General / Hellblazer comics
02 July, 2004, 11:56:49 PM
Hi all.

Are Garth Ennis' Hellblazer comics worth picking up? And are they worth anything? Just curious because our local newsagent has hundreds of comics from the 90's. Bachus,(sp?) original Sandman, a couple of Cerebus, and Hellblazer comics all going for five rand each. (About 40p) They are not all in sequence though. I didn't have any money on me today and am just wondering whether i should go down tomorrow and pick them up.

I'm from Dundee, but have lived in South Africa for 15 years.

People still can't understand me though.

A mate of mine needs the names of one or two successful movies where the modern character went to a fantasy world. And then a couple of vice versa type ones. He doesn't watch much television himself and he needs them for a couple of book proposals he is working on. As his agent told him, "editors don't read books anymore." The problem is I can only think of Neverending story. Anyone?

And "Masters of the Universe" doesn't count. :-)

Certaily not "deluded"! Bruce Campbell would make a great Dredd. At least, I've always thought so.

Although, maybe I'm simply deluded as well.

Can't comment myself, as I haven't seen the footage. But I came across this page while I was surfing through boredom and thought it had relevance.

No worries - didn't think you were off at all.

Still waiting on your list, though.

By all means, be pedantic. Which ones are 80's by the way. I just had it in my mind they were 90's because that was when I started listening to that kind of music.

My girlfriend and I are as bad as each other. although she is slightly more scary. I occasionally wake up and say quite cryptic things. The last one, I woke up, turned to her and said, "the road we must travel is long", then turned over and went back to sleep. Another time I sat up in bed, still asleep. She half-woke, saw me and then screamed and scratched by back. She _said_ she thought I was someone else leaning over the bed getting ready to attack me.

She is also a major arachnophobe and constantly has nightmares from which she awakes screaming.

But what scares me most is the story she told me of when she was a teenager and she woke up one morning in the cupboard with a knife in her hand.

I'm still unsure about mieville, myself. I read Perdido, and thought it was... OK. I like the grittiness he brings to his descriptions, and the feeling that the world has been there for a long time, but I just feel the books are a bit too long. Some of it seems like padding to me.

I'll probably get shouted down by this, because he does seem to be a very popular writer. Don't get me wrong, I like his style of writing. And I'm pissed off because I have a floating city of barge clans out in the ocean in my WIP and I recently found out that is sort of what he does in his new book and he will do it a hundred times better than I ever could, the bastard,(don't you hate it when that happens?)but I just don't know. I see his book in the shop and think, should I? shouldn't I? and I haven't yet.

I'm still not sure. Is it worth it? I buy about two books a month, so I have to pick carefully.

Believe me, every person in S.A. cheered the man when he did that. The chick has been asking for it since she came in. She speaks in cliches (her favourite being, "I _feel_ you, man. I know where you're coming from." She's the kind of person who thinks she knows everything about you, even better than you do yourself.

Go Cameron.
