Help! / Re: Why is it called
10 November, 2003, 03:41:22 PM
It should be what pvs says, but I suspect it varies with some artists.  Which is a pity, because Manta Craft is one of the better concepts from Dredd.http://www.flowergarden.nos.noaa.gov/images/manta.jpg">

Prog / Re: Dredd

Got my prog!!!!! (Came home and my beautiful bride only hid the bloody thing from me for an hour so's I'd help clean up instead of taking the excuse to collapse on the sofa.  I can see the headline now - Thrillsucker Wrecked My Marriage)

John Smith on Dredd just reminded me how much I want to see a grotesquely dark tale from this man.  I know he's got various detractors but his use of language is IMHO far superior to *any* other 2000AD writer.  Who else would be capable of "at the Ewing memorial hospital surgeon Lewis Wyndham...", "Who'll step naked with me into Heaven?" and "eyes and teeth coming right through the walls to feed", all in 4 pages?  Rennie's the only one who comes *close*.  Just sheer bloody genius.  (If only his dialogue skills were a tiny bit better and someone else dictated the plots...)

DMW - proof that a great sequence of jokes, in-jokes, obscure jokes and cult references won't quite cut the mustard without plot and character.

Synnamon - Another good episode, and back on form after a slight dip last week.  Loved the shot of Syn kissing the orb.  (Also had the thought that this is very strongly scientific sci-fi in that the internal logic seems very definitely constrained by the "imaginary physics" and biology, as opposed to being a form of magic as it is in most strips.  But that's just being too analytic, I guess).

Durham Red - Yeah, it's beginning to come together.  W&S.

Callaballa - I'm just more and more loath to say anything about where this might or might not be going.  The plotting and interweaving of various lines is masterful, and I just know that anything I say will get proved wrong in 6 weeks or so.

Letter of the Week - Bolt-01 scores a bullseye!  How's the CD?

Oh and finally (before I try rivalling a Keane post for length...) - did Tharg have to give away so many details about Synnamon in the synopsis, when we haven't yet learnt all of them in the strip itself?

Prog / Re: boo's gender
06 November, 2003, 11:18:32 PM
All we want is to see Dredd and the city drawn well, that's it.

(I shouldn't be even reading this thread os my prog's not through yet.  BOA)

Don't really agree with you on that, though.  Dredd & MC-1 are such clear designs that I *love* it when someone plays around with them.  It's not like the screwing around threatens the integrity of the original (Bisley's "face of Dredd" pic notwithstanding), so why should the editors not continue to commission some far-out takes on the strip?  If everyone drew like Andy Clarke I think I'd stop reading pretty quickly.

Still no prog.  Not even in an area that's officially been affected by the strike.  And I love Siku, and I really want to see this thing you're all moaning about.  Lower lip beginning to tremble...

General / Re: PRODUCT PLACEMENT
03 November, 2003, 07:09:35 PM
How much is any company going to be willing to pay to have its product appear in a couple of frames of a single strip in a *ugh* comic with a circulation well below 100K?

I'll give any of the artists reading this 10p to include the words "Ferrero Rocher" in any strip appearing in 2000AD over the next year.  Good deal, huh?

last Toxic issue was 31. I have a letter cancelling at issue 31 which is still in my issue 31.

Was it issue 31, by any chance?

Odds -

I like the mutant vampire omnitron you've got going there.  So what happens is that they're born needing blood (see DRed origins story), grow up until they get to a photogenic 23 years old or so, and then stay that age forever?  Doesn't exactly fit with the bits where Durham goes on about how she isn't a vampire, just a mutant who needs to drink blood, but hey, OK, let's go with it!

Questions that need answering:

1) How did Durham survive 100 years of madness without aging?

2) How come, even though he's been in stasis, Godolkin has aged 20-30 years?

3) If Godolkin is Durham Fred's father, how come Fred isn't 100 years old?

4) Is Harrison getting paid by some pervy fan for every shot of Red's buttocks/breasts/punani?

5) How come the Offspring, having become a virus that infects only genetically pure humans, has chosen to return to a sort of bodily form and kill off humans one by one?

Like I said, I thought this was an enjoyable start to a new series.  But the logic leaps mean our Durham's leaping the shark (not nice for us, but at least the shark'll be able to tell if that old "vagina dentata" rumour has any truth).

Just occurred to me - Durham's new enemies must surely be the evil Updraft and the cruel Chapped Lips.

General / Durham Red - is it wrong?....

Durham Red *might* turn out OK, you know.  Just forget all backstory, Stronts etc, and look at only the last 3 progs.  Read without the filters of expectation & foreknowledge, this tale so far has a very nice atmospheric start, is telling us the essential back details through the action, rather than a clonking narrative summary.

Hopefully the pornographic element in the art, which left a really bitter taste in my mouth (teaches me for licking the pages) has finished.

I have to say, though, that it's a bit poor to get the the end of a character's arc and just send her a few hundred years into the future *twice*.  But give this a chance, they really might pull it off.  (Insert 2nd porn joke here)
