Film & TV / New Dr. Who Episode Review
01 April, 2006, 05:44:31 AM
Ok so I've seen the first episode of series 2 of dr. who, and it's really quite good. Superior to both the first series and the disappointing Christmas special, it's immensely enjoyable television. As fast-paced as we've come to expect, it's funny, clever, well-acted and very well-written. I sometimes find RTD's dialogue to be cheesy and immature but he has excelled himself with this. Manages to be accessible to young viewers and mentally stimulating for more mature ones at the same time.
Set on an alien planet for the first time, 'New Earth' has The Doctor and Rose in a hospital to visit The Face of Boe. They also encounter Cassandra, the human trampoline, and some mildly intimidating nurse cat-women.
To whet your appetites, here's a small spoiler.
SPOILER ALERT - Cassandra appeared to be killed by Rose in the last series, but she survives by using the skin from the back of her body, whereas before she was using the skin from the front(leading Rose to remark that she's actually speaking out of her arse).

Anyway - Can't wait for episode 2!

'snakes on a plane' looks potentially hilarious but yeah some of the effects looked like out-takes from 'anaconda' or something.

That's ridiculous. It seems that America can't make social progress without jumping back a step.

vinnie jones does not belong in films, he should be flogging match day programs at millwall f.c.

i've heard some key plot details for x3, and to be honest, they just sound stupid.
i really don't like where they're taking the whole Dark Phoenix thing.

Jonathan Ross is such an idiot.

I enjoyed Moore's excessively long first-panel description.

When I read it, I always assumed that V was the guy in room 5. It just seems the most logical answer.
Obviously at the end we have the notion that it's not important who wears the mask and it's the idea behind it that matters etc.,but this doesn't necessarily mean it wasn't just one guy doing it all along until he got shot.

Yeah I thought 'Waking Life' was awful, too. I study philosophy and still found what they were saying to amount to nothing more than intellectuallty indulgent crap.

I also agree that the book was somewhat incoherent but didn't that improve it? It kind of added to the drugged-up atmosphere that pervaded the novel.

This is easily the best trailer I've seen this year. It actually makes Keanu Reeves and Wynona Ryder look like half-decent actors.
Remarkable!

paul bettany is so awful. i really hope he doesn't get the part of The Joker. for some reason i'm thinking ed norton would be good for that role, but that's probably because ed norton is good for almost any role.

and jake gyllenhaal is definitely too young for harvey dent because i always thought he and bruce were meant to be the same age. he should stick to lassooing men into bed and leave harvey dent to a more mature actor, methinks.

Film & TV / Re: V for Vendetta review............

Alan Moore's work is very mature and cerebral. Hollywood adaptations of his comics are invariably dumbed down and diluted so that they can reach that lucrative PG13/12A target audience. They are commodifying works of art, and it's no wonder that the artist objects to this. Especially when his work is being failed so spectacularly.
'V for Vendetta' looks mildly diverting, and I'm fairly sure when it comes out it will receive a unanimous 'ok' rating. But, being Moore, I think 'ok' will be an injustice to him.

I really truly seriously hope they are re-comissioning Futurama. The reason we all love it is cause it was made for people like us who get all the subtle references and parodies.

The best quote ever is when Fry is eating the popplers and he says -
"Wow, these are like sex, only I'M having them!"
