25 January, 2004, 01:12:47 AM
Went to the FP closing down sale on Oxford Street on Oddboy's recommendation, and picked up cirtually the entire run of Crisis and some nice back progs (first couple of episodes of Destiny's Angel, first of Skizz), all for ?5.

Since I'm not a collector, some lucky boarder'll get these in some daffy competition at some point.

General / List of Thargs

Hiya -

Is there a chronological list of Thargs anywhere on this site?  If not, could someone supply one?

Cheers

My wife has her viva - PhD oral examination - today.  This determines the entire course of our lives (and whether I'll be stuck selling data for another few years).

So any religious boarders with space i their prayers - please add us in!

Prog / You may bow before me

(sort of) SPOILERS

Ladies and gentlesprogs of the jury,

I call your attention to "Samantha Slade - Robohunter", Prog 1373, page 1, panel 3; and also to page 5, panel 2 of the same story.

I would [sniff]like to accept this accolade on behalf of my Mum and Dad, my employers without whom none of my message-board posting would be possible, Alan Grant and Ian Gibson for including me and of course my beloved wife...

Seriously, what do you reckon?  Can I count that as my own piece of fame?

And if anyone can make an icon out of that clapperboard robot, I'd be very grateful!

Off Topic / Dumbass things your partner says...
16 January, 2004, 04:34:26 PM
On holiday in the Czech Republic last week, my wife turned to me and observed: "Have you noticed that in London you usually have to push the door, but in Prague you usually have to pull?"

I had to point out that it more depended on the side of the door she found herself, rather than which country she was in.

Anyone else got any "dumb partner" stories?

Suggestions / Thread moderating
13 January, 2004, 04:55:56 PM
This comes from a discussion on the "Few happy few" thread, where it was mentioned that there are too many off-topic posts.

I think tha problem is that on the threads where people are talking about "serious" 2KAD or general comics issues, there is a tendency for others to add in silly comments that steer the thread off-course too quickly.  (Guilty as charged, yer honour).

How about adding an option for some people to start "moderated" threads, whereby the original poster can vet others' posts before they appear on the board.  (Those with a profile?  People who've put up more than x number of posts?  Those who've been here a year or more?)

This wouldn't be a wholescale moderated board, which is the kiss of death.  People without the "power" to put up a moderated post would still be able to put up a thread.  It wouldn't kill the number of offtopic threads, but if you don't want to read them they're clearly defined.  What it should do is raise the level of serious comics-related discussion way above "IT SUCKS!/IT ROCKS!".

What do people think?  Is this even possible?

OK, so it's not something you'd normally review.  But a public thankyou is due to Logan and the Watcher for the (very) hard work that must have gone into that email and the ones to come.

Anyone not signed up - what are you waiting for?

Prog / Droid Life
10 January, 2004, 07:07:34 PM
Spoilers

Well done to Tharg and his team for "Droid Life".  The Nerve Centre has been a wasted space for far too long, and I hope this is a permanent feature - not necessarily this one strip, but other little funnies etc.

BTW, who is "Cat Sullivan"?  Surely that's a girl's name?

General / "The story of Spiderman"
05 January, 2004, 06:18:19 AM
Channel 5 had a story of Spiderman "documentary" (actually an hour-long plug for the film) on tonight, which included shots from Comics 2000 and an interview with some bloke called Andy Diggle.

Thing is, I'm pretty sure I recognised a couple of other people (was that you, Gem?)  Anyone care to step forward?

Hi!

I'm preparing a little something for the website (if it works & Wake'll have it etc) - what it is, let's leave as a surprise for now.

But for part of it I'm getting together a list of steps that people have followed in moving from trying to get published in the hallowed pages of 2000AD to actually getting published.

From the very basic (eg realising that Tharg won't even read your complete 9-book epic & maybe a Future Shock is the way to go) to the highly complex final stages (um...I dunno examples, that's why I need help...durrrr....).

Contributions especially welcome from:

a) Current 2000AD creators
b) People who've submitted their works to Tharg
c) Embittered souls who've given up on the whole idea and settled to a life of accountancy
d) The usual sarcastic commentators (i.e. everyone else)

All reminiscences gratefully received.

Well, I'm off for a while.  Just wanted to say thanks to everyone here for making me welcome - been posting for 6 months now and thoroughly enjoying the sane intelligent conversation on this board.

(Hang on, am I getting mixed up with another board?  Never mind)

HAVE A HAPPY XMAS AND MAY YOU GET MORE THAN YOU DESERVE.

Links / Comics conference in Canada
24 December, 2003, 05:34:24 PM
McGill University, Montreal
March 20-21, 2004
10th Annual Graduate Symposium on Language and Literature:
"Infinite Impressions: Literature and the Promiscuity of Text"

Panel Topic:

"Comics and the reproduction of history."

Possible topics surrounding the representation of history in comics could
be:

The cultural contexts of comics—the intersections between literature and
life
--Historical analyses of the production and consumption of comic books
--The symbiotic, mutually influential relationship between comic creators
their fans and critics
--Comic book collaborations and the questions surrounding multiple
creatorship
--"Living comics": comic book writing as process rather than product
--The interactions between comics and film—aesthetic and/or historical
approaches

The representation of autobiographical, historical and journalistic genres
in comics
--Constructions of the self and identity (gender, racial, class);
reproduction of memory in graphic storytelling
--Comics and the unconscious imagination
--Historio-graphic approaches in comic book fiction
--Aesthetic analyses of comics: analyses of the unique effects produced by
the interactions between text and image and how historical, social and
political content is affected by its encounter with the comic book medium

The vocabulary of film is often imported into discussions of comics because
they are both forms of visual storytelling. However, to conceive of comics
exclusively on the same terms as film ultimately renders the "9th art" a
silent, frozen adjunct of the cinema. Having stated this caveat, paper
proposals centered on film studies need not immediately be rejected on the
fact that they are not comics. There may be a convergence with the themes
and topics I have proposed.

Prog / Robo-Hunter - what's Samantha's job?

Prog 2004

Quotes from the start of the Robo-Hunter strip:

"I hate this stinkin' job.  Sure, this is only my first night, but already I'm startin' to regret the whole Samoley.
I got problems, see.  Problems with my landlord, problems with my bank, and problems with the simian employees of certain debt-collectin' agencies.
So suck it in, I'm tellin' myself.  Forget everything except the money."

First time of reading this, I sort of assumed it was Hoagy speaking, even though the voice didn't seem right.  But, from context, it's definitely Samantha Slade.

So: what job do you only do if pursued by all these debt-collecting agencies, that requires you to wear short black cocktail dresses and go to classy-ish nightclubs accompanied only by a greasy little man who calls you "hot-buns" and sticks his hands down your dress at any opportunity?

In other words: Is Samantha Slade a hooker?  And if so, is "suck it in" the dirtiest thing to appear in 2000AD since Durham Red?

Ok, I've read XTNCT this issue.  I've gone back and read all the previous issues.

Somebody please put me out of my misery - what the heck was that all about?

Good writing, good art - what was the story?  Why?
