An old Dredd one-off, drawn superbly by Cliff Robinson, that dealt with living crash-test dummies who were having horrendous diseases tested on them.

The look of sheer pity that the Robinson droid gave the dummies, and the eventual sacrifice the main character makes, always chokes me up  :'(

(No idea on title or prog, i only read it in an Eagle comics reprint!)

Probably my favourite one-off Dredd. Also the issue where the man turned into a living atom bomb (irradiated during the Apocalypse War) comes back from the Cursed Earth and blows up an evacuated sector house, as the Judges line up to let him pass.

And Bury My Knee at Wounded Heart. And America, of course.

Think Nikolai Dante is the only current thrill that can bring up the same emotions!

Read that the budget was around the $45 million mark. For the sake of comparison, District 9 was $30 million while Marvel stuff like Iron Man/Thor tend to never stray above $150 million. I don't know if marketing budgets fit into those numbers.

District 9 made $37 million in its opening weekend. I imagine the Dredd people are hoping for something like $15-20 million in US alone. Of course that depends on their release strategy; how many screen it opens in etc.  It should do well in international markets too, particularly Europe. The international market is really helping buck up Hollywood at the minute, with stuff like Pirates 4 doing huge numbers abroad but isn't at its best at home in the US.

It is a bit strange he'd be so disaparaging toward his own friend/collaborator.  I actually though the DnA company referred to Danny and Alex. D'oh :(

I like Duncan Jones as a director quite a bit. However, I wouldn't be too enamoured with the idea of Judge Death in a film, not too sure it would work all that well. Garlands 'A Day in the Life' idea does indeed sound like a great first film and will hopefully make for a tough, lean and gritty film that should be able to effectively capture the character and world.

I haven't been following the details on this film all that much so apologies for my naive assumptions in some cases. I'm planning on going to see this film as 'green' as possible; I only know the basic outline so far and I'm going to try and keep it that way! (I'm probably in the wrong thread for that, I know!)

Fair point. That cinematographer quote is interesting. And I'm liking that this film is under Boyle's production company and a Garland script (let's hope he's finally sorted that third-act problem he's always had!) Didn't realize Duncan Jones had been offered the film too, that would have been interesting.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, it'll still be a film in either version and it's only a matter of whether you like to wear sun-glasses in the cinema or not.

The 3D aspect of modern blockbusters has effected the way people make films though, directorial decisions etc. Action scenes are a bloody mess (not that they haven't been a mess for about 10 years now) because they're limited in terms of editing, focus and composition when done in 3D.

I have to wear glasses when I go to the cinema anyway, so putting on a second pair isn't the most enjoyable or comfortable experience!

A pity, it could conceivably do more damage than good at this point by the time it comes out.

I am looking forward to it though, especially the non-3D version  :P

Books & Comics / Re: Any Recommendations?

Criminal and 100 Bullets for crime/noir comics. Criminal is probably my favourite series of the last five years, consistently brilliant.
Blacksad is also fantastic. Scalped is decent too.

Beasts of Burden (who recently had a great crossover with Hellboy), and Guy Davis' The Marquis from Dark Horse. Hellboy and B.P.R.D. are worth checking out.

Daytripper is probably one of the best comics I read this year, all ten issues are collected in one trade paperback at great value.

Safe Area Gorazde from Joe Sacco - it's kind of like comics journalism, fantastic, heart-rending stuff. Queen & Country by Greg Rucka and various artists is also worth a look.

Orc Stain, Nonplayer, The Umbrella Academy for the crazier side of comics!

Sorry  if this has been covered but will there be a 2D version of the film released as well?

I wonder if they're starting to regret spending all that money on doing JD in 3D; all signs seem to be pointing to fatigue for this gimmick.

I really enjoyed this series actually, the hardback is well worth picking up if you haven't read it!

I liked most of the stuff right up until Sinestro Corps War ends, the it gets a bit crap. Actually, if you have the money and inclination, I'd recommend the first two or three Green Lantern Corps trades too (with Dave Gibbons on script/some art duties)as I thought they were actually better.

The while GL line is pretty terrible now. Don't be tempted by Blackest Night; it's awful.

Mike Mignola!

Duncan Fegredo on Slaine would be cool. Brubaker/Philips on Robo Hunter!

I'd love to see what some of the up-and-comers like James Stokoe or Nate Simpson might do. More Guy Davis would be nice. Eduardo Risso, Paul Pope (on Rogue Trooper!?). Jonathan Hickman seems to be able to tell dense stories in a small number of pages. Warren Ellis and Neil Gaiman would be nice, even if just on a Future Shock/horror story or something along those lines.

And get Chris Weston, Laurence Campbell, Dave Gibbons, Frank Quitely and all the rest back. And fuck it, give Alan Moore a call and dare him to do a Future Shock too!

I actually preferred the B&W McCarthy art to the coloured version that someone posted a while ago. I think the colours drown out the linework to a large extent which is a pity.

It's been signposted clearly enough with two characters 'mistaking' it for a 'H'. Plus, you know, all the Nazi stuff!

Anyone know how many episodes are in this season?  It was 7 last time.

Samizdat Squad was great.  I didn't much enjoy the first series all that much (not that I thought it was bad, it just didn't stick with me for some reason. Maybe the monthly wait between episodes?) This has gotten off to a great start however. Brilliant art, clear and concise storytelling and appearances by TWO cool looking alien lifeforms/mutants.  I'd like to see a bit more of those transparent things, they were quite cool!  And the last page was fantastic stuff too.

Personally I'm finding the Meg more consistently enjoyable than the Prog over the last few months. A perfect balance of stories and articles. Numbercruncher is excellent. It's a bit off having Anderson in both the Meg and the Prog however; I do think the Prog story is a bit better, the Meg story is all about Boo Cook's amazing art for me!
