 covers per page - my page works fine for high-speed connections, even of a couple of hundred thumbnails, but the large-thumbnails and full-size-images options really *need* you to have a local cache of the cover images on a hard drive or CD.

Which is what I wrote the page for, after all (as something to use those cover images I foolishly downloaded for).

Yeah, I think I got a bit technical with the description.

The basic thing is it allows you to browse the site by clicking on thumbnails of covers. And, if you have a slow connection, it might be too slow to use.

It's also designed to work on a CD or on your hard drive, which speeds it up a *lot* (I downloaded all the cover images from the site - the whole lot only half fills a CD, leaving plenty of room for the site's database, should Rebellion be thinking of a future free gift...).

Website and Forum / Graphical Interface to web site
27 July, 2002, 03:24:57 AM
I was browsing this site, looking for an issue, when it occurred to me that a nice graphical interface - using the mag covers - would be a good addition.

So I decided to write one, for my own convenience.

Not much use for people on slow net connections, I know (cos it's very graphically top-heavy), but if you have a high speed connection, you might find this useful.

The basic idea is that you choose the type of comic you want from the drop-down list at the top left. It then loads the covers up for you and you can click on them to either view a full-size cover pic or view the content of that issue (use the drop down list at the top-right to select what happens when you click a cover).

The top-middle middle drop down list lets you choose whether the thumbnails displayed are small, large or full-sized images. It defaults to small thumbnails which take you to the contents of the comic when you click on them.

I dunno how long this file will remain on the server, but feel free to save a copy or upload it anywhere you like.

The latest issue of the megazine and prog would need updating in the code whenever a new issue comes out if you want to be able to browse that issue too, and if you've downloaded and saved covers from the site then you can use those instead of re-downloading the files (instructions are in the menu.html file).

Enjoy

Roy

I went to Sussex Uni in Falmer (just outside Brighton).

We did put on a play, as students, at Brighton Poly's "Sallis Benny" theatre, though (the Poly is now called Brighton Uni, of course).

When you say "studying comics"...?

Ugh! Just noticed my typo what you were referring to - "I don't like in Brighton any more"

For the record: I *adore* Brighton. Lovely town.

David died? Aw that's such a shame - he was a lovely guy. I remember going in once and finding a couple of dozen graphic novels I wanted and not having the cash on me.

I asked him to put them to one side until pay day (which would be a week or so later), but he gave me the lot there and then and just asked me to drop off the cash when I got paid (which I did, before anyone asks). He even gave me a discount for quantity.

Now *that's* customer service.

I still go down to Brighton every now and then, SiG - I lived there for a decade. It's just that, these days, when we drive down there it's generally of an evening, for a restaurant or a club, and so comic shopping isn't an option at that time of night ;-(

There's a lovely shop in Brighton (on Sydney Street, I think) called "David's Book Exchange". They stock 2nd hand and remaindered graphic novels & paperbacks - don't let "remaindered" put you off, as they often have out-of-print or recently-printed graphic novels in there. And very cheap.

Fer'instance, I picked up Buck Godot, Judge Child 1 & 2, a dozen "Aliens" GNs and the four Sam Slade books (one in hardback) there for two or three quid each a couple of years ago.

(disclaimer - I don't like in Brighton any more, and I last popped into David's about a year ago).

There're probably similar shops all over the place, but I dunno if there's a directory of them anywhere on the Web.

OK, I admit it - I just pointed that program at the site and downloaded the covers.

Anyways, when it finished I noticed that there's a cover scan missing from the site - there's no large ("hires") scan of prog 1281.

Well, at least that accomplished something kinda-useful, I s'pose...

(I read all the annuals, specials, megazines & DC Dredds as I went along - though I'm still awaiting receipt of the missing 20 "Lawman of the Future" comics as I write)

A TCU? That's a but extreme.

I mean, simply because I've absorbed 25 years' worth of Thrill Power (progs, specials, annuals, megazines and all) in the space of nine months is no reason to suspect any funting side-effects, is it?

My vote goes for Abelard Snazz as well (same reasons, and even though I've only just re-read them). They were some of the few strips I remembered from first time around with 2000AD.

Excellent stuff.

Roy

PS/ For anyone who's keeping count, I'm now about a year behind everyone else, having read from prog 4 through to the mid-1200s so far. I'm wondering what to do with myself when I reach the end (my partner says I should just start all over again at prog 4, but I suspect I'll rest awhile first).

The article below might be interesting in this connection.

While I don't subscribe to the if-it-ain't-available-legitimately-let's-bootleg-it camp, I do, frankly, have sympathy for them.

What is the "true worth" of a comic?

Example - I paid a quid a piece (well, $1.50) on eBay for the complete run of "Starlord" in near mint condition, with free gifts still attached.

I then dug out my old, battered Starlords

Personally, I reckoned the amount I paid was reasonable, while the amount that the ones I sold were sold for was ridiculous (I started the bidding at two pounds for the three, I think).

This isn't uncommon, by the way - I often paid around 15-20p each for 2000AD progs and a pound for specials (I generally bought large batches) and then found, to my amazement, that the duplicates sold on for anything from a pound to a tenner each, and more than paid for the ones I've kept (which is all progs and specials and annuals, except for 2000AD progs 1-3, mostly in excellent condition).

Oh, and as an addendum - I've got a shedload of duplicates still left over. About 756 comics and 7 annuals. There's a detailed breakdown of comics and condition at the link below.

Offers, anyone?

*That* was the free gift? Bloody hell - I thought it was just an advert insert too. Ah well, you live and learn.

Can't complain too much, though, I suppose, given the nice pleasant free audio CD which was given away not too long ago.
