Messages - House of Usher

She left a white plastic chopping board and a saucepan on top of the grill and she knew we were having sausages for tea. I didn't see the chopping board because it's white and so is the cooker hood. The chopping board melted and I had to peel it off. It's destroyed, and the cooker had melted plastic on it. I went into a man sulk, thinking that everything was ruined, except the dinner, which was great, thanks, especially the mashed potato. After dinner she scraped all the melted plastic off the cooker and throughoughly scrubbed it so it looks like second-hand-new. She really is marvellous.

To cut a long story short, my girlfriend has recently unwittingly become the victim of a dedicated workplace campaign against her by her colleague

Same thing happened to me in the civil service last year: ended up with four in my chain of command trying to get rid of me, aided and abetted by four people who barely knew me, one from HR, saying whatever the managers wanted about meetings I had had with them to get them off their backs, protect themselves and earn some brownie points. They were able to sack me without comeback because I had been there for under a year and the project I'd been asigned to was a doomed piece of shit before I started. Now the Prime Minister, urged on by Boris Johnson, is considering removing the right to claim unfair dismissal for the first two years of employment to further undermine workers' rights and job security. This is supposed to help job creation in some way.

was a lot of resentment about the repeatedly blown deadlines, and a lot of irate customers who bought what they thought was the new issue, only to find instead it was a stop-gap reprint of issues 1 and 2 to fill time between missed solicitations.

Round here we call them a) 'babies' and b) idiots.  ;)

Lady Usher is currently reading Frank Herbert's Dune. She's almost a third of the way through. I think she both brave and patient.

Me: "Is it good?"
Her: "Not really."

Yup. 'Taking too long' only means something when you know how long it's supposed to take.

Oh, that's profound, and so, so true.

The thing is, Kevin O'Neill isn't just drawing comics: LOEG is a labour of love. He's trying to create something that will endure. The work involved isn't just drawing, either. There is an awful lot of research involved and reference material to be collected and digested, and a lot of stuff in the background, all of which has to be designed, and much of which will not make more than a single appearance in the book.

A good Prog, headed up by a top-notch Dredd. Wouldn't be a bad introductory Dredd for anyone who hasn't any prior acquaintance with the character.

Shakara was superb. Those backgrounds were startlingly vivid; reading it was almost like being there, or at least watching a film with state of the art special effects.

Kingdom was great, too. Interesting new humanoids and an interesting new though familiar predicament.

I didn't and don't enjoy Necrophim or Ampney Crucis Investigates.

I hope his favourite liquid isn't Chanel no.9 or Bollinger. Either one could be expensive.

Just remember three things Cyberleader:

1. Don't be fat.
2. Don't be ugly.
3. Don't be poor.

Although if she's fat, ugly and poor it improves the odds in your favour.

Bowling is an excellent idea for a second date. Get her to McDonald's, then ask her if she'd like to go bowling with you at the weekend or the following week. If a girl won't go bowling with you it definitely means she's not interested.

As near to a heavy rock score it can get, Necrophim...

That's odd. When I put it on the thrill-player all I got was George Formby singing 'With My Little Stick of Blackpool Rock.'

I have just finished devising a poetry analysis tutorial using 30 questions about Toads by Philip Larkin as stimulus material, and I'm happy with it.

I've got 5 students starting up their classes again this week. Something to be glad about.

And I think I heard of a Halo Jones once.

or it might have been 'Halon.' It's an element.
