Prog / Re: Prog 1753 - Wanted

Another great prog!

The cover was a bit disappointing. Progs 1750-52 has three of the best covers of the year (if not longer) so it was always going to be difficult to live up to those.

Dredd was a nice, dense procedural. Wagner really seems to like being in Maybe's company.

Indigo Prime was fantastic, particularly those last two pages from Bagwell. Grant Morrison could learn a thing or two from these guys...

Angel Zero is old-school thrills and I'm liking it, though it hasn't grabbed me proper yet.

Low Life was another short, sharp shock to the senses. Loved the monster motion capture!

I'm also really liking Ampney Crucis this time around. I've always liked the concept but it never really delivered in the past. This time, however, there's a real sense of 'Anything can happen' and a healthy does of impending doom to boot. I like how it's hinting at tying into Edginton's Stickleback and Red Seas universes: I'm hoping for a Dead Eyes-style shock twist at some point! And the art from Simon Davis is wonderful.

Anyone know what's replacing Indigo Prime for the next two weeks?

Really enjoyed the Meg, yet again!

Wonderful Fegredo cover. More please. Or better yet, strongarm him into doing a Dredd or something along those lines.

Dredd was surprisingly good. Grant's more miss than hit these days, particularly when it comes to Dredd but this one had a nice sting in the tale.

Also a very good Tales from the Black Museum. I usually find this only passable but this was a nice, dense story.

Numbercruncher was fantastic. Along with this and Lilly McKenzie, the 'creator-owned' spots in the Meg have been consistently the strongest thing in the Meg. Sadly, it's replacement - American Reaper - has me worried. I like about half of Mills' output, the other half is the stuff he's done with Langley. It's not an art style I particularly like (I'd rather he go back to his older, painted style than this computerized, fuck-the-frame style he's been doing for the last few years). I hope to be pleasantly surprised but just in case, does anyone know how long I have to endure it?

Cursed Earth Koburn was surprisingly the dullest thing in the Meg. Next ep seems like it might actually be about something!

The articles were all good to great. Really enjoyed the creator Interrogations (as usual). How about one with Steve Yeowall (or has that been done already!?)? The Western article was ok, and I'm still liking these film reviews.

As for the Mercy Heights supplement: oh, dear. Found myself enjoying the first two volumes, especially Kev Walker's art on the first few eps and it's always nice to see Trevor Hairsine's work (where's he gone!?! He doesn't seem to have done much for Marvel over the last few years either...). This third volume, however, was poor. Sloppy art and at times unintelligable storytelling. I'm guessing Book 4 is the final few eps of MH, then on to Tor Cyan. Probably enough material from that series to stretch this into a Book 5...

I echo the requests for Black Light and Sancho Panzer from one of the letter writers too! Would like to re-read both those series again, please!

Oh and I'm going to risk a Rigellian hotshot here and suggest Maniac 5. Mainly for the Steve Yeowall robot art!  :D

I agree with one of the latest Meg letter writers with his suggestions of Sancho Panzer and Black Light. Think they'd be a good fit, and more Henry Flint is always a good idea!

Also, how about Glimmer Rats?!

I've never read a Wonder Woman comic in my life but I'll be buying Azzarello and Chiang's comic when it comes out.

Though I did think she looked better in pants!

I think DC printed quite a few of JL and Action Comics. They appear to be able to sort out more pretty fast though perhaps they underestimated slightly just how well it would sell.

Considering the quality of the first 13 books: I think it's been a failure, frankly. The majority of the books are moderate to bad. I don't see new, first-time readers coming back to most of these titles. Maybe that's where the digital will kick in...

I really like that cover. Definitely jumps out at you and grabs your attention, like a good cover should! Agree with the above poster, would love to see a Xmas Tharg Tale or something. Prog 2012!?

A lot of fuss is being made of Swamp Thing, but - I'm trying not to be harsh here...

He's not that great a character, is he? The reason he's held in high esteem is because of the work Alan Moore did on the series 25 years ago, and the reason that series is memorable is precisely because Swamp Thing is a bit of a naff character - Moore took a very limited, hokey concept and did something exciting with it. It just seems like DC are desperately trying to exploit anything that has an association with Moore.

