Stalemate then! I like that ending. So he beat the devil, didn't he? 10 years of power and opportunity in exchange for being stuck in a time loop with no recollection of how things turned out last time doesn't seem too bad a deal.

I got outbid in an online auction yesterday for an item I'd not seen before. AIIIIEEEE!

On Saturday night there was a neighbour's cat sitting on the kitchen window staring in, and I had to chase it out of the garden shouting 'AIIIIEEEE!'

My girlfriend put a skim-coat of plaster over the inside of the china cabinet in our dining room over the weekend. She made a really lovely job of it too. AIIIIEEEE!

I'm so easily excited. Oh, my poor heartses.

Will, I realise that you make a distinction between Hitler and the right-wing dictators that were America's allies in smaller, less powerful countries during the Cold War, but to me mass murder is still mass murder even if it is in a supposedly 'good cause'.

I don't understand why you cling so desperately to your political ideology. And I'm not even sure what that is. You are right wing. Does that mean you are a free market Conservative? And what about socially? Do you think that the role government should not be to care about the education, health and welfare of its citizens, and that everyone should make their own provision for their future needs through savings, private insurance and networks of contacts they can ask for favours?

I cannot see how government based on the principles of conservatism could make life better for me and the society I live in, and all my politically active life my political activity has been directed toward opposing it. What has conservatism done for you (in the past twelve years) that you owe it you unwavering loyalty?

Obviously wouldn't condone such actions today, there's no excuse for it but during the Cold War I see it as necessary.

Obviously, one wouldn't condone rounding up jews, gypsies and communists and putting them into extermination camps nowadays, but in terms of the aims of Hitler's Germany, it was necessary?

(Do you see what I did there?)  ;)

No, thought not.

I didn't pick up the Extreme Edition, so it's a long time since I read Invasion. Sounds a bit reactionary. Maybe the writer of that one was channelling the spirit of Enid Bylton when he wrote it?

Gordon, do you mean "If radical, soviet backed/supported marxists had won in the UK during the Cold War" ?  See, Will@411mania must know something I don't, because I didn't realise there was an internal struggle in the UK between right-thinking people and a rebel fifth-column of Soviet-backed Marxists. Unless it was an analogy to what was going on in Afghanistan, Angola, and elsewhere in the world.

But given the choice between socialist self-determination and having a fascist junta installed on my behalf to keep the commies out and make the world safe for America and democracy, I'd choose the former any day.

On the bright side, at least the US 'anti-communist' adventure in Central America wasn't directly successful.

It never actually achieved the military overthrow of left-wing governments in Nicaragua, El Salvador or Guatemala. The Sandinistas in Nicaragua were voted out in 1990 after years of fighting the US-backed Contras proved to be a hefty burden and a taxing diversion from the everyday business of trying to run the country.

I don't think this thread has yet got to the crux of what exactly was good or bad about Reagan's time in office.

You can't give him credit for ending the Cold War on purpose. How Reagan 'won' the Cold War was by fighting it with ruthless dedication and by spending far more on the nuclear arsenal and conventional arms than the Soviets could afford to keep up with, so in the end they had to concede defeat.

What else did he do that was so bad? Like Robin Hood in reverse, he took from the poor and gave to the rich. He also pursued a foreign policy that sanctioned the toppling of democratically chosen socialist governments and replacing them with fascist dictators and military juntas, condoned torture (instruction provided by the CIA), and sold arms to both sides in the Iran-Iraq war to keep them busy fighting each other.

Wouldn't there be a lot more demand for 2000ad miniatures if they were 25mm scale, thus compatible with miniatures produced for roleplaying and wargames by Games Workhop and other games companies?

Ribald fun !!!

(ribald for your pleasure).
But Sex and The City is spoofy anyway, and it'd be too filthy. I bet John Wagner or Gordon could pull it off though.  Gold !!!
