Ugh. Also, if I can just express my disgust at some arsehole on lovefilm. Was going to chuck Never Let Me Go on my list and made the HUGE mistake of looking down the list of reviews. Some hugely inconsiderate, bottom-feeding scumbag posted a one liner basically saying it was shit and describing what the whole film was about. So that'll be pointless now I guess. It's like bloody Homer on his way out of Empire  ::)

Tit. What a rubbish thing to do.

I'd still give it a watch if I were you as you'll still enjoy it even armed with knowledge of the plot. It's not the sort of film with a "DA-DUM!" plot twist at the end, the subtleties are leaked out gradually in a very organic way. I had a rough idea of the story before I watched it and still enjoyed it.

Andrew Garfield and Carey Mulligan are excellent and the screenplay was written by our mate Alex Garland.

Zombo (it's a laff riot), Shakara and Nikolai Dante.

And I'd like to second everybody else's suggestions.

General / Re: Best way to revist classic Dredd

Hi TPO and welcome back.

I'd say the Case Files is definitely the best way to go. They're cheap (about a tenner each on Amazon) readily available and really chunky. As far as the comments regarding bad repro and all black and white printing, most of these older stories were originally printed in black and white anyway with the occasional colour centre spread. The later, all colour Dredds are re-printed in later Case Files in full colour on glossy paper.

There are a few instances of bad reproduction but they're few and far between. Apparently Rebellion are fixing some of these in the more recent printings as well.

As for the stories you mention, the second Case Files collection contains The Cursed Earth saga (plenty of Satanus in there!) and The Day The Law Died (Judge Cal) making it real value for money. Block War and The Apocalypse War can be found in volume 5. Also, The Judge Child quest is in volume 4 and Oz (the Supersurf epic starring Chopper) is in volume 10.

The complete Dark Judges collection has just been released in a small 'manga' sized digest volume (as has The Cursed Earth and The Day The Law Died) so if you don't fancy jumping straight into the Case Files, these might be a good way to dip your toe in.

Hope you have fun re-living those classics but don't forget that 2000 AD and the Judge Dredd Megazine are still going and still brilliant. The recent Dredd epic, Day of Chaos, has been one of the best Dredd storylines in years and is being released in three collected volumes throughout next year.

I can excuse the film a few liberties with Mega City law.

In the comics, there is no real death penalty except under extreme circumstances - in the world of the film it's a necessary measure.

Similarly, the Judges wouldn't use 'torture' to extract a confession (although some of the scenes we've witnessed featuring Dredd interrogating prisoners have been pretty close to a form of torture - particularly during the Total War story during which a man is drugged to death during a failed atempt to extract information), but, again, in the world of the film it is deemed to be within the law, particularly given the circumstances Dredd finds himself in.

The law is more brutal in the film but so is MC-1 in general.

Jeezus, I wish I'd never said anything now. Some grexnix is lambasting poor Molch-R about the printing error on Facebook and he's using my film/album analogy. I hope it's not a forumite.

Alright, I'll stop being a whingeing twat about it. The damage is already done.

It was a good Dredd despite the printing problems and the rest of the prog was really good too. Brass Sun is the show stopper at the moment.

Just picked up my prog from the newsagents. The pixellation in Dredd hasn't been sorted. Every page of Dredd looks like a jpeg that hasn't properly loaded.

Oh dear. That's not good.

Sorry if I sound like a grouch amongst all the 'Hey, it's just a little mistake!' comments but if I'd bought a DVD and a fifth of it was pixellated, or I'd bought an album and a fifth of it was spoiled with distortion, I'd take it back to the shop. So would everybody else on this forum.

I know it's only happened once but still...

Anderson not having a white helmet, seeing as she was a rookie...

There, I said it.  :-X

Thank you!

As has been said before on the film thread (by MichaelVK I think), it would make no sense in practical terms to telegraph to all the perps, hoods and punks which one is the senior and which the junior. That would do nothing but create targets. Makes much more sense to have rookies indistinguishable from full Judges.

Even if the fact that Dredd is a clone is covered in a sequel, I wonder if there'll be any mention of Rico? Would that be seen as unnecessarily complicating the story?

It would make more sense to have Fargo the one who ultimately went bad (and have that covered up by Justice Department), leaving Dredd to ponder his genetic inheritence.

Yes! I'd buy that.

And while you're at it, do ABC Warriors and Slaine in the same format. You can switch to colour for the later stuff like the Dredd and Nemesis Case Files did.

It was a happy coincidence that prog 1800 came out just as the film was released and Chris Weston's excellent Dredd one-off is exactly the kind of thing to hook new/lapsed readers.

Now would be a good time to run a month's worth of similar cool Dredd one parters, light on continuity, heavy on classic Dredd ass kickery. That would get people to stick around.

I've been doing my bit to raise the profile of the prog and Meg by going into the WH Smiths in Leeds train station in the morning and moving all the copies of both comics onto eye level shelves, covering Nuts, Loaded and all that other shite. Probably annoys the hell out of the staff but I don't care!

I suppose that while the overwhelming feeling for me and the missus was "What the hell is this rubbish?", it did entertain us in some way because we couldn't stop laughing at the silly bollocksness of it all.

The ending really did us in. During the battle with the scream-punks in their punk-buses and punk-cars, when vehicles start exploding FOR NO REASON WHATSOEVER and the cliched punk leader, clinging to the roof of badass lady's car, is beheaded whilst crashing through a flaming bus.

His head flies directly into the camera AND HE'S STILL GOING 'RAAAAAAGGGGGHHHHHHH!'. My wife was fucking helpless with laughter.