Am I wrong? Has any other writer done anything of note with him since Moore's run came to an end?

I think that's fair. However Moore placed him in such an important role within the DCU that there is potential for more great stories, though you're right in saying very few have delivered since Mooore's day.

Saying that, Scott Snyder is one of DC's best writers. His run on Detective with Jock/Ponticelli (?) was great, and I've heard nothing but good things about American Vampire. The reviews of the new 52 have been full of praise for three titles in particular: Action Comics, Animal Man and Swamp Thing. The naffness of the character doesn't matter so much when it's put in the hands of talented creators. Moore/Totleban/Bisette were the series' greatest moment but I do think Snyder and Paquette have the ability to deliver another seminal take on the character.

That is, if they stick around...

I wasn't a big fan of Batgirl; I actually preferred Batwing! I just don't see the point in having a second red haired crime-fighting Battress.

The comics I've picked up are: Justice League, Action Comics, Swamp Thing, Animal Man and Stormwatch. I intend on getting Batman, Batwoman, Wonder Woman and some others too in the next few weeks.  Some others I've 'read' (*ahem*) to see if I liked but to be honest - with the exception of Batwing and Detective - they were pretty poor and featured some terrible, terrible art that overshadowed any half-decent ideas. Men of War was ok. DC seem to be split between awful 90s nostalgia (JL International, Green Arrow, Hawk & Dove, Static Shock) and Vertigo style comics (Swampy, Animal Man etc.) I don't see many of the former lasting and the latter will be heavily dependent on maintaining the talent on those books.

Very happy to see Lemire and Snyder achieving popular success with their number ones; it's just a pity DC doesn't have the necessary talent to sustain an entire line. Writers like Nick Spencer, Jason Aaron, Rick Remender, Jonathan Hickman and probably Brian Wood now have all jumped ship or signed up to Marvel. On the art side, DC are really lacking both variety and sheer talent. Some of these comics look really bad (probably didn't help that some of the artists were so rushed, or replacements for others who couldn't meet the deadline).

Longevity is the key here. From what I've read, I don't see this working in the long run... unless their digital sales are through the roof.

I think I'm going to enjoy this run of stories!

Brilliant kickoff to the new thrill season () Dredd was fantastic, Low Life brilliant, Crucis epic and Indigo Prime was... well, it was the best of the lot. Next week's new thrill also sounds great. It's been a while now since I've genuinely enjoyed every single story in the prog but I'm very optimistic that this new set of stories will deliver.

Also, it's definitely one of the most visually stunning progs in a while, cover to cover.

Aye, get the lovely omnibus edition. Great value. And I didn't know about that Sean Phillips deal, damn it!

There's actually only been 6 stories/trades so far.  Coward/Lawless are 5 issues each, then a three issue arc called The Dead and the Dying; these are all collected in the omnibus. Bad Night is 4 issues, The Sinners 5 issues and the currently ongoing The Last of the Innocent is 5 issues as well (I think).

It is, in my opinion, one of the best comics of the last ten years.

Why has 3hrillers got that 3 in there? (I really dislike this sort of thing - see also 5ive and L!ve TV) Are these 3 part stories? It's just that I was thinking this entire episode could have been done in one page of a good futureshock.

Maybe they're hoping to try out some new characters/series ideas and if they work out, promote them to a full proper series. It'll take a while to see how these work out, I quite like the idea of 'em anyway.

Great prog. Wonderful seeing Wagner's name in Dredd again and me oh my, was that a cracking start!

Sin/Dex was probably the weakest strip in a very strong prog overall.  It didn't strike me as a first part really, and I couldn't quite remember what happened previously. I really liked the art here though, not generally being a huge fan of Williams' stuff in the last few series of Sin/Dex. That last page in particular is fantastic.

Savage is brilliant. Old Thrills feel wrapped in New Thrills packaging. I prefer this so much more to Mills' ABC Warriors and Slaine.

3rillers was off to a good start, fun stuff.

Zombo. I really liked the first series, wasn't too impressed with the second, but this third got off to a wonderful start. Ewing's script sparkles and actually made me laugh out loud, embarrassingly enough. And Flint's artwork is just disgustingly good.
